tbh, sizhui’s name in chinese isn’t as corny and explicitly romantic as “longing” in english, “si” “思" basically just means missing you, thinking about you.

why does no one talk about the courtesy name WWX gave Jin Ling? 如蘭 Ru Lan, WWX literally argued with JC over the character “Lan” because JC didn’t like it sounds the same as the “Lan” of Gusu Lan Sect lol

It took some digging into the Chinese fandom but here is what I found out. The name Sizhui (思追) actually comes from this line:

思君不可追，念君何时归

I couldn’t find the exact source but a translation would be “I think of a man that cannot be chased, when will the man I yearn for return”. (Hanguang-Jun, can you be any more subtle?)

EDIT: It seems that the line above is actually fanon… A less poetic explanation is that the characters are simply from:

- 思念 (sīniàn) to think of, to long for, to miss, to cherish the memory of

- 追忆 (zhuīyì) to recollect, to recall, to look back

Jin Ling’s courtesy name Rulan (如兰) comes from Confucius:

君子如兰，空谷幽香

Literally it is something like “A man’s noble character is like an orchid, the air in the valley is fragrant”. Meaning that morality should be upheld even under duress. I think.
