Everyone's Friend
Your character needs to be put through horrors so great that they don't even know how to ever talk about what happened. Years have passed and they have people they love and trust with their life now, but they're still unable to tell them about everything they've been through.
It's just too much and they've been shaped by it so thoroughly that talking about it in any way would feel like they're peeling their skin off and completely exposing every vulnerable part of themself.
As an autistic person, the implications of "if they really cared I wouldn't have to say it" culture are really scary. Because I want to know what hurts your feelings, what crosses your boundaries, where the line between teasing and being mean is at for you, what you need, and how to make you feel loved. And the implication that if my disability makes me unable to figure out these things through intuition alone, then I'm just not worth having around, is genuinely heartbreaking
stop villanizing disabled people. stop assuming we're just being lazy. stop assuming we could be trying harder. stop assuming that we'll "feel better" in a few weeks. stop assuming that we have the same energy levels as everyone else. thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Shout out to those of us whos disability has stopped them from being able to pursue their passions.
Shout out to those of us whos disability won't allow them to work.
Shout out to those of us whos disability is a source of embarrassment or shame for them.
Shout out to those of us whos disability is so severe that they're unable to communicate to us here.
Shout out to those of us whos disability causes them to struggle with hygiene.
Shout out to those of us whos disability leads to being grumpy and upset.
Shout out to those of us whos disability makes it difficult to maintain their appearance.
Shout out to those of us whos disability has cost them their friendship group.
Shout out to those of us whos disability is brushed off as a "funny" or "gross" condition.
Shout out to those of us whos disability leads to them needing carers.
Shout out to those of us whos disability makes them too ill to shower.
Shout out to those of us whos disability causes them to use mobility aids.
Shout out to those of us whos disability causes them to fear leaving the house.
Shout out to those of us whos disability is watered down into something that it isn't.
Shout out to those of us whos disability gives them exercise intolerance.
Woman who hasn't been held in a decade: oh I'm pretty low maintenance, yeah honestly I think I'd find that overwhelming or something, can I just hold your hand instead? If that's okay of course?
Woman who feels ill at the notion of taking up space: yeah I can stand. Yeah honestly it's no biggie I like standing. Do you mind if I lean here? It's okay to say no.
Woman who would rather die than be considered selfish: I'm really sorry to ask I'm probably just being annoying but could I ask for another pillow? Yeah there isn't one in the room. Yeah no worries I can just bunch up some towels if needed.
Woman who's most outlandish and fantastical fantasies are a coffee date and seeing a movie with someone: oh I don't get out much. Yeah I don't really like being around people. I'm pretty much an introvert. Or something like that yeah.
Woman who would break down screaming and crying if someone showed even a hint of affection in person, who would fall apart at the seams if you held her still and asked her if she was okay, woman who if allowed too would wrap herself around you and sob and weep until she became severely dehydrated: oh yeah sorry I spaced out for a second there. Yeah I'm doing alright.
i can handle one (1) Event™ per day. whether it be a phone call, an appointment, trip to the grocery store, play date with a friend, etc. only one, that's it. any more than that and i am Stressed
the neurodivergent experience:
20% of the time: wowwieee!!! i love my passions and interests!!!!! they make me so happy i want to jump up and down!!!!! weee!!!!!!! :3333333333
80% of the time: this mind is a prison
wait i just found out you can be nice to people and be their friend i thought we had to kill them all cause i was raised in a lab to be a living weapon
btw it's so fucking stupid you can be anxious physically in your body even after you've decided mentally you don't care. I'm supposed to be in charge here
I feel like not enough people realize that people under enormous strain act really really fucking Weird
things humans are known to do when stressed:
-hallucinate
-cry over what seems to be small things
-become furiously angry over what seems to be small things
-hit a self destruct button over and over again
-lose all sense of reality
-becoming straight up unable to communicate
-view every situation as life or death
-experience delusions/become vulnerable to irrational worldviews
-perceive hostility where none exists
-become extremely nauseous and/or throw up
-stop engaging in sleeping/eating/basic hygiene
-stop processing sensory input
-process way too much sensory input all at once
-lash out at others/themselves
-and more!
being able to recognize when a human (ie. you or another person) is so stressed out they cannot think clearly is VERY important for conflict resolution and diffusing emotional crisis. highly recommend trying to train yourself at being able to recognize that state of panic- there is a point in which logic and rationality is useless and you have to address the underlying emotional issue first. knowing that saves everyone a lot of pain and struggle.
Some of the mental illness communities and tags on here are so fucking hostile to those they consider "doing it wrong". Jesus fuck. I don't trust you if you're this hellbent on invalidating and fakeclaiming people who are trying to understand themselves better in a really vulnerable and difficult way. Fuck off
- you are not entitled to other people's experiences and you will never have authority on knowing another person better than they know themselves.
- You will not win by clinging this hard to the psychiatric system considering how elitist, heinously ableist and eugenicist it STILL is. You will not get more mental illness liberation by dicksucking the very systems that designate you as Other and Deviant. Diagnostics are not the be all end all of mental illness and brain divergence and you policing others about it will make you side with abusers whether you want it or not. Extremely insensitive to talk like this towards other mentally ill people when folks still get their rights and autonomy stripped away if they act a little too "insane" around professionals.
- That's literally extremely rude and cruel. Like that's it. You're being very cruel towards people who have certain experiences. Your insistence on clinging to your pain and passing forward hurt is not going to save you. You are a tar pit.
sleep disorders/conditions affecting sleep are no fucking joke man. they're more than just "takes an hour to fall asleep." like yeah that sucks but.
sleep issues can make people sleep all day and be awake all night no matter what they do. they can make people sleep for over half the day every day. they can make people stay up for over 24 hours frequently - and it just goes up from there. being up for days at a time just unable to sleep.
they can make people have a completely unpredictable sleep schedule too. not everyone is capable of going to bed and waking up at generally the same time, or maintaining it.
all this could be more temporary, or it could just be indefinite. like. having to live your life not knowing if you will or will not be conscious at any given time. you can't plan for fucking anything. you can miss almost every plan or event or obligation.
and everyone just hates you for it pretty much, thinking you're irresponsible and lazy.
be nicer to people with sleep problems. they make you physically and mentally feel like shit. they're not a choice.
fucked that you can’t fix other people especially when you really care about them. Oh so im just supposed to be there for you while you suffer. like a useless cunt gargoyle
