And they're not some rare exception to the rule, either!!!

About 25% of black swan couples consist of two swans of the same sex (typically, two males).

These couples will court each other, build a nest, and raise their young together in a more-or-less committed monogamous relationship.

In fact, these same-sex couples have a high success rate of 80% when raising their young to adulthood, as opposed to the 30% of their heterosexual counterparts! Two big buff papa swans are better than one when it comes to stomping on invaders of nesting territory.

"But," I hear you say, "where do their baby floofballs come from? Does mpreg exist among black swans?"

Alas, no, but there is a very elegant solution to this. The swan couple may simply temporarily associate themselves with a female swan.

Afterwards, the female swan deposits their eggs and swims off free to live her single girlie life if she wishes (or, find a boyfriend. Preferably one who isn't already committed to another boyfriend.)

So whenever someone commits the naturalistic fallacy "homosexuality bad because unnatural >:(" I like to point out not only their glaring illogicality, but also, respectfully, there is homosexuality happening in the local lake right now.

This concludes my Ted Talk on gay swans.

To expand on a few things:

- The weakest/most vulnerable part of their bodies is the shoulder socket, as it's surrounded by bare skin and the spiracle openings. The back and chest fur usually does a pretty good job of hiding it. If you were a slugcat with a spear, this is where you would want to aim.

- The spines on their back are hollow. This is mainly for communication, as they produce a louder noise when bristling (which they do when scared, angry or upset). Alongside clicking their mandibles, they can't really make any other noises and are generally silent.

- The layout of the Scavenger's key internal organs is pretty consistent amongst most other chordate-equivalent animals (paired ventral nerve cords, dorsally-placed heart, lungs/gills towards the back with nearby spiracles). It's not horrendously efficient for the more developmentally advanced creatures such as scavengers, as they're mostly holdover traits from their simpler, molluscan ancestors.

- Most of the finger joints locks together when a fist is made, absorbing shock when knuckle-walking. Scavengers communicate using sign language, so despite this their hands and finger joints are surprisingly dextrous!

Skywings!! I finally decided on some design elements for them so here’s some new stuff ( the male Skywings I’ve drawn before are just younger, that’s why they look a lil different, it’s not a retcon shhh). They’re birds I have to give them bird thing you understand.

A lot of things about skywing society have changed recently. Aerie, once a term that was used to describe smaller family groups, can now be used to describe large tracts of land governed by a lead family of nobles, appointed to lead subsections of the Queens domain. The Cliff Skywings (ones from the northish mountain-forested regions) are the ones the other dragons are most familiar with and are currently the dominant group, with a Cliff skywing being the current queen, uniting disparate aeries under her newly formed military with the proposed goal of gaining more land and resources from their neighbors, drawing on the average Skywings’ desperation for better living conditions and security against famine and disease. Cliffs have a much more rigid gender divide (which they see as a reflection of their bodies’ Event-given “purposes”, the female lays eggs and more or less just leaves, leaving care of them with the males other than delivering kills), which has been reinforced further by legislation by the Queen (for example, adding “marriage” as a thing to officially lock down partners of a female rather than have it be a less formal arrangement/the males switch between partners and there wasn’t a lot of female supervision on eggs as long as new workers for the family were being made. The marriage thing was proposed to make it easier for females to ensure their eggs weren’t just being discarded/replaced with another females/their sire running off and not supporting the group, and to help make record-keeping and direct inheritance/successor stuff easier since again it makes sure that males aren’t running off with the eggs to do whatever (But the main motivation is that it helps keep property and wealth tied to the female, since she now has exclusivity with a specific pool of males to work with and can pass things directly to successors that for sure came from them. It also limits social mobility for males, keeping them reliant and in service to a female. This also allows the nobility to have a large group of suitors bound to them under threat of punishment and homelessness to raise more successors and workers for them). I’m still kinda working on this system some things may not work. It’s kind of a combo of birds of prey where females and males are different sizes for less hunting competition between each other (different prey size needs) and for the female to be able to defend the nest, except the male is the one in the nest raising eggs (having duller coloration to blend in). M are smaller because there’s usually a couple of them there in the nesting area, they work together and don’t need size because the female is providing food and defense). Plains and boreal are more monomorphic, sharing care more equally. Idk idk

Here’s a map of super generalized populations for those with very distinct groups based on appearance/environmental specialization btw. I wanted to figure out where im talking about here (does Not reflect past or present borders and is very messy I’ll need to work on it, this is just kinda where they tend to live). The text got smudged but it’s meant to say that open water seawings migrate around the continent. Technically should’ve added Icewings too since their polar guys look different but theyre found in just a very narrow strip at the very top left of land there.

I made their eyes a bit bigger and more owl-like compared to the last time I drew them, but the size depends on how lidded they are, the individual, etc.

Icewings have great vision compared to the other dragons (Seawings can see much better underwater with them big ol eyes. Skywings are their only contender, and even then those guys can’t read anything a foot from their face because they’re so specialized to long-distance viewing. Icewings have more range to how clear everything is). Their pack crests (made from decorative patterns of rope) are very complex, as they can see the details even at a distance. Simplifications are made to the shape and colors for generalization and to avoid confusion on the battlefield .
