my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort

the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.

A cannon event for me is hearing a rich Upper East Side lady talk about how she had "a right to feel safe" when she was arguing for the removal of homeless people from her neighborhood.

the number of people who think that they have some kind of right to not have to see unhoused people while doing absolutely nothing to help get those people housed (and frequently voting against any kind of measure to do exactly that) is astonishing, yeah.

I worry a little bit that people who refuse to learn about ai as a part of their anti ai position are going to be extremely unprepared to understand what’s actually scary about it and already have their digital literacy at risk tbh

not that I am some genius in this regard but if you follow ai developments even slightly you might change the things you are most worried about. do people know the extent to which ai is already eating itself and how meaningless this is making swaths of the internet. do people know that there are plenty of random mid-sized companies today buying their employees’ likenesses to create digital clones and using these to make hundreds of videos. I am so much more worried about labor and surveillance and abuse than people becoming lazy about writing emails. and idk man I sort of like and respect people who are willfully ignorant about it as a way of minimizing its force in their lives and I am in some ways jealous but also when I see posts that basically still boil down to “chatgpt will never fool me” I am like 😭😭😭 for one thing not the only thing to be concerned about, for another thing I am really sorry but I don’t think you’re right

something I feel like needs to be talked about more is how people will mischaracterize characters so drastically just for the sake of moral purity.

Like yeah, fandom, do what you want forever, I agree with playing with your dolls for fun and babying your favs-- however, what really truly annoys me is people taking evil characters that are rotten as hell, and making them soft uwu beans, not for the sake of pleasure or fun, but because they need to make an excuse as to why liking that character is totttally okay.

Especially when they turn around and maul someone for liking an evil character being evil because they think that the other person isn't opposing the actual portrayal hard enough.

It's like they think they need to make shit unproblematic before they are allowed to enjoy something, so anything they do like becomes warped to fit the "cute, pure and innocent" mold, and that is such a damn sad way to engage with media.

imagine being so puritan that you can't enjoy anything with actual grit and join dark fandoms only to scrub everything that makes those works interesting so they fit your world view, while also trying to force everyone in the fandom to conform.

it's giving "gentrified neighborhood with cookie cutter houses" where these people are basically the HOA of fandom.

analyzing the major through a liberal lens is crazy because he’s basically the final boss of negative liberty. if the individual is truly sovereign then that includes the right to self-destruct and burn the world down just as a pure act of will. like his refusal to actually "win" in favor of the process of war itself just proves he prioritizes individual choice over any kind of collective logic or state order

you can basically see him as this radical defender of subjectivity who views objective reality and its laws as the ultimate form of tyranny. if classic liberalism is about the right to life then the major takes it to the absolute limit by claiming the right to death and destruction as the highest expression of a will that isn’t bound by god the state or nature itself

even him replacing his heart with a machine is just the ego winning over human frailty and turning himself into a fully autonomous construct that exists only for its own idea. his obsession with alucard is really just an existential beef with the whole concept of predestination and higher powers. to him even a literal monster is just another form of oppression to be overcome by human resolve. basically his character is a reminder that the ideal of self-determination when stripped of anything constructive just turns into absolute egocentrism
