Upp 2.4 really reinforced a lot of ideas I’ve had about Williams character for a while and it makes me sooo happy…

Lui getting angry at William because he’s acting so stupid and playful amongst all the terrifying things. William constantly edging away from direct danger yet still complaining when it has to be his turn. William making jokes and puns at such a horrible time because he copes with it all in a way that just Isn’t Helpful to everyone else.

He’s not malicious about it, he’s just inherently playful (wisp moment) and more of an aid than a tank (wisp moment).

William looking to Lui’s eyes and seeing how overconfident he feels with the grimoire… I really love how often in upp (and in pd actually) he picks up on people lying or acting oddly (even when it’s not malicious!!! Lui upp2.4 and Tide in pd1 finale!!!)… William Could have said something to him, could have done more. William could have comforted Norah and Lui and he sort of tries by attempting to lighten the mood but they just don’t land.

It really feels like William isn’t built for the story he’s in. He’s a comedic dork who never seems to fully grasp the danger he’s putting himself in despite being so afraid of it. He never takes anything seriously enough. And it annoys the other characters!!!! Lui gives him a look, Norah is clearly on her last bits of sanity and Isaac clearly disliked William’s little “why is it always me?” In the forest!!!!! William being the problem in every dynamic he’s ever been in and ever will be because he’s just Like That (wisp moment) !!!!!!!

everybody say thanks to lem in the upp server for making me develop this headcanon probably entirely on accident but. just. southern william.

will who grew up in the south until he was like four and they moved to deadwood. will whose parents decided to change their accents when moving to a more northern state, and will as a child ofc followed suit. will who in elementary school had this awful mishmash of their northern/midwestern accent and his southern one until he finally sorted out all the right ways to speak in one or the other

will who defaults to his southern accent when really stressed because he doesnt think about it. will whose family is super southern behind closed doors.

will who, as he got older, lowk hates his original accent because it does NOT match the vibe he's created for himself. would ruin his aesthetic. he has a reputation and that reputation is NOT being southern bro.

see a will who doesnt bother to focus on not sounding southern when at home and usually has some mishmash of the accents again, and sometimes forgets his friends can hear him/are right there. see also will who gets super southern when half asleep. see also all his friends teasing him playfully for it

see norah and isaac complimenting the accent, and lui just being confused as to why he'd want to change his accent (see the silliness of him saying that and then william going FULL southern. whatever he was doing before was not full southern. he is barely understandable in full southern that boy has a THICK fucking accent)

will and his mom in the hospital when he's getting attacked by dr gurgeurhg (i will never learn to spell his name. i refuse /silly) and her going full angry southern mom on him. will and calling her momma trying to get her to calm down, letting his own accent slip a bit

see the possibility of that being the first time any of his friends (Lui, because sadly the rest are not there :( ) hear him southern, and theyve got far more pressing concerns. they dont even get to make fun of him for it because of The Horrors

2.4 is the whole reason this headcanon exists and im 100% fucking INTERNALIZING IT i will never let this go. he called his mom "momma" and it broke my heart and lem called him southern and now it's canon in my mind
