10 rookie mistakes that a tee designer must avoid
Having a crazy design idea in your head is great, but physically getting it to look good on a tee is a completely different beast. Here is the list of 10 rookie mistakes that a lot of tee designers commit. This makes them frown upon their own design. Know how to avoid these mistakes and create a great tee!
Designing in haste
When you design without brain storming the concept or idea in detail, you end up creating a design that won’t at all make you feel proud. Like any other big creative project, you should lay an outline of how your design will look like. Take the time to have some craftsmanship in your work.
Putting up something without any trial-and-error
Creativity without trial-and-error is like a ship without an anchor. When it comes to designing a super cool tee, there’s a lot of testing it requires. The minute you come up with a design, don’t rush to submit the design. You might have to do certain iterations and you will end up wasting a lot of time and effort.
No right color combination
Use of bad contrast in colors will only leave you in dismay, making your life colorless. Without color, your tee might as well be blank. If you really want to make heads turn, use bright colors in contrast with darker tones.
Adding extra unnecessary elements
Did you just randomly add up extra elements to make your creative look a bit more happening? Random elements like squares or rectangles used as background is a sign of a lazy designer. This one conveys only one message to the world, “Hey, I needed something behind this design and now I couldn’t think of what to use, I’ll just throw a gigantic shape or element back there.” The simpler the design the better it looks.
Non-supportive text fonts
What do you do when you happen to use the font that isn’t supported? Edit your texts and change them to outlines so that they become universal images that won’t have incompatibility problems. Even if you aren’t a fontophile, you should know which ones to avoid: Comic Sans, Bradley Hand, Brush Script, Papyrus, Courier, Algerian, Hobo, Mistral, Curlz MT, Kristen ITC, Vivaldi, Viner Hand ITC, & Souvenir.
Use of the unpopular
People don’t connect to the things that aren’t quite popular. Use graphics that are universally appealing..something that’s pop culture. Only then will you be able to create iconic designs that would leave a mark.
Bad humour
We all love humour, don’t we? If you can cleverly play with humor and wit into your graphic tee designs, you might have a winner on your hands. Good humor can help you get all the eyeballs at your designs, but bad humor will keep your buyers at bay.
No spell-check
Wrong spellings or typos are the biggest turn off. Make sure everything’s spelled properly.
No whitespace
Give some room for your design elements to breath. A design with no white space makes it look hideous. Make whitespace your best buddy while designing!
Lack of good conceptualization
You might be designing, but the wearers should be able to relate to it and like it. While, conceptualization you need to think about the concepts from both the perspectives.
Designing a tee surely is not an easy task! But if you avoid these rookie mistakes, you will get through smoothly on your creative journey.
