About Me

My name is Alix Brown, and I'm an illustrator from the Jurassic Coast who specialises in dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures (but mostly dinosaurs right now). Check out my work HERE Or check out the current Threadless design challenge submission HERE

Fish-lovers united... And a Canada goose who's having a good preen. This sticking out island thing is brilliant for these kinds of birds because they've got easy access to the water and also some shelter. Speaking of which, the egret headed rapidly inland after I took this shot... The weather's definitely going to do SOMETHING soon!

Goose-duck family photos: They were hanging out with the geese again, and the influence on their parenting from their own upbringing is extremely clear. Five of their original six ducklings made it through and the (presumed) father seems to have stuck around to help, which isn't what you'd expect from duck parenting... But it is what you'd expect from geese. I swear I saw some of last year's goose-ducks flying in a skein earlier in the week. Learned behaviours seem to be really common in the park.

Still at 6 cygnets from Punky and Lucky, all of whom are thriving. The reason why several of them have their legs up on the exact same side is that it's a learned behaviour from several generations back: The first swan I really followed was Katie, or a cygnet who got caught in the park lake groyne and had to be rescued. Her leg was never quite right afterwards, and she got food because of it. So her babies ultimately learned to swim that way, and passed it on down the generations to the latest clutch over 20 years later.

Adaptive behaviour is a wonderful thing!

The geese knew what they were doing... And so did the engine driver, who stopped to let them cross safely. I swear they waited until the engine was on its way before they crossed.

Don't do this with your local railway line...

This critter isn't even a llama either: It's a Macrauchenia, or a relative of camelids from the Ice Age. However, the classic trappings seem to fit it nicely, so why not?

A few weeks ago, friends and colleagues of mine (I was not involved) published this incredible new species of legless skink that makes distinctive zig-zag markings in the sand as it 'swims' through it.

The first clutch of Greylag goslings aren't goslings any more... The difference between them and the fluffy baby on the right is extraordinary!

A "No Fishing" sign was recently put in, and given that there are plenty of birds that like to fish, I was hoping to get a shot of one perching on there like those kingfishers.

However, things didn't pan out: There was a seagull on the "No Fishing" sign as well, but he took off before I could get a photo... Such are the ways of birds!

I just googled this and… yes, it’s absolutely real.

And there are so many articles and videos and discussions. Like, the scientific community is buzzing about this.

So much research will have to be redone because the data was absolutely compromised, off by orders of magnitude, by using standard lab gloves.

The world is probably not horrifically contaminated by microplastics. Sterile laboratories, however, are contaminated by latex and nitrile gloves.

Thank God someone bothered to check.
