“And I guess I also need to get used to those downsides of phones.” Jonathan shook his head, placing his phone back into his pocket before tilting his head in slight confusion at the following remark. “Buzz…what? I think I’ve heard of that a few times. But yeah you know, just work, and things. The stuff I consider serious at least.” He nodded.

“Porvoo? That’s interesting.” Now world locations were certainly more his speed, being well traveled for centuries. “And seven decades? impressive….what made you pick Finland?” Jonathan curiously asked. “Well, I don’t you’ll have much trouble gathering interest. I suppose you’re aware of everything that’s been going on here lately.” 

“There are up and downsides to everything.” he answered vaguely. “Buzzfeed, think of it as a platform that is wonderfully expert when it comes to wasting time.” he explained with a small shrug. “It’s good you see your work as serious, though I hope you enjoy it as well. Work should always have a little levity to it somehow.”

“It is, I miss it already.” But he felt he could do more good here. “The safe haven became a beacon of sorts to vampire’s more than any other kind of supernatural and by setting up my practice there I could help them.” he explained, “Now, twenty years later that practice is established and I’ve left it in good hands to come and do some good here.” he nodded, “Hearing all the misfortune that’s befallen this place I wanted to help.”

“Concerning? I find it just coming up with more creative comparisons.” Sebastian mused with a small, cheeky smirk. He never felt right around doctors. Not just because the experience wasn’t ever positive- he just felt like he had to act differently. He had to act normal. Pretend to be like the masses. “Perhaps. Or maybe it’s just become a little more closed off.”

His grin disappeared, eventually, as he thought it all through. It would be just perfect to bring Morgan in for this- only, how could he break it down for her. “Well, what ages do you treat?” He paused then, again, thinking it through. “Do you take children on, too? Like- five year olds?” He never lacked words, yet, now, he could barely form a sentence.

“No, I mean there are much more concerning ways to behave than making said creative comparisons.” he said with a small chuckle, “Are you alright? You seem a tad, on edge.” he gestured slightly, Vaan had been reading people for years, it was a habit that one couldn’t break out of easily. “Well, it has never been that way with me, I can promise you that.” he said with a small nod.

“There isn’t exactly an age limit on this process.” Vaan told the other, “I can see young children, five year-olds,” he confirmed with another nod, “And millennium olds. Though in the case of younger children I always recommend the parent be present in the room for some of the opening session and remain in the building for each session from then on.” he explained.

“Valentin Remington, but people call me Val,” he said, taking his hand and shaking it. “I didn’t, really, and we can mark today as a walk in, then I’ll make an appointment the next time.” And maybe, for once, he can somewhat fix his life together and stick around and not fly off the handle each time he gets mad.

“Val.” in return, his hand resting likely on the desk, “That’s fine. If you’d like to follow me through then, I haven’t had time to take on a receptionist yet.” he explained, locking the door so no one would walk in mid-way through and direction Val to his office space. “Please, have a seat. If you’d like anything to drink just let me know, I have juice, water, coffee, tea and blood.” he offered, gently closing the door behind them.

Nina smiled politely as he spoke, standing up and smoothing her hands down her skirt. “Nina is fine,” she said, with a soft little smile. She followed him inside, her fingers twisting together.  “Oh, water would be nice,” she said, with a little smile. She laughed softly at her own nerves. “I’ve never done this before.”

“Nina then, please call me Vaan.” he said with a small nod, going to the water cooler in the corner of his room and getting her a glassful. Setting it down he went to his own armchair and nodded, “Well, there’s nothing to be nervous about. All we’ll ever do in here is talk. And most importantly, you will always have the authority on what we talk about and how we doe so. But, before we begin there are a few legalities I need to make sure you’re away of, alright?”

Every answer Vaan gave him only led Emile to more questions that made him bite his tongue. This was not a session and he wasn’t after free assistance either. Emile could certainly move enough money around to properly pay for this service if he chose. It was just hard not to go for a mile when given an inch with his impulse control as poor as it was. 

“And it’s all confidential? What I say in a session and such?” Emile inquired steering any further probing questions away from him and back to the general. “I’ll have to think about it. Do you ever do night appointments? I don’t frequently go out in daylight like today,” Emile explained. 

“Of course.” he nodded, “However, that privilege, as the law terms it goes away under two conditions; if I have sufficient cause to believe you’re about to commit great harm to either yourself or others. If I believe that then privilege goes away under the need to protect lift. Does that make sense?” he asked, it was always necessary his patients (prospective or not) understood that.

“That’s fine,” Vaan smiled, “Take all the time you need. And I can, in Porvoo I often did evening appointments; though there’s often no sun at all come winter there.” he added softly, “Provided you schedule with me we can met whenever suits you best.”

She nodded, her arms drawn tight around herself as she followed him into his office. Everything inside was muted, all the edges softened. Her gaze took in all four corners of the room, flitting to the window, before she took a seat on the edge of the couch, arms still tucked around herself. 

“No, that’s fine.” She’d had a bag of blood before leaving her brother’s, careful to keep her stomach full. “I don’t - well I don’t even know if I like tea anymore. Coffee’s fine, but I haven’t tried tea yet.”

“Flavours tend to be a little more muted, they don’t quite itch that scratch we had as humans, but the pleasure of partaking will become stronger with time.” he assured her. “But with that settled there are a few things that need to be said before we begin in full, alright?”

“Everything you say to me in this space is privileged, I cannot tell anyone about it by law. However, if I have just cause to believe that based on our sessions you blame to do irreparable harm to either yourself or others, then that privilege may be broken in pursuit of the preservation of life. Do you understand?” he asked, voice maintaining a calm and even tone.

The gesture was minute just like many of Emile’s reactions and despite his effort to keep it brief and undetectable he knew a vampire ––especially one trained–– in psychology would be able to pick on the flash of hope before it disappeared into the void again. “What about younger vampires?” Emile asked as casually as possible though it was clear he was referring to himself. Part of him was looking for a closed door just so he could get the disappointment in all at once without prolonging it. 

The question caused Emile to pause and look down at the small scuff on his shoe. It was a loaded question and not one Emile was sure he had a simple answer to. Of course he struggled with being a vampire each and every day of his existence. Any time he was out somewhere during the day or in too big of a crowd he grew uncomfortable having to suppress his nature. Still that struggle wasn’t what preoccupied his mind. “No,” Emile decided to answer. “I don’t think I have any troubles there,” he went on to lie. “I guess it’s more my social identity,” Emile explained. “If that’s a thing.”

Vaan had been trained in (and spent many years) learning about body language, he could almost read along with the other’s thought process, enough to see that he seemed to want to make use of his services even if he wasn’t being quite opaque about it. “Certainly.” he nodded, “In the end, age is one of the smaller factors, as is species. I am here to help anyone that I can; provided they ask me for it.” This wasn’t a treatment that he could (or would) force upon anyone.

Despite what some people may believe he was not a walking lie detector, in tune though he was with the bodies signals there was always more to it than TV or Film made it seem. So, while he could hardly tell from if the other was lying to him at this point he instead focused on what he was told. “I see. Well, finding, or rather discovering who it is we truly are is not an easy process, but it is one I think I could provide some help for you with.” he said softly smiling once again. “Only should you want to of course. My door is open as am I should you have questions.”

“Yes! Hello!” She spoke up eagerly; ready to start a conversation with the male, and quite frankly end it as soon as possible. She didn’t even pay attention to the name of the clinic that he so politely announced. “I’m in a hurry, so-..” She lied, before pausing. She had nowhere else to be, yet the sheer fact that she was standing in a clinic was probably the only thing in this world that could freak her out. 

Her gaze drifted down to her bag, as she dug inside and pulled out an empty bottle of pills, and a prescription, “My doctor is on the Bahamas, living his best life, and I need a new prescription, so he told me to look for-…” She paused once again, as she tried to remember the name of the clinic that he mentioned, “the new Something clinic.” She offered him a small chuckle, “I might be at the wrong place, though. Are you a psychologist, or a psychiatrist?” She asked, suddenly nervous over the fact that he might not have a permitted to prescribe the medication for her sleep deprivation.

Vaan raised an eyebrow slightly at the woman’s reaction. Between her demeanour and choice of words it seemed easy enough to surmise that the other wasn’t overly comfortably being here. That and he was somewhat concerned her doctor hadn’t thought to make arrangements before taking time off; any practitioner worth their salt wouldn’t be so careless when it came to a patients well-being.

Unless of course things were less than truthful. “I see.” he replied calmly after a moment, rising up from his seat, “I was just about to go and get myself something to eat. Perhaps you could join me and fill me in on the particulars you require.” She may calm a little further outside the clinic and he could look over this situation a little better. “I’ve always found that pills, while they can certainly be useful aids, are best when paired with regular checkups.” he smiled, “I’m qualified as both, the benefits of a long life span.” After finding his niece he’d plenty of time to specialise in as many aspects of it as possible.

“Well, if I were to compare you to the state of the building, I might as well just sign up to a room with comfortable walls, don’t you think?” Sebastian mused as he continued to look around the place. He really didn’t care, but he was simply stalling before he would have to deal with the actual situation. 

“As in, Finland? Cause advertising that might just improve your clientele, and bring in more people.” He spoke again, finally focusing back on the man. He knew he had to talk about the actual reason he was here. “Indeed I do, Vaan. But why don’t you tell me who and what you exactly deal with? It’s a rather… complicated subject.”

“There are stranger things than comparing a person with a building, and certainly more concerning behaviour.” he answered evenly. “Besides, the professional care given out these days has evolved a great deal from a cell with padded walls.” It was a shame the profession had once thought that was the best solution.

“Yes, that’s correct.” he nodded, “I would rather not have people come and see me because I have a history, but rather because they know they need some help.” he replied. “I have been in practice for over a hundred years by this point, specialising in mental blocks and trauma suffered by, or adjacent to, elements of the supernatural.” he explained.

“Oh okay only four,” Patrik mused, the corners of his lips dropping.  The scholars that had attended his parents parties had always been his least favourite.  They were the ones that believed they were better than you because they had money and a brain.  As if Patrik hadn’t had an elite education himself.   “A contract of employment I’m wanting written up.” 

Patrik gave a nod of acknowledgement, though why the term shrink could be offensive he had no idea.  “People here call me disconnected, whatever that means.  And I guess there was that time I got really, really drunk and screamed at my father in front of a crowd.  But I mean he had just taken me hunting and made me shoot a guy.”

“I don’t see the point in gaining more than I need.” He’d only learned so that he would be seen as a professional in an academic manner and not merely for his practice. “And what sort of employment is this? Are you a small business owner?” he asked, there were few occasions to actually need a contract drawn up, odds were Vaan would probably need to send him on his way for more up-to-date advice.

And then he said that. It wasn’t the events themselves so much as the way they were spoken and the preface. “I see. And do you think that the lack of inhibition brought about by the alcohol may have exposed some deeper thoughts you had about your father? Enough to cause you to lash out after what he made you do?” The question was posed so calmly, as thought it were part of an everyday conversation.

“Thank you,” Emile said as he took the pamphlets to thumb through the various titles of them without going into any of them in much detail. If figured it was all fairly standard and he didn’t want to waste the man’s time having him stand there while Emile read. 

“And are these services available for everyone in town?” Emile asked as he tucked the pamphlet’s into his back pocket before giving the man his attention once more. He could tell the other was a vampire but that by no means meant that he worked with vampires. Emile often felt like there wasn’t much help for him or his fellow kind in town and he wouldn’t be shocked if the clinic didn’t want to take on the tax that came with offering counsel to the eternal. Significantly more problems could brew and fester in a vampire that a mortal simply didn’t have the time to harbor. 

Vaan nodded his head slightly in way of an answer, “It’s no problem. A lot of people find it easier to see how this works from a written word before having to deal with a person.” He knew well enough he could seem intimidating for his profession alone among some potential patients.

“Of course.” he said with a small nod, “If I were to admit to any kind of specialisation I would say I’ve worked with many aged vampires during my time in Porvoo.” The Finnish safe-haven had been good to him, “But it doesn’t matter what a patient is so much that they have need of me and want to be here, that’s all that’s needed.” he finished with a little smile. “Are you having some trouble regarding an element of your supernatural identity?” Vaan asked, steepling his fingers on the desk and looking at the other.

“Multi-disciplinary?  How many degrees do you have?” Patrik asked with mild interest.  Then again Patrik had no idea how old the vampire was.  He could be hundreds or thousands of years old which meant plenty of time to study a lot.  “Oh right, wrong side of the road.  That would make sense.  I’m guessing you don’t happen to know contracts very well?”  He figured there was no harm in asking.  

Taking the leaflet that was passed to him, he glanced over it.  “Oh right, you’re a… what’s the English slang term for it again?  Shrank?  I’ve been told I need one of them before.” 

“Only four.” He’d attained a law degree (or the equivalent training) back during his human life, from that he’d acquired a BSc, MSc and PhD in Psychology as soon as he’d been in a strong position to do so. “That depends entirely on what sort of contract you’re talking about.“ Business dealings were his main area of (some) expertise but even that had evolved so much since he’d last paid great attention to it.

“Shrink.” he answered gently, “Though it’s not always a positive term for us. Why have you been told you seek one out?” Vaan asked casually.

Coralie had seen the advertisements, had thought about it, but it had always been an abstract thought. It was something that tugged subconsciously as she tried to slot herself into the every day of Hollow Grove. It skirted the edges, as she focused on the concept of a home, and eight-hundred years of avoiding one. Perhaps that was too long. Perhaps there were too many towns, too many alleys, too many people she’d connected with only to leave behind.

It wasn’t anything concrete until she found herself pushing through the doorway, the tinkle of the bell surprising her. Because this wasn’t exactly planned, but maybe her feet were onto something her head wasn’t. “Oh, um…” She glanced around the office, finally settling on the person who’d addressed her. He looked friendly, smile gentle in a way that reminded her a little of Emmett, and she found herself returning it in kind. “Maybe? Do you have openings, or does Hollow Grove in its entirety keep you too busy?”

“Given that I’ve only been officially open-” he glanced at a wall clock, “About five hours I think it’s fair to say that I haven’t been fully booked up yet. Honestly I only planned on spending this afternoon finishing with my unpacking.” he said quietly, gesturing to the half a dozen boxes about the reception area. His office space was finished though, so there was nothing stopping him from taking some time to hear the woman’s concerns out; especially if he could help.

“I’ve only had a few pre-bookings and none that will arrive for a little while; should you wish I can see you now for the next hour?” he asked, resting his hands on the desk, it was an open invitation, she had every right to say now and return to her day until she felt more ready for the process.

The moment she had walked in long enough for her uncle to presume she was headed to her scheduled appointment was really that was needed before she had turned around with her hand on the doorknob to leave. Unfortunately whoever was present in the room had hardly given Farren the chance to make her daring escape which left the witch to release her grip on the doorknob and turn towards the voice. 

 “Ummm…” the redhead hummed in thought. Nothing more than an attempt to stall and give her time as she eventually came to meet the man’s gaze. “I just went to the wrong place. I was looking for the pet shop is that…is that around here? LIke across the street or something?”

Vaan raised an eyebrow slightly. After nearly a century of working in this field he was fairly sure he’d heard almost every excuse under the moon. “I may be new to the town, but even I know that there is no pet shop on this street.” he said quietly, a smile on his face all the while. “I’m not sure who you’re trying to placate by coming here only to leave before something happens but you don’t need to be secretive about it.”

He looked up at her from his seated position, wholly calm, still smiling, “This process is not something that I believe can be successful if it’s forced upon another. It needs to be your choice. I will only ask that you please be honest and not deceive the people around you, that can be a slippery slope.” he finished kindly, his voice never rising beyond a soft lilt.

Zinnia gave a little wave. “Nothing major, really,” she said. “I’m with the PD. Just wanted to make sure you’ve been settling into the neighborhood alright. Nothing that goes bump in the night or anything.” She grinned. “Well, nothing more than the usual,” she joked. “How’s the town treating you so far?”

Vaan smiled, “How kind of you. Though as one of the things several would say goes bump in the night I don’t think I’m being bothered by any of them.” he chuckled gently, his voice soft but easy, even pleasant to listen to, “I think I will like it here; it’s certainly different from Porvoo, so many vampire’s settled there that the wolf population was almost non-existent, I always thought that was a shame.”
