Arcane: League of Legends Season 1 + Favorite Quotes
One of the things I love, and I mean this extremely genuinely, one of the things I fucking love about Arcane is how resolutely it refuses to be subtle. Take this moment for example: Viktor has collapsed because he has terminal I Am Going To Fucking Die Disease, and he talks with Jayce about how he is going to die from his terminal Going To Fucking Die Disease
And then immediately SMASH CUT to Sevika throwing down onto the card table the Death card next to the Magician, who is portrayed with three arms and a cape oh hey that's just like Viktor LeagueofLegends what a funny coincidence hey I wonder why it's next to the Death card
and oh look he has a round thing with a magic rune on it oh gee I wonder where we've seen that Hexcore before
it's so good, I love it so much
speaking of not being subtle, hey remember how Mel spends episode 4 and 5 seducing Jayce into political corruption and also literally seducing him with sex and kisses?
anyway after they have sex and Viktor collapses from Going To Fucking Die Disease, Mel wakes up alone in her bed (and seems a little hurt by that, almost as though there's a bit more feeling behind it than just a convenient political seduction, huh) and that looks like this:
which then immediately match-cuts to Viktor in the exact same position on screen in the exact same composition from the exact same camera angle
because Mel and Viktor are two people who occupy the same emotional space in Jayce's life, you see, they are both his partners. Jayce has the same kind of relationship to both of them, and in going to bed with Mel he betrayed Viktor, which is why the sex scene is intercut with Viktor collapsing in pain and suffering, because when Jayce gets in bed with Mel he cheats on his partnership with Viktor, because Jayce and Viktor are partners, in the same way that Jayce and Mel are now partners.
anyway the point is, the inventor boys are lovers, your honour. my case rests on a bed of roses, gently caressing the ground beside it, inviting you to join it by the fire. it has a fine bottle of wine and a poem it wants to read to you.

The first real conversation Katniss has with Peeta is when he tells her that he wants to die as himself, that he doesn't want the games to change him into something he's not, and that he wants to keep his identity and prove he's more than just a piece in their games because that's the only thing he has left to care about.
The first time we see Lucy Gray she sings a song that basically says that nothing they could take from her was worth keeping. "Can't take my past. Can't take my history... You can't take my charm. You can't take my health."
The capitol has taken everything from them both, but at the same time, they could never take away who they are.
They are both likeable charismatic and funny, with the kindest hearts, and incredibly loyal to the people they care about.
At the same time, everything they do before the games, and during is calculated. Lucy Gray singing a love song and winning the hearts of the capitol. Peeta confesses he's in love with his district partner, therefore cementing her identity as desirable. Both of them know how to sway people with words, how to charm people, and how to manipulate crowds. Neither of them has any problem doing so to keep themselves, and the people they love safe.
Lucy Gray's song The Old Therebefore, about learning how to love and live her life to the fullest before death, a final and calculated stroke in a last-ditch effort to save herself from the arena. This evokes enough emotion in the watchers to get them to rise to their feet and plead for her life alongside Snow.
Snow, watching the 74th and preparing for the 75th Hunger Games sees Lucy Gray in Katniss. A young girl, from the 12th district. Unafraid at the reaping. Selling a false love story, manipulating a boy who loves her in order to get out and supporting the revolution with the mockingjay as her symbol.
He threatens her family to get her to sell that she and Peeta are in love, to prevent the revolution, because obviously, she's pretending. He's had experience with a girl just like her before. He has no doubt that she has the acting ability to sell this story because clearly, she manipulated the first Hunger Games in her favor, the same way Lucy Gray manipulated him.
Watching the interviews for the 75th Hunger Games he realizes-
Katniss is just an impulsive girl, in a Mockingjay dress she didn't know about, made by someone who supports the revolution.
Peeta is a boy who has the ability to move people with just his words. He made Katniss desirable, he was the one who sold the love story, and he was the one to make their romance seem real. Katniss only started the revolution because she would rather risk dying with him than live without him. A concept President Snow was completely unfamiliar with. And it is with all these realizations crashing around him Peeta drops the baby bomb. He knows the baby's not real, and so does Snow. But it evokes enough emotion in the watchers to get them to rise to their feet and plead for the lives of the tributes.
Is it Lucy Gray or Peeta?
By the time Snow realizes he's made a mistake, it's too late.
Peeta is still charming and manipulating the capitol. Katniss is in love.
He goes up against a kindhearted boy expecting to beat Sejanus again, only to find out that it's Lucy Gray he's fighting; knowing he will never be able to escape their ghosts.
-from a conversation i had with @grandtyphoonpoetry breaking down every character in the hunger games.
Watching the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is realizing that despite the obvious implication that Lucy Gray is the songbird and Snow is the Snake…it’s likely the opposite.
Lucy gray controlled the snakes and used them as her weapon of choice, the snake biting him was Lucy’s kiss goodbye. She is the snake.
Snow sold Sejanus out through the jabberjay’s, they were his tool to fly back home and back into power. He is the songbird.
But at the same time…as in her Ballad, Lucy Gray flys away with the mockingjays after she sings the Hanging Tree one final time while fleeing Snow. She is physically a songbird. And Snow chose to work with Dr. Gaul, who created and controlled those snakes. He was the snake who betrayed his friend.
Who is the songbird and who is the snake? It’s unclear, but isn’t that the mystery?
You know what - Jekyll isn't Hyde's opposite, Utterson is.
One thing that's repeatedly made clear in the first three chapters is that everyone likes Utterson. For no reason. The man has nothing to recommend him, he's just kind of there. He's described over and over as the human equivalent of the color taupe. And yet. He's eminently loveable. Enfield considers their walks the highpoint of his week. Lanyon genuinely enjoys his company. People really appreciate the way he hangs out after their guests leave not doing or saying anything. (I also love him a lot, so there's that).
And this is the precise inverse of how everyone reacts to Hyde. There is nothing wrong with him and I hate him so much. So much that it's disturbing. I want to murder this man in cold blood and I can't figure out why.
Similarly, Utterson is the embodiment of restraint. Every word is calculated, he's never done anything wrong in his entire life (it says so in chapter 2). Whereas the whole point of Hyde is unrestrained indulgence.
And they are in direct competition over Jekyll. If there's a Jungian power trio going on Jekyll isn't Superego, he's Ego, right in the middle.
"If he is Mr Hyde, I shall be Mr Seek" < they're complementary! Hyde's mirror is Utterson. So far the story has primarily been about the two of them. Jekyll is the battleground, the contested territory, but the struggle is between Utterson and Hyde
op i love this analysis so much i thank you. may your life be beautiful, your pillow be cold, your winter be soft, and your food be good.
I made this into its own post because i cant stop thinking about it the most underrated character in the movie: Iosef Vronsky
im still am convinced that it's wasn't the Maid or Katya by the end. it doesn't line up at all. It was Iosef.
as we see in the flashback Iosef was ex-KGB, he had the training and lets not forget the motive. he was betrayed in the worst way by the man he loved, he was exiled to the wilderness and lost everything.
yeah he was avowedly a pacifist but remember he was also a hunter, he survived the Siberian wilderness for 15 years! he was willing to make compromise for survival or as he put it: "to sustain the life from those who are already dead"
He doesn't view himself as a person anymore, he sees nothing but a worthless failure
observe how when he looks in the mirror to shave and the camera instead draws ur eye to the hunting trophy starting at the audience. a metaphor for how Isoef views himself
now what does that mean? We see later in the scene in the factory that he doesn't mean that literally but that those "whose souls have naught but stagnation creeping in them" no intellectual or emotional growth. which explains his hunting of animals, the odd death of O'Neil,
but most importantly the everything in the otherwise misplaced cathedral scene. a scene that is out of left field UNLESS IT WAS IOSEF.
So his philosophy of pacifism says the dead can be killed to help the living, dead means something with no chance of spiritual growth, he views himself as a dead waste of space.
notice that even tho they're at the funeral for O'Neil, Katya looks at Iosef with mourning as if he's the one in the casket. A hint at Iosef's lack of worth for his own life
in conclusion: Iosef set things up so ppl would want to kill him, hed get his revenge by proxy againt the Lieutenant, and his death would be t,he catalyst to ensure Goncharov wouldnt have to go thru the same suffering as he di!
did bc in the end Iosef still loved Goncharov. not as a lover or brother but as him seeing himself. seeing a hypothetical verison of him to not follow the same path Iosef did.
Which makes Goncharov's decision in the final act all the more tragic
ngl i was looking up vronsky from anna karenina then i saw this and just had to reblog since it's Goncharov
Redrew my favorite scene from my favorite movie
one interesting fact about goncharov i haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that all the clocks in the film run slightly faster than actual clocks (something something running out of time, etc etc). it’s something like 1.3 times faster. it’s subtle but really impressive
one of my absolute favorite things about alchemy stars is that no one respects navi in any way, and that theyre a very fun twist on typical gacha protags
generally for gacha protagonists you have 3 flavors: Just Some Guy who everyone has a crush on, you're like the only coke left on the world so everyone needs you or something, or youre supposedly the Goku of tactics and everyone is impressed by you.
navi is. a fucking whiny brat who no one takes seriously and only has a place in the world because they were literally dragged out of a hole in the ground. the reason the characters grow to care about navi is because navi is just so endearing as a person and especially as someone who is truly experiencing the world for the first time after 17 years of only knowing darkness. they constantly pester people to take care of themselves or to stop destroying their house. they in turn also get pestered by people trying to make them take better care of themselves. navi gets bedtime stories read to them by children half their age but one of their biggest rivals is also a pack of children who makes fun of them. there are a handful of characters who have a crush on you but part of it is born out of the adventure and some of them just Really want to watch navi squirm and also dissect them. multiple characters either teacher or parentzone navi immediately because theyre like "ok, this kid is fucking hilarious" and want to watch them survive. navi is into the military aesthetic of illumina because it gave them legitimate rolemodels in barton and gram but they also told reinhardt herself (their boss) to get over herself when it came to petty politics. navi has taken the daughter of the literal ruler of the city in the goddamn sky to hang out with their two biggest enemy factions, both of which flirted with her, just because they were nice to them. navi has a genuine mean and petty streak of reciepts and isnt afraid to whip them out against characters trying to squeeze favors from them for whatever reason. navi is a goddamn abuela of a character who has to be telling people to be responsible with their explosives and is always one step away from beating someone con la chancla. literally every character has access to navis dms and usually take the time to annoy them.
so true op
