Jojo said on her insta live that she doesn't have a label because she isn't really sure what it would be, and she thinks humans are awesome. So please, please, remember she is super young, and still figuring things out, so don't try and push her into any boxes unless she eventually says she wants to be in one specifically, because that could do more harm than good.

Plus it's awesome that this now shows a bunch of kids that you can be happy being yourself without having to put a specific label on it if you're not comfortable, and that's beautiful.

There’s a lot of discussion about the broturi right now and we are just a twilight discord. That’s all. Regardless of age, we don’t tolerate racism or bullying. We didn’t want to go into detail about the situation on tumblr because the people most directly impacted by the racism didn’t want the comments made towards them to be made public. We will address any accusations sent in our inbox publicly if necessary!

Simply put, people were removed from the chat for either making racist statements toward POC within the chat and in general, or enabling racism by trying to ignore the issues that came forth.

A statement about the recent “drama” you might have seen:

Hello there are a lot of rumors being spread about the broturi and some events that happened within our discord recently. It’s taken me a moment to speak because we have had several incidents happen back to back.

I would like to clarify first and foremost that we do not tolerate racism. We will not ever tolerate racism and we refuse to stand with people who hold racist ideas.

Over the past few days we had to remove several members. And it has taken an emotional toll on everyone seeing people that we genuinely loved and trusted turn out to believe things that go against the existence of many of us. We are not being toxic we just refuse to associate with racist people plain and simple.

These are just two of the incidents, but they are the ones that personally involved me. I have screenshots available but my goal is not to defame these people I once called friends. I simply want to clear up the situation that happened with the broturi and why we are being called “bullies” or “toxic”. Yesterday a racist comment was made at me(an Asian woman) that stereotyped the appearance of all Asian people. Do I think the person meant to be racist? No. Do I think they were aware that they were perpetuating stereotypes? No. However that was still the impact of their words. I, a person of color, should not have to sit down when people say racist things to me. Their apology was “I’m sorry that came off as offensive I want you to know that wasn’t my intention”. That is not an apology. That dismisses the problems. I immediately explained that I know it wasn’t their intention but it was still the impact of their words and that they didn’t mean to be offensive but they were. I also explained that “we all mess up and have things we can work on but what is important is understanding the problem, actually changing, and trying to do better in the future”. Other people, including other Asian people, came in and agreed focusing on the aspect of actually learning the problem and changing behaviors in the future. All we wanted was to help educate our friend. And explain what the problem is. It can be extremely hard to be told that one of your views is problematic and we have all had to experience that, but what’s important is how we respond to it and show growth.

Another member came in an called us bullies FOR EDUCATING SOMEONE ON HOW THEIR VIEW WAS HARMFUL AND PERPETUATED RACIST STEREOTYPES. I did not ask anyone to defend me when I DEFENDED MYSELF AGAINST RACISM, but people did in a clear educational manner. They accused me of attacking the original person and basically tried to silence me. All I was doing was defending myself and trying to educate a friend who made a microaggression against me. This person was talking over me a person of color who experienced a racist comment and telling me how it should’ve been handled. All they did was blame and backtrack. They also implied that being white passing meant they could tell me how to handle it. I am white passing as well, less white passing than them but still. As someone who is moderately white passing it is my job to listen when people who are more obviously people of color talk about their experiences with racism because they have experienced more than I have. Being white passing allows a certain level of privilege that I acknowledge and I wish they would as well. I am also frustrated that they were angry with the people speaking out against racism than the person who made the racist statement. Recently I have been thinking about the quote “In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist.” - Angela Y. Davis.

Please understand that I did love these people but I must defend myself against racism towards myself and others. I didn’t make this message to expose anyone or stir the pot. I know there is a belief that the broturi exists for people to chase clout and cause drama. I would not be part of it if that was so. The broturi are genuinely my friends and for the most part I experience so much love and care from them. These events have been extremely hard on us, especially our POC members.

You can decide for yourself what to believe but look at the evidence we have provided. Ask yourself why people are so angry that we stood up against racism. Ask yourself why refusing to sit silent in the face of racism makes us bullies. As poc it is important to encourage other poc not to accept any forms of racism. As allies it is important to listen to poc with how they choose to address racism they are experiencing and amplify their voices. If you are angry that we will not tolerate racism in our friend group then maybe ask yourself why? Nobody should have to feel unsafe amongst friends because of the color of their skin. It’s easy to reblog a post about standing up against racism, but make sure to stand by that when it actually happens. It isn’t easy to stand up to friends, family, loved ones, etc. but it’s necessary.

That means you spent god-knows-how-long opening up twelve whole cartons of eggs, carefully placing each egg one-by-one inside a big basket, and then covering it with a big picnic cloth… and at no point- at no point- did you ever stop and think “gee, there might be TOO MANY FUCKING EGGS HERE”
