“You’re not drinking alone on your birthday, are you?” The professor has seemingly appeared out of thin air, leaning against the bar and staring at his student with eyebrows raised. “I can only think the rest of your colleagues haven’t shown up to your party yet. Here, let me buy you a drink.”

THE ROOM FELT HEAVY. typically flynn didn't make a habit of drinking on his own. he'd even brag that he never really had the option to. with a bustling campus and a charming smile he found that it wasn't very difficult to round up a couple of drinking buddies. but the campus was starting to naturally thin out as the semester came to a close. plus he wasn't giving his usual happy to receive company energy. he'd been compared to a golden retriever in that respect a time or two.

he knew the voice without needing to turn around. he gave a one shoulder shrug before lifting the drink back to his lips. part of him wonders how the bloody hell the professor found out his actual birthday. it wasn't as if the identification he carried on him was real or accurate. but he stopped questioning wendell a long while ago.

plus he'd be lying if he said it didn't feel nice for someone else to acknowledge his birthday. it had been years since he celebrated with another person. and he didn't want to be thinking of his time with the baron. ❝ no party this year. i think my fellow colleagues are all trying to cram as much information into their heads as quickly as possible or have the itch to get up and go somewhere sunnier for the season. i won't say no to a free drink. ❞

eugene's official birthday is may 24th. he is four months old when he is left at the door of the orphanage. miss clare had to make a guess on his birthday but was a couple weeks off.

growing up at the orphanage his birthday was often either overlooked or was mixed up with one of the other boys. this made eugene devalue the day. he doesn't see the point in celebrating a day that feels fake to him

he will lie about his birthday. often. he will often pick a day a couple months away. far enough away that he won't still be around to celebrate it. but not close enough in the past that anyone will feel the need to retroactively celebrate it.

there have been several times where he claimed his birthday was the same as someone else's to use it as a way to force a bond with said person as 'birthday twins'

adira is the one who reveals to him when his birthday actually is. they drop this knowledge as an offhanded comment. he spirals for a couple days.

in modern verses eugene does know his birthday since it is written on a sheet of paper wrapped up in his blanket. he still grows up with it being forgotten or mixed up with the other boys.

he also hates his birthday because it is a reminder that he is getting older. in his mind he doesn't expect to ever reach the age of 30. he fully expects for his life to catch up with him and for a heist to go south.

once he settles down and creates a life for himself that he actually is proud of, he still struggles for a couple years to get used to celebrating the day

zafiya cradles something in her hands. it’s a paper-wrapped bundle, a little golden chain inside, under a warm chocolate pastry. ‘ happy birthday, ’ she offers, smile apologetic already.

HE EXPECTS HER TO BE INJURED with the way she's cradling something in her hands. his mind instantly jumped to the worst. he found that was a safe assumption when it comes to the barrel. concern melts into confusion before shifting into recognition only to go back to confusion yet again. he couldn't even remember ever bringing up his birthday. he racks his brain to try to recall when he'd mentioned it. if anything he was so used to telling people a fake day that the fact she's celebrating on the actual day catches him off guard.

❝ what? please tell me you at least stole whatever you have wrapped up and didn't actually spend money for my birthday. ❞ he attempts to shift the attention away from his birthday as he accepts the gift and pastry. ❝ why do you seem two seconds away from apologizing? should i be concerned about what's wrapped up? ❞

A WHOLE TWO MINUTES PASS. and flynn doesn't remove his eyes from the phone. logically he knows that he probably shouldn't have been a dick and should have just called. he hates this feeling in the pit of his stomach. if he was being honest with himself ( which he'd rather not be at the moment ) he is worried about stefan. the calm cool and collected side that kept him alive this long tells him to wait longer. eventually stefan will reply. or maybe he won't. but that wasn't his problem right? right?
