((Update -  I’m sobbing, I got so much help from people already and it’s just, I’m humbled. Thank you to @will-stab-for-chocolate @ksclaw @hannawolfcross and to my friend LevAnomaly from Twitch for all the support you’ve given me already, I have some of the best friends in the world, I swear

Of course, life wants to kick me some more while I’m down.

I managed to get that grocery delivery paid for, but it never arrived. They’re refunding me, but it’ll take a week for the funds to clear back into my account, and meanwhile I need to wait another day to get groceries and pay a higher delivery cost for delivering on a weekend. So the remainder I was squirreling away for next month’s groceries is going on getting to eat today and buying this month’s groceries instead, so I could still really use some help.

Anything you can do,  I’m incredibly grateful for. If you want to get something back, my friend @freckledloudmouth is doing pay-what-you-want sketch commissions here, @hannawolfcross is doing floor-plan designs and modelling here, and I’m willing to discuss writing commissions.

The door opens on its own, promptly on the first knock - this is Chalenna’s sanctum, and Jim is in the know, standing up and answering the door in person is for people who don’t have total control. At least the kitchen is pretty immediately visible from the door - which closes neatly behind Jim when he enters.

"Please, come in." A wave of the hand to an empty seat, that sets the kettle to floating on over. Tea leaves, sugar, honey, milk, spoons - everything necessary for good tea is set on the table, whereever there’s room.

"I’m sorry for the mess, but I can’t emphasise enough how hectic things have been. I still feel like an idiot for forgetting about you."

Jim steps through the doorway without the slightest pause, eyes flitting ‘round to take in as much of the scene as possible before landing on the kitchen. Moving in, he tucks the folder down onto an open spot and seats himself easily.

"Of course," he allows, offering an understanding smile. "and not to worry—I didn’t forget you.” Chalenna knows (or can extrapolate, presumably) enough about him that hopefully both the possibly non-optimal and the probable optimal (humour laced) implications of the sentence are clear, and Jim’s grin is just the tiniest bit like a shark’s: not because he has any intentions of being a threat or even anything close to resembling one, simply because it is habit. Mere humans do not get to Jim’s position without a good many such habits. 

An appreciative looks is leveled towards the tea, as he’s probably had just too much coffee in the past few hours of deliberate calculations, and Jim’s fingers tap the manila folder almost absently (yet another habit left over from what had once been his most ambitious job, one he plans on breaking but has not gotten around to yet.)

"Shall we to business, or should you prefer pleasantries first, my dear."

It’s not quite a question, but then—he is not quite the sort accustomed to questioning.

"Well, at least one of us is paying attention to things that matter." She's smiling, appreciative and amused.

Which one she's referring to is deliberately vague.

"I see no reason to waste our time. Besides, interesting business is a pleasure all its own, no? Such as this exponential increase opportunity you've mentioned." Files and folders are consolidated, marked and separated, to make some space for whatever Jim's brought. "I've heard of procedures that can induce magical talent, but they tend to be rather unreliable, so I hear - and I’m leery of wasting resources on outside chances, even in bulks large enough to produce predictable results.”
