I just love this scene in chapter 57 so much:

It starts with Xie Lian being recognized as a GOD, AS HE SHOULD !!!!

Then this lovely panel with a Dianxia shrine!

Both their expressions are so overwhelming (+they're GORGEOUS)

Xie Lian, being so moved and thankful by that gesture makes me cry (You deserve all of that bby, please stop thinking otherwise😭😭)

+ the Hua Cheng close-up just silently observing the whole scene and grinning, most definitely also thinking about how much Xie Lian deserves all the recognition ! He loves to see Gege being revered.

And the final frame showing everyone leaving so in the very next chapter we finally get to see domestic HuaLian.

xie lian and hua cheng are both snarky sarcastic assholes and that’s actually so important and why it’s a bit irritating when people mischaracterize hua cheng as someone who would never say something that would annoy xie lian. they have a shared bitchy sense of humor and that’s so central to xie lian falling for hua cheng and for hua cheng falling for xie lian The Person rather than xie lian The God.

yes xie lian loves hua cheng’s bitchy remarks, we see that all throughout the novel when xie lian laughs to himself as hua cheng is a bitch to assorted heavenly officials, but i think what’s even more important is that they love teasing each other. so much.

we see it pretty early on, in the poking the ghost king chapters when xie lian’s reaction to hua cheng laughing at him is to dramatically roll over and be like “no more talking i’m going to SLEEP >_<” (but he’s not really mad and he still perks up to listen when hua cheng brings up “next time” and revealing his true form). and like of course we have the infamous dinner date in ghost city during which xie lian is called out for impotence in front of hua cheng…and hua cheng is just like “hahahaha gege you can’t get it up?? why didn’t you tell me?” to which xie lian responds dramatically and calls hua cheng insincere (and internally contemplates suicide) but then 10 mins later is holding hua cheng’s hand and flirting while “practicing calligraphy.”

and like. xie lian does it too. he takes full teasing advantage of the whole mini hua cheng thing and (after reassuring hc that he doesn’t have to be strong all the time) spends as much time as possible squeezing his cheeks and tossing him around like he’s a plushie.

but the most notable act of xie lian teasing is during the scene where he drops the line, “only after having met you did i rediscover that it’s such a simple thing to be happy.” xie lian says this while struggling through hysterical laughter after spending an entire afternoon teasing the shit out of hua cheng for his terrible attempt at a lang ying disguise.

like… hua cheng makes him laugh! and xie lian makes hua cheng laugh! they both have the exact same annoying bitchy weird sense of humor and like… god. isn’t finding someone who just gets your stupid jokes, someone who will tease you and let you tease them right back…. isn’t that the simplest form of happiness?
