New Beginning
This blog has been re-vamped (no pun intended), focusing on V:tM, WoD and a slow reveal of my OC, Jacyntha "Syn" Salda - a Neonate Ecstatic of the Serpents of the Light in the Sabbat.
(I lean more towards V20 and 3rd edition as I've only played rpg campaigns based on those editions, and I revel in having Serpentis as a distinct discipline).

Day one of VTM Fangfest!! Thank you @fuckyeahlabynight for hosting it. So excited to do it again this year! Year four, omg! Carmichael is the lead of @thesixthplaneteer's Carmichael Chronicles, which follows a Toreador Noire Detective as he attempts to solve the puzzle of the intricate workings of Tacoma, Washington... What lies beneath those misty streets....
This yearâs prompt theme is TV Tropes! Specifically, there are all tropes that have been featured in LA by Night, NY by Night, or Project Ghostlight.
This is a super low-key fandom event fuckyeahlabynight hosts each year. The point is to have fun and make something creative to fill the prompts.
Each day, starting on June 20 and finishing on June 30, post whatever fan work you've made inspired by the TV Tropes prompt (eg. art, fic, gifs, poetry, music playlists, mood boards, whatever). I am giving you several weeks heads up to aid your creative process. You do not need to focus on LA by Night, NY by Night, or Project Ghostlight. Feel free to use your vampire OCs if it pleases you to do so!
When you post your creations, please include the hashtag #fangfest26 so they can all be collected here. If you can't think of anything for a particular prompt, or are otherwise unable to finish, it's perfectly fine to skip it. It's also fine to post your creations late. So long as you use the hashtag and I'm able to find it, it will be reblogged here regardless.
As always, those who are not taking part in making fan works are encouraged to like, comment on, give kudos, and share their favourites! Part of the fun is seeing what everyone else has made. Collaboration is also encouraged, so reach out to your fellow Kindred and see what you can come up with!
More info on each of the prompts will be below the cut, as quoted from the TV Tropes website. See you in June!
Catchphrase
âAn expression used by a character or group numerous times in a work. Merely uttering this phrase in the office will clue others in to the character(s) you're referring to.Â
Eg. âThe Undisputed Baron of the Valleyâ or âVictor, my boy!â
It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time
âSomeone does something that puts them, or the people around them in a bad or unpleasant situation. Hindsight reveals that although they had good intentions, their actions were not in their best interests. If questioned about why they did it, they'll often respond with the reason for everything that has ever been done by anyone at any time and any place: âIt seemed like a good idea at the time!ââ
A common trope for badly planned adventures.
Even Evil Has Loved Ones
âBeing evil doesn't always mean hatred and negativity 24/7. Even evil characters (and real people) can find someone to love. Often, that love is twisted, a cause for villainy, or an act, but sometimes a work can show an evil character's love is genuine and deep. This serves to humanize the character, to give the hero doubts about fighting them, or to provide a weakness for the hero to exploit. At an extreme end, it can provoke Mama Bear or Papa Wolf reactions if they are threatened (or turning into a Tragic Monster at worst), or prompt the loved ones to Avenge The Villain. It also marks the villain as hypocritical and shows their twisted worldview by treating everyone else as insects but excluding the few ones they have feelings of affection for. Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas, Villainous Parental Instinct, and Unholy Matrimony are subtropes.â
Eg. Vennevar Thomas and Suzanne Rochelle
Cool Shades
âWearing dark glasses or mirrorshades is long-standing visual shorthand for badassitude. The act of putting them on means that it's time to kick ass, take names or do both. The act of taking them off is a sign that somebody's about to get scrutinised by the badass, usually just prior to an asskicking.â
Eg: Strauss, Nelli G, or Chaz.
Accidental Murder
âAccidental Murder occurs when a situation that wasn't intended to be lethal ends with the death of someone anyway. Occasionally, this happens because a fight just goes too far (Bob and Alice start fighting, and the fight gets more heated than anyone expects, and Alice ends up braining Bob with a heavy object or accidentally knocking him onto something sharp... and she doesn't realize he's dead until it's over). Other times, this happens when innocent bystanders are caught up in someone else's fight and are dead before anyone else realizes they are there (Bob and Alice are fighting; Carol, a friend to both, tries to break it up and gets accidentally shot while Bob and Alice are wrestling for a gun). And sometimes there's no fighting involved at all; the person who dies is killed because the unintentional killer does something stupid.
Either way, it's simply bad luck for the dead guy, and for his killer. No one was meant to die, but someone died anyway.â
A common trope for vampire stories, either due to violence or feeding.
I Hate You, Vampire Dad
A vampire embraces another as an act of love, but the new vampire hates their sire post-embrace, and blames them for everything terrible that has happened to them since. This can happen even if the young vampire wants to be embraced, and then regrets it later. It more often happens if the young vampire was embraced to save them from the True Death.
âMaybe the change made the loved one (new vampire) into someone, or some thing that the sire no longer recognizes or loves. Maybe the loved one can't handle the stress of being a vampire, or once fully immersed in the life realizes their sire lied about not being Blessed with Suck, and if the loved one is a biological child of theirs, they'll never grow up.âÂ
Eg. Annabelle and Carver
Destination Defenestration
âA sufficiently badass character punches, throws, or in any other way applies the force necessary in order to toss someone else through a window.â
Eg. Rey in NY by Night
We ARE Struggling Together
âThe government is evil, decadent, corrupt, or all three and it's time for a revolution. Only one thing stands in the way: your fellow revolutionaries. All of you can agree on only one thing: The government must go. Beyond that, you and your fellow revolutionaries couldn't decide on pizza toppings, let alone the shape of the world to come (or how to get it there). This can lead to squabbling that prevents any coordinated action from taking place...or it can escalate to the point where the different revolutionary factions are spending as much time and energy shooting at each other as they are shooting at the ones in power.â
A common downfall for Anarch coteries, but can also happen to Camarilla ones too, such as in NY by Night.
Elaborate Underground Base
To maintain Plausible Deniability and hide from magical TV Spy Satellites, any sufficiently powerful or advanced covert organization of heroes, villains, conspirators, or military personnel needs an Elaborate Underground Base to use as their headquarters... And it's a good location for a Supervillain Lair.â
Any large, underground vampire haven. Consider, from LA by Night, the Nosferatu Warrens or the Labyrinth.
Screw the Rules, Iâm Beautiful!
âA conventionally attractive character gets away with morally ambiguous things, despite how similar actions usually get questioned when committed by characters that are considered ugly. The attractive character is almost always forgiven or doesnât even get called out for their questionable choices from within the plot. Sometimes, their actions even get painted in a good light, and the plot rewards them for them. Meanwhile, the ugly character gets shamed and villainized for doing similar things.â
Not just for Toreador! Any character with the âBeautifulâ or âStunningâ advantage will likely use this trope.
Hopes and Fears for V6 #6
I hope we get: A fixed Sabbat. Please, please, please fix the Sabbat. The version we got in V5 was unplayable, and even if it was playable you wouldn't want to. No paths of enlightenment, they apparently don't care about Clan now (???), and it just wasn't fun. I want the Sabbat back. I'm really hoping that White Wolf realizes that a lot of us consider the Sabbat our favorite faction, and just because it doesn't lean heavily into that "personal horror" aspect the writers really fetishize doesn't mean it's an irrelevant part of the game experience. I hope we get Sabbat characters that have interesting philosophies on vampirism, I hope we get the dark spirituality that made the Sabbat what they are. I hope we get Paths of Enlightenment back for playing Sabbat characters, and I hope we get back the interesting clan identities with the Antitribu. I want Toreador Antitribu performing flesh art with Vicissitude, I want Serpents of the Light revolting against Set's tyranny, I want free Panders reveling in the status that they won as Caitiffs and never could have in the Camarilla. Give me back scheming Lasombra and the Courts of Blood, you can keep the Antitribu in the Camarilla but let us have back the dark aristocracy of the Sabbat. Give us ritae! Let us perform vaulderies and fire dances and games of instinct with our groups! These things are tailor made for VtM play, why did you take them from us?
What I think we'll actually get: I think we'll get a playable Sabbat but they'll get cold feet about it and try to keep a lot of the hideously bad Sabbat lore from V5, like them forsaking Clan identities, the Lasombra leaving the Sect to go beg the Camarilla for mercy, abandoning all their strongholds to go run off to fight the Gehenna War, and etc. We might actually get some Paths of Enlightenment but they'll be written badly like they were in V20 and Revised and pigeonhole you into playing a baby eating monster and we'll get some snide sidebars in the book about how playing a Sabbat character makes you inherently evil and monstrous and want to kill everyone you see. We'll probably get some good Sabbat Loresheets at least. Maybe Black Hand membership will be a Loresheet, since it basically functioned as a proto-Loresheet in V20 anyhow. We'll probably get a Ritae Loresheet, maybe even get some Loresheets for the various factions like the Loyalists, Orthodox, Ultra-Conservatives, and etc, though that might be a pipe dream. We'll probably at least get the Vaulderie back, I hope. I think they'll throw Sabbat players a few bones at least but it'll be on homebrewers to hack the Sect into something playable since White Wolf has always regarded the Sabbat with open, barely-restrained contempt.
I didn't realize that the backdrop of Montreal by Night was against the 2nd Ed. and Revised mechanics. My introduction to V:tM began with V20 and later was introduced to 3rd Ed. for a brief chronicle. I'll need to look into 1st, 2nd. Ed. and Revised.
The upcoming V:tM Eternal Whispers with a nod to the Montreal Sabbat using V5 mechanics, won't be much, in retrospect. Will there be an antitribu clan to choose from during character creation? Probably not.
