Shadowpool's Story - Warrior cats fancomic
Here's a cover for my comic! I've been working on this comic since the beginning of 2021. All the support I get on this comic means a lot to me. (:

sure, you can joke all you want that they're just cats, but at the end of the day, they aren't "just cats". they're anthropomorphized, with organized societies and religions, but this isn't a story about "documenting" these sophisticated cats and their behaviors. the series isn't really about cats; the series uses cats as a vessel for conveying the authors' personal beliefs. the series isn't about cats. the series is about the godless heathen, the strange native, or the savage outsider. they're about the despicable mother, the righteous man, and the omniscient god. they're not "just cats" if they're being used to uphold harmful and damaging beliefs about certain types of people.
like lizardstripe is not "just a cat". she's a vessel for this message that a woman not wanting children should be demonized and punished for having such feelings, and that all women will want children eventually. it's in their nature! they're programmed to feel so!
squirrelflight and leafpool are used to convey that lying to your husband, even if god told you to do so, is a crime worse than death that you can commit. it doesn't matter if your god asked you to do so, and that three children heralded to save your society were at risk of death; you lied to your husband, and you deserve to suffer for the rest of your life.
splashtail and curlfeather aren't just cats if they're being used to bash atheists. they're more than cats if the takeaway of their story is that rejecting god in some way is a despicable, unthinkable act.
they're not "just cats" if the authors are out here using the fucking nuremburg defense for some characters, and the narrative is treating this like it's an honorable, valid thing to say!
scourge and darktail and slash and one eye and sol aren't just villains; they're utilized to communicate a message that outsiders are inherently hostile and evil, and will do anything in their power to destroy your society.
brokenstar and tigerstar are used to claim that some people are just "born evil", and other people are "born good"; that people are not actually capable of great moral change. they're either fundamentally evil, or simply led astray from the path of good.
so tell me again; are they really just cats?
Natalie Riess has shared a cut scene from TPB GN 2. It is the scene from the books of Cloudkit going out hunting with Fernkit and Ashkit.
like yeah i'm sure this wasn't at all how the writers intended the situation to be read but when you set it next to things like
-yellowfang lying to squirrelflight about being barren, which demonstrates that starclan is not above lying to make sure all goes as planned
-the extremely flimsy logic spottedleaf uses to justify telling leafpool it's ok to elope with crowfeather ("i had to be intentionally vague and purposefully mislead you because only then would you realize how important to you your clan was")
-how starclan let cinderpelt know that she was going to die soon for no apparent reason with the stress of her impending death implicitly being part of why she lashed out at leafpool, which made leafpool want to leave thunderclan even more
-but did not tell leafpool that cinderpelt was going to die which would probably have had a large baring on if she decided to stay or not
-the way spottedleaf just immediately drops the "warm and unconditionally caring godmummy" front and starts admonishing leafpool and calling her stupid for doing exactly what spottedleaf gave her permission to do as soon as the existence of the special prophecy babies ends up being ensured
it all just lends a loooot of credence to the reading of spottedleaf deliberately stringing leafpool along in such a way that would allow the prophecy to come to fruition and then discarding her the moment she was no longer needed!

I know I’ve said this millions of times already but Scourge is the biggest victim of characters who are watered down way too much by fans to the point where his actual fantastic writing is lost to the tsunami of boring and unoriginal jokes/oversimplifications of his arc
He was not just “Beaten up as a kid”, he was nearly murdered in an act of targeted xenophobia and would have died had one of the soldiers -who did nothing up until the last moment- never spoke out to tell TigerPaw to let him go
He was not just “Picked on by his siblings and it made him edgy”, he was being relentlessly mocked by them, to the point where it isn’t even average sibling bickering/fighting but now something that traumatized him and actively fed into why he never went back home after being attacked (“Unwanted kittens get thrown into the river”)
He was not just “An edgy teenager who rallied a bunch of emos”, he was a hurting child who had nobody to help him and managed to secure small glimmers of help from other cats who he was lucky to have met during his circumstances at the time (The old stray giving this hungry kitten food, the strays seeing the dog tooth in his collar Right After he gets it, etc).
Scourge built a community, a group of cats who he could watch over and help. He’s a victim of the writer’s incompetence, he’s an even bigger victim of the fans watering him down through one-off jokes that have been echoed for years now
— "You pretend to flinch. You know I couldn't have done it without you."
This guy want to kill all the Sky clan cats.

These gif sets are so fun to make, really pleased with how this project turned out; it's sort of a sequel/same universe and concept to my TBC one. It's fun to compare them, I think I've improved a lot in terms of editing/tweeting since I made it.
Might do another post showing off the backgrounds, as they're largely covered in the final, rip.
