Reading “queer love” feels so strange. It means “weird love”. What is weird about me being in love with a lesbian ? What is weird about the love I feel for her ? What is weird about my feelings ? What is weird about me thinking of her ? What is weird about being a lesbian ? I’m pissed off. I just wanted to read poems by lesbians and I had to read “queer love” when It should be “gay love”, “lesbian love”. Love is not queer. Lesbian love is not queer. It’s beautiful, dreamy and soft. There is nothing strange with what I feel and how I feel it. Nothing is queerer than people telling us that our love is a mistake when they don’t know the intensity and the softness of our feelings.

The thing is…we’ve been actively encouraged to use less offensive, more humanising and more technical terminology when referring to other ostracised groups. We, as we should, say disabled not ‘handicapped’, we say black people not ‘coloureds’. Even if people of those groups reclaimed and used those kinds of historically derogatory terms to refer to themselves, it was understood that it was not to be used by outsiders. People understand this…Except apparently when it comes to gay people. Instead we’re encouraged to use the words that were and are slurs to refer to them instead. If anything we’re being discouraged from using technical terms like homosexual and same sex attracted. Frankly it’s a strange development…
