as someone who grew up lightly affiliated with a cult-ish religion, i can confidently say that even after cutting ties with everything and everyone from there... some of the habits remain. i dont eat certain foods, i pray and ask forgiveness when need be, and i feel like a living, walking sin.
i am attracted to religious themes and imagery in media, even after acknowledging all the dumb stupid shit that people do with the bible
do i think simon is devoted, even after eden threw him to the sharks? no. he had 16 years of solitude to come to terms with that, and he is still rightfully angry.
do i think that simon falls back into old habits and thought processes, especially in times of extreme distress? yes. i lowk wish they explored more of that in the movie, but the imagery of simon cradling the seedling like a rosary hit me so fucking hard that i weep every time
there are so many gorgeous works on here that explore possible scriptures and prayers for the in-universe dialogues but i am greedy and think we need MORE 🗣️‼️‼️‼️

counteroffer: when simon first sees grace, his immediate thought is that he died and this was the angel of death finally taking his soul. he calls grace "angel" and promptly passes tf out (due to the hundreds of complications the iron lung gave him)
BUT it's grace who ends up calling him that. teasingly. after they've settled their roots into something like kinship. grace brings it up one morning, over breakfast, "hey, remember when you thought i was an angel?" and simon tells him to shut up, red in the face. so grace keeps mentioning it, until eventually the words fall away, and all that's left is him, simply calling simon, "angel."
another thing that greatly endears me from the bloodymary crossover is the officialized additional tags in the ao3 filtering system

hail mary full of grace, the lord is with thee. simon, popularly attributed to its link to "listener/the one who listens" but may i also propose: simon peter, one of christ's apostles, most notably the one who always stumbled and struggled with his faith? who promised to never forsake the lord but later promised, thrice, that he never met him? he was a fisherman, for crying out loud, he and his brother both were.
the butcher, the teacher, the convict, the scientist—the lambs sent to the slaughterhouse so everyone else could live.
is it cowardice to want to live? why can't they see that you choosing that is just as important...
something about the dying and the death of the light. it wouldn't be a hail mary without human desperation. and you understand, from a utilitarian standpoint, why the trolley is headed for your track. you still cry over how unfair everything is.

Grace will never stop talking
Ivan, Luka, and the familiarity with hunger, with never feeling fulfilled, with desperation cloaked by perfection. But the catch is that they run in opposite directions, circling all the way around until they meet in the middle for one explosive, unobtainable, "what-if."
I adore these stills from KARMA because it's the most explicit symbolism we will ever get for them from the ALNST universe. The direct contrast of Ivan and Luka being the only characters to wear black is such an unexplored avenue. It speaks of love that's too dark and destructive for either of the receiving parties. And does that, in turn, make them evil? Because if so, then they seem sad for human beings who are so passionately, intoxicatingly in love.
Something I noticed only at a later rewatch as well; Till is alive in this scene, actively struggling against the weight of Ivan's love. In contrast, Hyuna and Hyunwoo both sprawl dead against Luka, with remnants of shattered hearts and splatters of blood-ink. The implication being that Luka did not force his love onto them, the way Ivan did, but rather, attempted to take it from them, claws and all.
And with these sequenced back-to-back, it really makes you think about the possibilities. Ivan, ever the giver, so starved of touch that he will prod at a live fire just to feel the warmth of it burn him (as he's done numerous times to Till)... what would happen if his love was directed elsewhere?
Say, towards the boy who looks like the sun, who only knows how to love with blood and possession—because that means certainty, and Luka is only ever allowed to be his imperfect self when he is promised safety.
I've seen many a fanfic canonize Luka's apathy as his true self, the same way they do with Ivan's charismatic persona. Interestingly enough, those particular masks add even more potential to their nebulously impossible interactions. They'll see each other for what they truly are; in another life, they might have even fulfilled those lovelorn roles with one another.
Because here's the thing, I get it. I think it's beautiful, the hope that Till and Hyuna respectively provided.
But the concept of Ivan's immovable yearning colliding with Luka's unstoppable desire? PEAK what-if, to me.
And that's not even touching on the sheer visuals and tropes they provide. Black and white, sunbae/hyung shenanigans, height difference, THIS OFFICIAL ART OF THEM:
I know it's stupid to rant about ALNST-specific tropes of them then end on an AU but let me have this. Please. Why are they so well-matched in everything? It's like dangling all the ingredients of your favorite meal in front of you and proceeding to never actually cook with them. They actually drive me crazy and, outside of a handful of Patreon comics, THEY HAVEN'T EVEN MET YET.
Anxious Love
A thought experiment on Luka's form of love, Hyuna, and Hyun Woo.

Anxious love / insecure love -> Love is insecure, unstable, and like all emotions, malleable. It's subject to change. It is not everlasting. It can grow, it can dwindle. It is impermanent. Whether it be his own feelings, or other people's feelings for him.
Luka, who is self-destructive yet at the same time hurts others, with his pure childish yet seemingly inherently evil nature, could not be accepted with beauty alone.

Unhealthy love -> His methods of loving are not conventional or healthy; he does not hold the same concept and understanding of love as we do, that some like Hyuna and Mizi are lucky to.
Luka is the product of his exceedingly twisted environment — more than the others due to the nature of how controlling it is. He isn't allowed to exist outside of what that environment demands him to be. Nevermind a toe out of line, "every angle of your mouth is controlled."
All this ties into the flashback sequence from All-In in an interesting way.
He tried to come onto Hyuna due to his feelings; the wrong approach stemming from his skewed and lacking understanding of love.
The rejection from Hyuna reminds him once again that love is not guarenteed and that love is not stable.
Due to this blow, he turns towards a different method to securing their relationship— blood.
"Luka thought the whole time he was away from Hyuna. About what he should have done, and how on earth he could be more connected to his loved ones than blood."

By killing Hyun Woo, Luka has essentially tied himself to Hyuna through a "bond of blood."
Even if Hyuna will never develop feelings for him. Even if one day his own feelings change, they will always be tied through Hyun Woo.
Luka's expression, which is a big part of Hyuna's trauma, is smiling as if he feels joy even though he is covered in blood.

Control -> he cannot tether himself to his loved ones through something as insecure as feelings. Thus he uses blood instead.
And he's succeeded.
No matter what state it's in or what form it now takes, his bond with Hyuna has been been eternalized. Even after so many years, it remains tethered and strong.
Hyuna's inability to leave her trauma behind, her inability to leave him behind, has given him a joy no one else can understand.
Bonus Hyuna
Even if her heart wavers due to betrayal or unrequited affection, she still chooses the path of love.

"Unrequited affection" -> either referring to her inability to return Luka's feelings thus leading to the incident, or referring to Luka, repaying her and Hyun Woo's care with murder, thereby not reciprocating their affection for him in the same form he received.
"Betrayal" "I never should have been nice from the very beginning" -> Because she was affectionate to Luka, he developed feelings for her. Because she could not return those feelings, he attempted to form a different bond, one tied in blood. And in the end, she lost the one most dear to her in this world, her "one and only jewel." She sees accepting Luka as the greatest mistake of her life.
Bonus Hyun Woo
This one I'm not so confident about but it's a possibility that gives food for thought.
Some cues:
"Be more connected to his loved ones than blood" -> he has attempted to connect to a loved one through blood previously
"Loved ones" -> Hyuna isn't the only one he loved (ofc this could be a generalized term)
During his Anakt days, his beauty stimulated the curiosity of the other kids, but after they came to know his true self, they could never become friends with him.

There's no mention of him in Luka's materials despite Hyun Woo playing a huge part in his life — the first person to accept him, the catalyst for his bond with Hyuna, the catalyst for the break down of his relationship with Hyuna.
Either Hyun Woo doesn't even make a bleep on his radar, or it's because he matters (... or mattered) that Luka refuses to touch on the topic of him.
The bond he attempted to forge through Hyun Woo's death might not be just about Hyuna, but Hyun Woo too.
Hyuna's rejection emphasized Luka's insecurity and inability to believe in the longevity of their relationships.
Thus Luka killed Hyun Woo, while the latter still cares about him.
He already failed with Hyuna. But this one, with Hyun Woo it's not too late yet. Before Luka inevitably destroys his relationship with him, he should kill him, so that eventuality can never come to pass.
