Hou Hai lake, Beijing
Dear luminous internet,
I took this photo one evening in Beijing during a wonderful trip with an intricate lead up.
I'm hardly the first to be motivated this way, but the truth is that I had an incredible, utterly unreal love affair. We both implicitly knew the relationship to be transient despite its length, and with that came an incredible freedom to enjoy the moments for themselves. I thought of myself as a nomad while we wandered together, sometimes sleeping in cars, ardently intertwining in the quiet corners of grand old museums. (We were once caught, but his status as a beloved Canadian granted us merely an angry request to leave instead of a police report.) I enjoyed him so entirely and felt every second a blessing, always knowing that eventually he would have to leave me for China, and that I could not go with him. When I woke, my sense of loss over the relationship I’d dreamt was so extreme I wept. The passage of time in the dreaming and waking worlds are so disconnected that I'd known nearly a lifetime with this man in a single night.
My new desire to travel to China seemed sudden and unexplained. It would take me well over a year to stumble upon the realisation that the origin of my desire was a dream. At the time, I had no means to take such an expensive trip, so I contented myself to daydreaming and looking through photographic journals of Chinese life.
Two weeks later, I received a call from my aunt. We had been distant for many years due to tensions elsewhere in the family, but now she was calling me with an unexpected and amazing invitation: would I like to accompany her to China? I have deeply fond memories of summertimes in my childhood spent with her and my uncle. This trip was one that my then recently deceased uncle had intended to take himself, and after his death my aunt had chosen to take the trip in his place. I was grateful for the offer to accompany her.
I am even more grateful for the experience itself, which not only strengthened my bond to a beloved aunt, but unexpectedly strengthened the connection to the memory of a beloved and truly kind-hearted uncle. Events due to political unrest in China had forced a separation of my uncle from his own family during his childhood, and he was already a grown man when he saw them again. My short time in China allowed me to meet some of his siblings who left me surprised and moved by their warm welcome and the realisation of how much they already knew of me.
All relationships are transient, just as we are always moving. You cannot stop death any more than you can stop from exiting a dream upon waking. Perhaps we need that knowledge of fragility and constant change in order to appreciate and love.
My wish for you this week, and every week to come, is that you love and feel loved.

image by Veronika von Volkova, model Katelan V. Foisy
Dear lovely internet,
This image of the brilliant and beautiful Katelan V. Foisy is based on a photo I made the first time we ever met in person.
I partially layered in a semi-transparent and shifted duplicate of the photo, then I created a layer out of fibres that I warped so they’d align with and echo different contours present in the photograph. I like the way it reminds me of ripples in water and suggests fluid movement.
Swoosh.
I hope you are having a day full of pleasurable calm.

The divine Kai Irina Hahn in a Manhattan club that doesn’t exist.
Dear magical internet,
Kai Irina Hahn is the Diva of The Sedona Effect, and they’ve just released their video for Gloomy Sunday, which you should absolutely indulge in. (You can find The Sedona Effect on bandcamp as well.) Kai is a fascinating musician, performer and artist, and absolutely someone I need to work with again.
This particular image is made up of 28 layers. I took many photos of Kai in a darkly lit secret club which had a couple strands of leaves lit from behind with small lights. I layered in those leaves over and over, moving them along the wall and then down over the floors. At home, I lit incense and photographed the smoke as it drifted in front of my lamp so I could extract it and layer that in as well. There were already lights and branches behind Kai, so I just slightly increased their numbers and extended their range while removing other kinds of clutter. Despite all of these modifications and additional layers, the Kai parts of the image are all 100% Kai.
I hope you are all having brilliant weekends.

Dear delightful internet,
I took this self portrait in the same Manhattan hotel mentioned in this earlier post. I enjoyed how well suited these images were to manipulations that replicate and repeat simple lines and details from the original photograph.
A black and white version of this photograph appeared in the print edition of Weaponizer Magazine #1. (You can find the archives for the Weaponizer online edition here.) The project’s multitalented founder, Bram E. Gieben, is a writer, musician, multi-platform artist, poet, journalist, and 2015 Scottish Slam Champion. Watch his latest video, Howl, on youtube.
This image has also had the honour of being associated with The New Libertines - an event series created by the wonderful Dan Holloway that champions daring and extraordinary self-published work: “light in dark corners, desire in the face of boredom, despair hidden beneath the underskirts of affluence”.
Looking at these images reminds me of ideas I have for extending the series, so perhaps there will be more to come some time in the future.

Self portrait in a Manhattan hotel
Dear beautiful internet,
I had the pleasure of staying in a boutique hotel in New York right near Central Park. My room featured a window, easily seen from the bed, with curtains on both sides of the glass. Pushing the curtains aside granted a view into part of the ensuite’s shower (or, I suppose, a view of the bed from the shower).
Having the camera in a different room than me was managed by using the remote to trigger the timer and repeatedly exiting the shower, sticking my arm out the ensuite door, pressing a button and quickly returning to the window (all while in fetish boots with a very steep arch). Despite that reality, I find this image makes me think of a more languorous type of movement.
I hope your weekends have been full of delight.

From the Grime Angels series
Dear lovely internet,
You can read in the previous post about this series being the result of me finding a grimy old cabinet door. I enjoyed these images for how well they lent themselves to strong colour filtering. These are all self-portraits, and are testaments to the transformation a good wig and some dark eye make up can bring.

From the Grime Angels series
Dear lovely internet,
The Grime Angels series is the result of me finding a grimy old cabinet door. I set it up in my living room, and shot through the various smudges and partial hand prints and bits of dirt. I’m very fond of the results, some of which can be found in the wonderful Dan Holloway’s Skin Book, which you can download here. Dan is extraordinary, and I am delighted each time I have the privilege of seeing my images paired with his work.
