Royals au, arranged marriage with everyone fearing Hua Yongs empire so when it was announced they are looking for a marriage partner for their king Sheng Fang sent one of his daughters with Shaoyou as her guardian not knowing that Shaoyou will be taken in as a candidate as well, Shaoyou meets Hua Yong thinking he’s a candidate because of how pretty he is and asks him about where he’s from and then finding out he’s part of the royal family, thinking he should befriend him for future relations he opens a conversation about the workforce and how there isn’t space for other dynamics or whatever floats your boat.

he ends up getting shocked by Hua Yongs answer because it’s the first time someone had the same idea as he did getting him excited and asking him if they can meet up to discuss and chat while everyone is going through their tests and trials

Hua Yong agrees and so while everyone is suffering these two are cultivating their feelings and building new policies and meeting up with other royals which at one point Hua Yong asks him about his marriage prospect and Shaoyou answers stuns him because he thought he would’ve been the heir and would already have something in place (thinking about how to burn the contract and change it) but it turns out that he lost his place the moment his mom died he renounced taking the throne because they promised to poison his mother family and ruin her reputation, while his father turned a blind eye for he’d get more out of this bargain and he has more kids and can get a new “legitimate heir” Shaoyou is disposable even though it isn’t something spoken it is known to the royalty no matter how hard he works the kingdom isn’t his for taking. In exchange of his renouncement he’s free to marry whoever and that’s when Hua Yongs tells him to follow

they end up going inside the private quarters of the royal family with Shaoyou starting to wonder what’s going on. Hua Yong takes him to a private study where the only portrait of the ruler is shown telling him you promised we’d always be friends no matter what (by this point both had feelings for each other) he takes of the coverings showing the painting

Shaoyou in shock stupidly asks if he has a twin and then just sighing asking if he had fun playing with him

Hua Yong grabs his arms and tells him no and that this is the most fun he’d had in ages and that they should get married. That Shaoyou already has his courts agreement, he just needs him to agree cuz the promised wedding is in two weeks.

Hua Yong was planning to just have someone else take his place while he runs away, he can take care of himself and trusts the court wouldn’t fall apart without him but then he met Shaoyou. Now that everything is out Hua Yong just follows Shaoyou and clings to him for the whole week till Shaoyou agrees making them run themself to the ground planning their marriage and sending invites to the other kingdoms to come and celebrate the union and so everyone is surprised (besides the candidates) when they see the two of them.
