In 2013 I decided to take a ten year journey in doing my own thing and telling my own stories and seeing how far i can take this. It's been 5 years now and this is the results so far. Its crazy what a couple to a few hours on the side can amount to and how much more i'll be adding to it. It’s like a little army! For this year i want to do things a little different. I like to say that making these books is the easy part and pushing them out to let people know about it is that hard part and that's what I want to focus on that this year, the hard part. I do struggle with social media/ marketing and business elements that can really help his stuff grow. Bidding farewell to 2017 with a concept piece for my picture book project for 2018; The Owls and the Lost Princess. Been on a little hiatus after the kickstarter, and a bit overworked, but after my road trip to the southwest im feeling super fresh and energized. Hit all my goals this year and got to keep diggin deeper every year with my stuff. Had an excellent time and turnout at Latino Comics Expo this weekend! Managed to sell a little bit of everything which was awesome! Overall a pretty successful show but still feel like i can push my stuff even more in term of presentation and branding. Didn't do as many portrait sketches as previous shows but that's a good thing as I was relying on them to attract people to my table and really felt my work stood on its own here. This is my last event of the year and looking forward to leveling up for next time. Thank all who dropped by! Behind the Kickstarter 05 🔴Last day tomorrow, link in bio. In this final Behind the Kickstarter i want to talk a bit about character design. I really like what I had created and design back in 09 but like the story, I felt it could be more streamlined. She's heavily inspired by characters like Darkwing Duck, Dick Tracy, The Mask and in general just the look of a detective in the 1920’s. The Main focus was on making her really bold and ready to face any challenge thrown her way and felt that the color red/orange was super fitting. She is strong willed therefore a bit stubborn so he's no stranger to getting rough up so she's fully cover because it's practical in fighting bad dudes and classy. Even though it’s a story about crime fighters taking down evil bad guys I wanted the overall tone of the story to stay on the like fun side. What better partner to have than a dachshund that can beat up people, sneak through vents and disarm bombs. I wanted to keep the overall design of the dog close to that of a real dachshund because I wanted to feel like it can be real and for that reason it does not speak like a human. Another reason for that is that i wanted them to have an unspoken bound. They may not speak the same language but they understand each other. I really want to leave the impression that this can be a real dog. Behind the Kickstarter 04 Visual Storytelling is a craft in its own, a mesh of writing and art. It's something I have been working myself up to, with my small comics and books. I hope to one day produce a memorable story that resonates with people. As with all craft and skill, the more you do it the better you get. The hardest has been splitting my focus between writing and art, when I start a project I just want to take a pencil and start drawing, but if it doesn't work on paper with just words, not even the prettiest picture can save a story. There are fundamentals to storytelling and is they are not there then it falls apart like anything. Like a sketch to set a solid foundation for a drawing or illustration; there are outline and drafts that I like to think of as been the equivalent of those things the lead into a script. Its a place where you can make changes, play around without the investment One thing I wanted to do is to really scale back what I had done and make it more manageable and simple, as I mentioned before. I imagine this being like a saturday morning cartoon, a one off episode about these character doing something without a big back story and exposition. With this new direction, I had really edited the script down and streamlined the whole thing. Behind the Kickstarter 03 Looking back I’m somewhat happy I let this project sit. I am a 3D artist by trade and my illustration and drawing skills weren’t exactly my strongest skill at that point in time. I want to show this old art because beyond the technical issues that I see now, they show growth. Being so, it was quite the ambitious project for me but I’m glad that it didn’t stop me from making something or attempting to. In the end done is better than perfect. As artists we will always improving our skills and always getting better. The initial concept revolved around a world where everybody had an animal companion, bird, lizards, to everyday animals. They for some reason, were going missing and it was up to Red and Justice to figure out why. Behind the Kickstarter 02 This project is pretty much an amalgamation of things I loved as a kid, and still do. Things like crime fighters, spies, espionage, adventures and saturday morning cartoons, and hats! The biggest influence came from the listening to a lot of big band music and jazz and at the time. Music in general is a huge inspiration behind my work. When I listen to a piece of music that I really connect to I start to picture a story and characters that could fit within that particular song, like a theme song. So I drew up a lady and her dachshund that wear matching hats and go around town beating up bad guys to this super catchy upbeat song. I even got sooo into it that I made a couple of songs, using some random music software and not knowing anything about music at all. The overall feel I wanted to capture for this short was that of a Saturday morning cartoon episode.
