saying my piece here about nirvannatbts and the whole of mj’s filmography especially when it comes to themes/fandom culture (bored ramble)

with as much due respect as I can give tumblr users. lot of you are finding readings where they hardly exist because you fundamentally dont connect with the filmmaker experience or even with the experience of being a creator at all. finding comfort in headcanoning characters is fine but I dont think ANYONE should kid themselves with the idea or takeaway from any of his works is “this guy is gay/a victim/etc”. im not attempting to speculate on the nature of the director but the through line with ALL of his works have been an undying passion to keep trying and making.

things can obviously coexist im not “so you hate waffles”ing here. i just think that attempting to entertain the idea that the original reading because it suits a more fandom-y approach in your head. you do not need to connect 1 to 1 with a character to understand them you know? there should always be a degree of separation between an artist, the viewer and the work and now seeing your entire self is fine.

if there’s anything to take from his characters that should resonate it should be that spark in your head that makes you keep creating. you don’t necessarily have to relate to the usage of everyone around you as an asset or obstacle or the medium he strives for or whatever.

people who are aspiring to move to toronto to meet/become like him are missing the point of it all: the reason it’s special is because it’s specific, a gate kept in-joke for 17 years that is geographically and culturally distinct. every town and city has one and i dont think youre honouring anything mj stands for by trying to move around for a fleeting fantasy
