I know that some British people take umbrage at Americans calling the Great British Bake Off relaxing, but it's just because GBBO is such a different kind of stressful from American baking shows.

American baking shows will be called something like "Cupcake Knife Fight", there's horror movie lighting everywhere and dramatic stings every 5 seconds. All of the contestants are shit talking each other and fist fighting over the one single deep fryer provided by production. It will show the judges all whispering to each other at their super villain table overlooking the whole kitchen, and one will be like, "Oh my god. Everyone look at Brenda right now. She's straight tanking it." And it will cut to Brenda, who is running around covered in flour and crying and also bleeding for some reason. Then you get a clip from an interview with one of the contestants, and they're like, "I really need to win this. Without this award money, I'm gonna need to close my restaurant, sell my dad, and live out of my car. AGAIN." Then the giant digital doomsday clock overhead lets out a horrid klaxon, the judges tell half of them that their cupcakes taste disgusting, and one of them gets eliminated and sent to walk down the dramatically-lit shame hallway never to be seen again.

Meanwhile GBBO is in a lovely, brightly colored tent, there are delightful and friendly hosts/jesters there to keep everyone entertained, and all of the B Roll is of like... a bumblebee going into a flower, or a lamb running in a field. And yes, there will be moments where someone will mess up their timing or something, and they'll be looking at their bake through the oven door like, "oh gosh I don't think this will rise in time!" Then they stand up to find Paul Hollywood directly behind them ominously. His creepy whitewalker eyes will glow white, and he'll say something like "the 12th of June. 2035. Drowning." And his eyes will go back to normal and he'll walk away. Then the baker gives a playful grimace to the camera and says "that didnt sound great, did it?". Cut to a sweet looking older woman sipping tea on a stool and she says "oo I do hope that Prue enjoys the taste of my sugary, sticky baps!". Then, at the end, someone gets a gold star for doing good, and the loser of the episode gets in the middle of a giant group hug. You see all of them at the end of the series at a giant carnival with their families and the post credits informs you that all of the contestants have become a Partridge Family-style traveling band and stayed friends forever.

A friend and I just finished watching the extended Sheith movie. It'd been years since I revisited VLD and these were my thoughts watching the spliced up SK version of it:

seasons1-5 sections: Ah sheith really was just fanon huh

The Black Paladins to ep 7x01: JFC this had to be intentional, there's no way you can be showcasing this level of love and devotion between these two for and not realize, if nothing else, that you've written at least one character deeply in love with the other

I think I'll always be 50/50 on what the "intent" was. I think at least half the creative directing team was supportive of the ship, and celebrated it with art of their own. The show came out during a time when any hint of LGBTQ+ characters on a kids' cartoon was a battle you were going to lose, especially male characters. The scene between Adam/Shiro is so much more carefully, obliquely written than I remembered and was visually edited so as to make it look like a common area rather than their shared apartment. The showrunners spoke about how they were instructed that Keith and Shiro weren't "allowed" to cry. Sheith was never possible, no matter who among the creative team may have wanted it.

But it's not as simple as "the times wouldn't have allowed it". Watching the Sheith movie I'm reminded of all the episodes that were cut out of the edit... and how many times it feels like scenes were cut that weren't. The show's biggest crime was never which characters ended up together but its overall writing. Important character shifts go back and forth, some things that have been enormous overarching plots for seasons are never explained or are dropped and never resumed. We never learn why Shiro was cloned. We never learn who Lotor really is or what his motivations truly are because they jump all over the place. Keith is obsessed with finding (and killing) Lotor for several seasons, but it's never explained why. Shiro and Sendak are clearly foils and Sendak would be a great manifestation of Shiro's trauma if the show spent any time on it. Characters grow, relationships change, but it's sporadic and nonlinear. I want to take a red pen to all of it, and that's ignoring the absolute disaster I remember s7&8 being that managed to unite every VLD in a perfect, beautiful moment of "wow. that sucked".

There is a lesson in there about unreasonable deadlines, industry burnout, and the fragile, careful tug of war that must be played when creatives and clients have vastly different visions of what the show will be. Animation is full of gossip (it's our way of traumabonding) and what I would give for an entire tome of a tell-all on what this show was like behind the scenes.

Anyway. It was fun revisiting something I was obsessed with for so long. Sometimes I miss the intensity of being part of a fandom with such a big show crush, and other times I'm relieved it doesn't have its claws in my anymore

I'm thinking about Keith Kogane, lightyears away from all the places he's ever called home, holding onto his father's jacket and realising it stopped smelling like him a while ago. And he has a dagger from a mother he never knew and a jacket from a father who left too, and he didn't care for the shack in the desert if the people he loved weren't in it.

Home is wherever his friends are, and he only cares for his room in the Castle as much as he cares for the trinkets left in it by the others -cool rocks and blankets and game consoles and pictures on the wall.

He holds onto a jacket that doesn't smell of anything and wonders what about him makes everyone leave, one way or another. He wonders what about him is so wrong, so ugly, so monstrous, that he isn't allowed to hold onto people he loves.
