Yourself as a character. Show off your own style or integrate yourself into your favorite animated media.
Create your own mythic marvel by using your imagination, combining traits from existing animals, and drawing inspiration from the biologically unknown. Alternatively, create your depiction of an existing creature from mythos.
Create and grow your own tree,fungi, lichen, fruit, or plant specimen. Design every aspect of it and create a scientific chart pointing out it’s different parts and functions. Does it have healing properties, or is it a poison? Is it edible? Show off your technical drawing skills.
Depict your favorite holiday, festival, or celebratory event. Recreate a memory, design the perfect Halloween costume or ugly Christmas sweater, depict a scene from religious text, show us what you do on the solstice. Get abstract, draw iconography-design the perfect birthday cake!
Express odd juxtaposition in any way you can. Put a fork in an apple and throw it in the toilet - juxtaposition still life. Depict a scene where things are out of place, like Aladdin flying over China, Marco Polo standing next to Kublai Khan, a music box in Ariel’s grotto, the Naked Cowboy in New York City (though he’s kind of important).
Draw an object from 4-6 different angles - using only one line per drawing. This is called contour drawing. Your pen may never leave the paper until you are done drawing.
Create a memento mori. Remind the viewer of death. Depict dark macabre imagery and themes. Sketch a funeral scene, design a grave stone, let the skeletons dance. Alternatively depict a scene from macabre/horror/dark literature - be it fact or fiction. Remind us of the fragility of life and it’s inevitable end.
Fan Art -Draw your favorite character or a scene from your favorite book. Options are limitless, but please heed copyrights!
Create a 3-7 panel comic.
Start doodling and don’t stop for at least 30 minutes.
Pick a song and create a piece depicting or inspired by it. If the lyrics tell a story, feel free to create a comic of the plot or a portrait of a character. Alternatively, put on a playlist and begin creating, drawing inspiration from the music unplanned. Note how your style changes with the music - or if it doesn’t. Keep a record of your playlist with the piece.
Pick a word, any word, and draw it. Depict a still life or scene, practice calligraphy or graffiti art, or show us how the word makes you feel.
Express, draw, depict, or literally convey an emotion. Use any style and method necessary to get the feeling across.
Write a number, small or large, anywhere on the page. Once you have written the number, create a picture around the number and incorporate it in some way. Highlight it or hide it, the number can’t be crossed out or colored over. Get creative when integrating those lines into your piece.
Be it a castle in the sky, an underwater city, a future space station, or a home under the earth, depict a fictional place. Design your own castle or show us a place from your dreams.
Draw a figure (human, nude) from reference.
Draw something unbearably adorable. A baby animal usually works. Play up cute the best you can. You want people to squeal when they look at this!
Draw something unbearably horrible. Alternatively, Depict a phobia, literally or abstractly.
Show us your favorite season or form of weather. Do you enjoy the geometry of snowflakes, the colors of autumn, the wet days of spring, or the foggy streets of the city? Perhaps you’re more of the winter mountain type, or maybe the beach and boardwalk dweller. Create it!
Design a greeting card. Birthday, holiday, seasonal, congratulatory, apologetic are some options. Alternatively, design a post card for a city. Get humorous and highlight the quirks of your hometown or combine everything you’ve always wanted to see somewhere far away.
Breathe life into an inanimate object, a la Brave Little Toaster and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
What piece of anatomy do you struggle with the most? Hands? Feet? Shoulders? Noses? Hair? Now is the time to tackle the struggle. Draw the part three different times in three different poses, using as many references as you need to complete the drawings. Do a quick motion filled expressive one to get the hang of how the body part is naturally, then get technical.
Draw a character or depict a scene from a fictional tale , but change what culture they come from. Perhaps Ariel was a South American mermaid who had a hoard of turquoise and gold from her Atlantic exploits in an air pocket cave somewhere in the Florida Keys. Maybe Rapunzel is really from India, her tower painted by the man who wished to one day free her- the only one for she let down her beautiful hair. Or do you think Cinderella could have been a Viking girl who had but one chance to visit the famed Winter Solstice festival at a great Ice Castle under the Northern Lights?
Bend yourself - in either gender or species. What would you be like as the opposite gender-what shoes would you wear and how would you do your hair? What would you wear as a mermaid? How would you do your tail if you were a centaur? Perhaps you were a cat, ever think about that? Would you have boots or stripes?
Draw your surroundings, or a part of a room you are in. Pay attention to detail and proportion.
Pick an artist. A few favorites are Monet, Salvador Dali, Picasso, Michelangelo, DeGas, and Miyazaki. Design and create a piece either inspired by them or in their style.
Design a tattoo. Old school sailor type or the type with lots of shading? You decide!
Create and depict a special ability. Create a superhero or make fan art of your favorite. Think up an age old Sorceress or Witch, or perhaps depict Gandalf in some fan art. Everyone always loves Elsa and Maleficent! Feel free to draw yourself, answering the question “If I could have one superpower or special ability, what would it be?” Another fun spin on this challenge is to draw a “useless” superpower, highlighting it’s uselessness or it’s potential.
Create a proper still life. Take your time. Use your skills. Assemble something interesting for you to draw, or challenge yourself. It can be a large or small set, your options are as limitless as reality.
Last, self portrait in any style.
