Reblog In 5 seconds for good luck
this worked last night lets go for round two
I really need some good luck rn
I say this with the utmost compassion, but to young people applying to internships and jobs in general: please do not feel you need to disclose life-altering traumas that are not related to your ability to perform your duties in a job application. Your employer or supervisor does not need to know that you are an abuse survivor, struggle with body image, or are dealing with the psychological fallout of a school shooting. I know there is a current culture of confessional oversharing and a blurring of private and public-facing personas these days as influenced by social media, but I promise that this is not helpful and is in fact deeply unsettling as some of the first information you present to a hiring committee or potential future colleagues. Just....maybe rethink the stories you’re leading with here.
This sort of thing might make sense to go into a college application essay (at least in the US; don't know about other places), since those can be all about Who You Are As A Person and Overcoming Adversity and shit, and that could be leading young people to believe it's appropriate/expected for other types of applications as well. Job applications are very different! The college application process is Weird in many ways and is a very poor template to use for job and other kinds of applications later (jobs will also mostly not care about any of your extracurricular activities except in very rare cases where they might actually be relevant somehow. jobs will mostly not even care about your grades).
@seralicetarrant noted this as well. as someone who has done a small amount of hiring in a country where college application essays are Not A Thing, I can say that while I haven’t seen oversharing (yet), what I have seen is that recent grads tend to focus in cover letters on what the job opportunity will do for them, which I think is a related issue. because, fundamentally, what jobs are screening for is not who is the Most Deserving, but who can actually *do the specific work required*. it’s a completely different question than the one being asked in fellowship/scholarship applications.
IDK where this information needs to go in the standard educational process but it definitely needs to go somewhere.
If your cover letter for a job describes how you’ve overcome personal adversity, your application will go to the bin. If you had to take out time due to mental or physical health reasons for example, you write (at least in Germany, and to a similar extent in the UK - although in the UK people are less bothered about CVs that aren’t a straight journey from school to your current job) something in your CV like ‘break due to illness, now fully recovered’ (even if it’s under control rather than something that can be cured) to head off questions, and something similarly bland for other longish gaps between jobs. In your cover letter, you focus on what brought the job to your attention/and or what your general career plans are (first paragraph), what you bring to the job, taking the job advert - the profile of the job as well as the requirements - as your template (in the second paragraph) and what attracts you to the job and some polite words closing the letter (in the third paragraph). You do not dwell on the negative, even if it was in the past, because that will paint you as a moaner. Examples of how you’ve overcome professional (!) difficulties are reserved (in a sanitised way) for the job interview because they’d take to long to explain in a cover letter and could leave the impression that you’re slagging off your current or a previous employer if you’re offering them unprompted.
This does sound like a one-way street, and I recognise that particularly in the current stuation, it is a one-way street for most people. But the other side of the equation is the job ad, and I’m sure all of you who are looking for a job can distinguish between job adverts that give of the impression that the prospective employer really wants some good and fitting new employees and others that simply don’t give a damn. Yeah, they have stuff on what they want from you (that section tends to be longer in Germany than in the UK), but they also tell you what they offer - what kind of job you’ll do and the perks you’ll get. Your application is offering perks back.
if you need fewer than 8 hrs of sleep keep that shit to yourself. or do one better and simply lie and say that 8+ hrs of sleep is necessary for you. if you’re out here loudly bragging about ur 4 hour sleep maximum i consider you an oppressor. best case scenario is people clap for you and feel jealous. worst case scenario you signal to the capitalist dogs that we should all try to be like you. the risk is too great and the reward too little
Dear everyone who is currently working on a Thing, whatever that Thing may be,
Good luck with the Thing. You can do the Thing. You will do the Thing. You just have to do the Thing.
Best wishes,
Someone who is also doing a Thing
