my thesis about Breaking Bad fans is that they are TV fans in the same way that speedrunners are video game fans -- the canon material becomes the tool with which they play, but their engagement is on an entirely separate level from the story
The original clip for anyone wants to see it:
there's a special place in my heart for people who made an effort to be my friend regardless of how quiet or distant i can get at times
Google Chrome has been installing an AI model on users devices without their consent.
UPDATE:
This article seems to have a good fix that doesn't require registry edits. So far, the weights.bin file hasn't redownloaded on my pc after this. Chrome might undo it whenever it updates, but at least it's a quick fix.
TL;DR for that article's fix:
Paste "chrome://flags" in chrome search bar
On that page, search for “optimization-guide-on-device-model” and set its dropdown menu to "disabled"
Repeat for “prompt-api-for-gemini-nano”
Click "relaunch button on bottom of screen
Delete the entire “OptGuideOnDeviceModel” folder in your %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\ folder
PLUS, Google now says they're rolling out options to PERMANENTLY opt out of on-device AI models. For that, type "chrome://settings/system" in chrome search, then disable "On-device AI"

Are you not freaking out about the smoke and your birds? I'm in SE Michigan and my area smells like a house fire and I'm about to panic even though I don't even have peafowl to worry about in my backyard. I hope you and your flock (and of course your loved ones) come through this okay.
Is it just little birds or specifically indoor birds like parakeets that are so sensitive to chemicals in the air? And of course if you've already answered this several times, don't even think twice about this message: I haven't been on Tumblr much today so I haven't seen any of your earlier posts yet.
I have a very specific and relatively simple flow chart for worrying about things, that prevents a lot of stress.
I cannot change the weather. I cannot change the air quality. The smoke will pass, hopefully quickly.
The birds are inside of their coops, for what little protection that will be. I cannot put them anywhere safer, as they won't tolerate being in my house together, even if I wanted to risk injuring them and me, in order to catch all of them. Bug is in the house, and her babies. Putting filtration inside the coops would require moving the air more, and that would be liable to stir up more dust than it clears.
The worst of it does seem to have passed overnight, and the quality is predicted to improve hourly from here.
I went out and checked on the birds when I got up this morning, and everyone appeared to be fine. It smells a little here, but not badly, definitely not worse than when my neighbors burn brush.
Everyone has fresh water and food inside the coops, and I will leave them closed into their coops for another few hours at least until we're past the worst of it.
Until then.... instead of worry, I choose hope.
