This may be rather specific, but is there any breed that is bred for... Health? I know good breeders will do their best to screen for diseases and try to retire any cat that is prone to them, but is there any breed where the entire point is trying to make the healthiest, most functional animal out there?
Yeah, natural selection has given us the domestic shorthair.
Snarkiness aside, most cat breeds are really solid. Most cat breeds aren't bred to the same extreme body modification that dogs are. Outcrossing between breeds is pretty normal and encouraged in most breeds. Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe) has actually banned several breeds, including Munchkins and Scottish folds. This is major because FIFe is part of the World Cat Congress, which is a sort of federation of the largest cat fancies with a focus on improving cat health in general. By banning these breeds, FIFe is effectively making a stand and hopefully other clubs will follow their example. They will, if their members make enough of a fuss.
There are absolutely outliers in cat breeds. Scottish folds, munchkins, extremely brachy persians and other short-faced breeds are all inherently unhealthy animals that should not be bred.
But, in general, cat breeds aren't as prone to fancy bastard diseases as dog breeds are.
I think one thing that's not obvious to people is that unlike with dogs you really can't assume that any old cat you get from a shelter is going to be more genetically diverse than a purebred cat. A neglected and isolated population of feral cats or barn cats will be more inbred than carefully bred purebred cats from a good and responsible breeder. Where I'm from this describes like, at least 50% of cats that end up in shelters. The US doesn't really have feral dog populations interbreeding without any human supervision in the same way. Even mutts tend to come from irresponsible dog owners who's unfixed dogs escape, or people who want to make "designer dogs." These animals typically do have more genetic diversity because the AKC is really really strict about what counts as a purebred dog.
I have three domestic short hairs right now, I'm extremely unlikely to ever get a "fancy" cat, but there's no doubt in my mind that AT LEAST two of my cats are far more inbred than any cat I'd get from an ethical breeder and probably the third is too.
It's fine, I keep them indoors and take them to the vet regularly, I don't have a huge amount of worries over their general health or longevity but I would argue that I'd have a lot more assurances if I'd gotten papered cat from an ethical breeder who tested all their animals for health concerns and knew all about their parents and grandparents and great grandparents etc.
It's weird because I would argue that there's a lot more reason to get a specific breed of dog from a breeder but my observation is that cat breeders are a lot less weird about the whole thing.
Oh yeah. One of the things I noticed while studying social dynamics in cat colonies is how few new cats enter a colony in general. Usually if a new cat entered a colony, they were dumped by former owners and could experience a lot of difficulty integrating into the colony. Colonies tend to be quite isolated, genetically speaking.
There was some wiggle room in more socialized colonies. Cats that were more comfortable with people tended to travel more between colonies.
why am i getting notes on this blog? im not seeing any new activity when i check????

possible sparkneedle family
needletail takes over the roles of larksong + juniperclaw. yeah they don't exist anymore, rip. also she lives longer and only dies at the end of avos, bc she died too soon, and her death in shattered sky made more sense at the end than in the middle of avos
the sparkneedle romance was brief and sour-sweet and ended w/ needle sacrificing herself to save violetshine from darktail.
there's a prophecy surrounding sparkstrike and skyclan but for most of the series she's very reluctant to fulfill the role; it's needletail who becomes more supportive of keeping skyclan in the lake territories, likely to atone for her previously supporting darktail's kin and manipulating violetpaw. she slowly convinces spark to agree w/ her, but it's after her death when spark decides to lead skyclan back to the lake to honor needle's last wish
i like to think that needle's mom named her after seeing an exotic vagrant bird of the same name. maybe it's an omen for something important
flickerkit still dies, jury's still out on nightheart but he's... less important to my au either way. their parents had planned to give flickerkit the suffix -bright had he lived
finchlight changes her name to finchspark (support her moms? to claim a fire-related name for legacy reasons? it's a little unclear)
sometime after finch gets her suffix, perhaps sparkstrike gets a rebound w/ stormcloud?
bonus genetics nerdery
needletail is a shorthaired black smoke solid w/ low white spotting (LL Xo BB Ii Wbwb aa bmbm Mcmc Spsp Wsws), carrying non-silver, non-wide band, classic tabby, and spotted. she has prominent ghost tabby marks that reveal a mackerel tabby pattern and have a strong bluish tint
sparkpelt is a shorthaired midnight charcoal red marbled tabby w/ low white spotting (Ll XOXO Bb ii wbwb Apba Bmbm mcmc Spsp Wsws), carrying longhair, solid, chocolate, non-Bengal mod, and spotted. normally charcoal isn't expressed in red cats, but a brightening mutation in her lineage makes the pattern more visible, though i'm not adding it bc i made it up
finchspark is a shorthaired midnight charcoal black tortie silver marbled tabby w/ low white spotting (LL XOXo BB Ii Wbwb Apba Bmbm mcmc Spsp Wsws), carrying non-silver, non-wide band, non-Bengal mod, and spotted. the silver gene makes her ginger patches more high contrast, and the black parts also have a bluish tint
nightheart is a shorthaired midnight charcoal red golden marbled tabby w/ low white spotting (Ll XO Bb ii Wbwb Apba Bmbm mcmc spsp Wsws), carrying longhair, non-wide band, solid, non-Bengal mod, and chocolate. he actually has a somatic mutation that deactivates phaeomelanin (red pigment) over most of his pelt
flickerkit is a shorthaired midnight charcoal red golden spotted tabby w/ low white spotting (Ll XO Bb ii Wbwb Apba bmbm Mcmc SpSp Wsws), carrying longhair, chocolate, non-wide band, classic tabby, and solid. he's the runt of the litter and probably would've stayed small if he lived
ahaha split face tortie curlfeather, im sure it doesn't mean anything in particular
idea: lightleap and blazefire as a trashfire on-and-off couple who divorce multiple times a year. lightleap divorces blazefire once just to confess her feelings to sunbeam (it goes poorly) (sunbeam is too busy mooning after blazefire) (she switches to mooning after nightheart)
so jayclaw has gray eyes, and his father mallownose's own father is unknown, and the only other gray eyed tom in the series is reedwhisker...
ideas for maplepool
i want her to be a tortie, and for reasons, also a blue silver tabby, but torbies are hard for me to color and silver ones even more so
she also has a mane and a chunky build, and a maple leaf shaped mark in all designs
to me there's a kind of bonus meta horror in the bristlefrost's death 'only love' scene where like. ok discussion of misogyny in the series has shifted a bit since then but you know how a few years ago people's main gripe used to be that after completing their arcs female characters would lose their personality and fade into the background to fulfill the generic role of 'mother'? and you also know how bristlefrost's personality and focus began to shift and diminish halfway through the arc where out of nowhere she suddenly reciprocated rootspring's feelings and was rushed into a poorly written romance arc? yeah well there's something really chilling (though not in a way that is in any way tonally intentional. in fact kind of the direct opposite of what the erins were going for and i think i would feel differently about it if her relationship with rootspring was not so uncompelling and short lived until this point) about how in her final moments before her existence ceases and she is denied her afterlife the visions she sees are of romance and love and rootspring and babies. just a total loss of individuality into generic warrior cats love interest and mother. to not be feeling for yourself at the end of it all but what you bring to another character. to just kind of embody the status quo of your series and fade away.
i really like the idea that firestar and his descendants have a mutation that makes red fur way more saturated. it's really obvious when you compare a ginger firekin to a random ginger clan cat
if you're wondering why some of the names are different this is for my au that i haven't named yet
"The fire has burned out, but to dispel the darkness you must find the spark that remains"
extremely disappointing from a doylist view that sparkpelt is not an avos protagonist. wdym you have a firestar clone named "sparkpaw", a prophecy for the clan firestar revived centered around a "spark" and you don't use her for anything important?
fuck it, she's the avos protag in my heart
Another reason why I *hate* the direction they went with Sparkpelt (as in not giving her any plot relevance - like being named Sparkfire and struggling with the legacy of being named and looking like Firestar) is that SkyClan received a prophecy telling them to "find the spark that remains", referring to Firestar's descendants. It's right there 😭
rwby but they're in the warrior cats verse
ruby, yang, and nora are from thunderclan, weiss is from shadowclan, blake is from skyclan, jaune is a kittypet who joins windclan, pyrrha is from windclan, and ren is from riverclan
i might expand later
everytime i draw her i change her design help me plz
