Getting Down off a High Horse: Fussing Over the Treatment of Theory While Ignoring Trauma
So many interesting & informed people feel called to defend theory, of all things, against its inexact representation in this New Yorker article. I read this mainstream magazine piece less as calling on bits & slivers of undergraduate theory education for part of its framing and more as a story of youthful exposure to the intoxicants of power, the ensuing discovery of intimate adult and…

Teaching English Composition Under the AI Cloud
Teaching English Composition Under the AI Cloud
Dear Fellow English Teacher: We can start teaching the college composition course less based on procedural knowledge (skills) and more on declarative knowledge (knowing about). That will, radically, involve us in more lectures, objective exams, and maybe one synthesis paper at the end of the semester to demonstrate what students have learned. Perhaps more (very lightly assessed) journaling and…

What Will Be Left after the Purge? — ACADEME BLOG BY EVA-MARIA SWIDLER I wrote “The Purge of Higher Education,” which appears in the winter 2020 issue of Academe, this past fall while at the start of a year-long furlough from a financially troubled, unconventional liberal arts college.
Watching X-Files movies: Fight the Future and I Want To Believe this morning. Also, thinking of Conspiracy-X Role Playing Game as well… Maybe, just maybe I will script an adventure or two for that game.
Interview with Sylvia Wynter, 1987
Interview with Sylvia Wynter, 1987
Evidently, the energetic, charismatic, and incandescent David Pickell, Durham cigarette in one hand and a bottle of Guinness on the desk, editor of the then Berkeley Graduatenews magazine, kept no tabs or guardianship on his 1980s graduate student publication. By that I mean he didn’t ensure its place in the archive that is the UC-Berkeley library. A researcher at St. John’s, Anthony Bayani…

Brexit: The Naked Truth (Dr Victoria Bateman, Cambridge, 2019) by Victoria Bateman
Brexit: The Naked Truth (Dr Victoria Bateman, Cambridge, 2019) from Victoria Bateman on Vimeo.
In this one-off performance at the Cambridge Junction theatre in January 2019, on the eve of the Parliamentary vote on Britain's exit from the European Union, Dr. Victoria Bateman argues that Britain has sold itself the emperor's new clothes. She explores how Brexit leaves the British economy exposed, how it has uncovered and fuelled dangerous anti-immigration sentiments, and how it has laid bare the failures of past policy - failures that mean that too many people believe they have nothing to lose from Brexit simply because they have nothing at all. Victoria concludes with a warning: that Britain is changing direction, away from travelling the road that leads to a free and open society to instead travel a path that is nationalistic and unwelcoming. In the dark times ahead, we must all keep on making the case for freedom - a freedom that goes beyond the individual nation state and that allows each and every one of us to make the most of our lives no matter where we are born. Brexit leaves Britain naked. Filmed by oggitomic.com

The Fundamental and Oft Overlooked Difference Between State Socialism (Communism) and Libertarian Socialism
The Fundamental and Oft Overlooked Difference Between State Socialism (Communism) and Libertarian Socialism
Debates about socialism, communism, and capitalism are often marked by rhetoric, propaganda, regurgitation of propaganda, and plain misunderstanding of what these terms mean, especially in America.… Source: The Fundamental and Oft Overlooked Difference Between State Socialism (Communism) and Libertarian Socialism
