TRIVIA
Characteristics:
Fibions, for the most part, look like blue-shaded Rana with the same black sclera, pointed ears, and black hair.
Fibions are thin, lanky people; same as the Rana they blend in with while on land.
Rana and Fibion share a common/recent ancestor similar to how Tenebrox and Humans are very similar.
Unlike Rana, Fibion skin does not change when night falls. This is normally not too noticeable unless someone is actively staring and keeping notes.
Fibion have a specialized respiratory system. While in water, they make use of their numerous gills (a row between each rib). On land, they first must actively take a deep gulp of air to switch to nasal breathing. The opposite is needed to breathe underwater, they need to take a deep gulp of water and push it through their gills (similar to when you force the leftover air out of your lungs after exhaling, except you’re not breathing… so like a deep grunt)
Fibion do not have webbed fingers, but they do have webbed toes for easier swimming.
Fibion skin is, if healthy, always moisturized
Locations:
Fibion live off the coasts of Blutrasla’s continents in underwater cave communities. During the wet season, they venture on land to indulge in the unique cuisine (cooked food is very interesting) and to keep up-to-date with Blutrasla’s magical and technological growth.
While on land, Fibion have a hard time walking with the loss of water buoyancy.
They stay away from dry regions and high altitudes. Fibion have difficulty breathing at high altitude and have extreme thirst when in dry regions. However, in the more moderate regions of Blutrasla, Fibion get by just fine for the 5 wet months of the Wet Season by having a daily 1hr soak in water. They prefer mineralized or salted water, but any water will do.
Many Fibion visiting land can be spotted if you watch for vibrant blue-shaded “Rana” walking about at night with at least one canteen or flask of water at their hip. But people don’t know about Fibion.
Lore:
Fibion like to keep their identities a secret, usually fleeing back to sea if found out and only rarely staying on land to start a Pogen family with another race.
To the people of Blutrasla, Fibion are mythical creatures who don’t exist. Mythology states Fibion are shapeshifters made of water who copy your appearance to learn about your secrets to later reveal them to everyone when they see fit... then drag your soul into the sea for feeding. This is rooted in the fact that Fibion have great memories, often leave wet hand marks on wooden doors, and look similar to Rana. Parents tell stories of Fibion to their children to keep them out of trouble when the parents have their backs turned, or are not watching.
Before physical adulthood, it is frowned upon in Fibion society to visit the land above. Any Fibion venturing to the land before the age of 20 are punished heavily.
Fibion finish their mandatory education at 20 years of age.
Around the age of 30, Fibion are encouraged to spend a full Wet Season on land as a show of maturity and ability to thrive. When returning after one of these visits, the Fibion’s family will hold a feast celebrating the Fibion’s true adult status.
After their adulthood visit, Fibion don’t always stay on land for the entirety of the Wet Season and only visit like one would visit another city for vacation.
In the past, they used to weave cloth from various sea plants. Now that they're making yearly trips on land, they are taking cloth and using that for clothing. They generally stay away from thick fabrics because they retain water/mold fast/are heavier on their bodies. On land, they wear thin cloth but try to keep themselves covered to avoid moisture loss from the sun. They fucking love hats and gloves.
Underwater, Fibion live in clans. Larger caves house larger clans. Sometimes a female will decide she has different views and convince a portion of the clan to move with her. Then they start scouting for new cave systems to start a new clan.
Clans generally have little contact between each other apart from trade, but most clan interactions are peaceful. There are some more aggressive clans though, and they live deeper underwater
Fibion elemental mages, since it's easier, prefer water magic and after that is earth. But, for those who venture on land for longer periods of time/more frequently, it is not uncommon for them to know other elements too.
Rather than “jobs,” Fibion are given a list of roles they would be suited for when they finish their mandatory education (from which hey choose one role). Roles include traders (with other clans or with land communities), merchants, community cooks, hunters, farmers, researchers, inventors, educators, advisors, healthcare workers, etc. Some Fibion communities live in caves with air pockets and use the opportunity to research/make items difficult to research/make underwater.
If a Fibion does not enjoy their role, they can easily switch and train for a new one from their given list.
If a Fibion turns out to be ill-fitted for a role, there is no shame. The responsibility falls onto the advisors for not properly analysing the Fibion.
Instead of personal success, Fibion value community health and wellbeing. “Do good and share” is a phrase often told to young Fibion.
