here is the ipad sleeve i sewed yesterday! i was waiting on my keyboard to arrive so i couldn’t draft the pattern off its irl size and just went off the measurements i found online. but it all worked out ok.

there’s even enough extra room in the front pouch for my bullet journal and headphones which is a big bonus!

we’re gonna do some great things together (once i find a button that fits/i don’t hate)

I have completed my first year of grad school!

This year has brought so many unexpected changes, few that have been related to academia at all. I'm still exploring language cognition, specifically the cognitive basis of perceiving and learning communicative speech sounds. However, after some unforseen issues during my first semester that hit close to home for me, my work is evolving in a new direction that assumes an embodied, dynamic systems approach to perception-production systems.

I'm still finding my footing in my research and at my university. Currently, I'm in the midst of preparing my first experiment for data collection while simultaneously revising my IRB for approval and familiarizing myself with several niche areas of research across psychological subfields.

Ten years of studyblr.

Wow. That doesn’t seem quite real somehow. How could I have possibly had this account for ten years? How could I have been part of this community for ten years? But on this day in 2016 when I was waiting for my GCSE results I decided that I was going to make a studyblr and I’m so glad I did. This community has been there for me through so much. The ups and downs of the last ten years. Through my A Levels. My undergraduate. My first job - the good and unfortunately the bad that came with it. Starting my masters degree and my Etsy shop!

Normally I tag people on my blog birthday post but so many people have changed urls or moved or deactivated or left. But I just want you all to know, I am so grateful to you. To everyone who has ever responded to a post or been part of a weekend sleepover or if we’ve interacted. I’m glad to know you all. To have met you all. To have been alongside you on all our journeys. Even if you’re not a studyblr and just an account I’ve befriended along the way. I really appreciate each and every one of you. Seeing you in my notes always makes me smile. And I’m so proud of all of you for everything you’re doing and how far you’ve come. I do tend to feel like the big sister of studyblr 🩷

Thank you for all the support you have given me over the last ten years. It has been lovely to know you all and I look forward to continuing sharing this space with you all ahead of my second year of my masters degree.

Applying and waiting for admission decision for my master’s program is bananas , so I’ve been spending a lot of time at the library this summer. I love it here so much and it really helps me with focusing in on my studies. My Chinese is improving every day and it’s really cool to see my progress.

master thesis adventures #36 1/2

First daily update on how my thesis writing is going. This morning session was slightly less productive since I only wrote a new paragraph (a little less than a page). But I did do a big reread of what I wrote yesterday, fixed up a few sentences and typos and also checked the notes. I also went through the big list I made last week of things I need to include in this chapter, I crossed off everything I have mentioned already, and finally I reorganized the other informations I still have to include in an order that makes sense. So in my afternoon writing session I can just go for it since I already have the order in which to write things in. I imagine I will do a rough draft of that and then clean it up in the next session. Overall these one hour writing sprints seem to work well which is giving me a lot of hope. I will now go for a walk to wind down and I'll be back in the afternoon with an update after my second daily writing session.

Summer so far: comps reading, ballet, and long hours in local coffee shops. As much work as it is, I am greatly appreciating the flexibility and individual pace of exam prep. Especially when the view beyond the window is bursting with lush, vibrant summer leaves.

my partner was a TA for an intro-to-subject course in grad school. finals week rolls around and the students are required to submit this big module assignment they've had like a month to do for a decent chunk of their grade. if you've submitted everything, you'll see a summary screen with a star beside each module name showing it's been completed.

an hour before the assignment deadline, he receives an email from a student claiming they completed the assignment, but the system is not allowing them to submit. there's an image attached to the email. partner goes to open what he assumes is a screenshot of that summary page.

instead, he sees that the student has taken a photo of their laptop from about 2 feet away, with that page open. strange, but it wouldn't be the first time a college freshman has lacked the tech literacy to take a screenshot. he almost doesn't look twice at it, but he realizes something about it just feels a little bit...off. so he zooms in.

the student had CUT STARS OUT OF CONSTRUCTION PAPER and TAPED THEM TO THEIR LAPTOP SCREEN BESIDE EACH MODULE NAME. you could see where they actually had completed the first couple of modules, but the stars for all the subsequent ones were like, double the size of the first two and exactly as uneven/irregular as you'd expect if you were freehanding them with scissors.

probably would've been quicker and easier to just photoshop them in but no, this student took a refreshingly creative, arts-and-crafts approach to getting an academic misconduct case
