"Untitled Goose Game Original Soundtrack" on gray marble recycled vinyl; composed by Claude Debussy; adapted by Dan Golding; released in 2020 by @iam8bit. Comes in an eco-friendly recyclable cardboard jacket w/ embossing and a custom inner sleeve. The soundtrack is mostly made up of adaptations of Claude Debussy's Préludes. The whimsical piano pieces compliment the mischievous nature of the goose wonderfully. This is certainly a very interesting release for its "gimmicks," particularly the "double groove" gimmick on side B, which allows for a "non-linear" and "dynamic progression" listening experience. Essentially, since the game itself has a dynamic soundtrack by using hundreds of stems in order to have the music appropriately change to what's taking place on screen, this vinyl version attempts to capture a sampling of this by having the stylus run into random grooves every time the record plays. It's certainly one of the most interesting things I've seen a record do. Side B also has some hidden bonus tracks and a locked groove of the infamous goose honk sound effect (of course).

"Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (Sound Selection ♦ Sélection Musicale)" on picture disc vinyl; composed by Yoko Shimomura, ACE+, & Manami Kiyota; released in 2020 by Nintendo of Europe. This came bundled with the European Collector's Edition boxset of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition for Switch. It contains twelve selections, as opposed to the CD/digital version, which contains 20 selections. However, unlike the other Nintendo picture disc promos, this is actually filled with music. Also, as another surprise, this release sounds surprisingly very good for a picture disc, all things considered. Even though it probably wasn't necessary, Monolith Soft decided to record new mixes for selected songs for the Xenoblade Chronicles remake, and they all sound so very good. Xenoblade Chronicles' score was already legendary, but these reimagined versions do a wonderful job of offering something new to go along with the improved visuals. Some of the strongest tracks in the game are the epic battle themes, and you get five of the very best here.

Masami Ueda (Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Ace Attorney) & Hiroshi Yamaguchi (Wonderful 101, Anarchy Reigns), who both worked together on the Ōkami score prior, created a good chunk of the music here. Bayonetta's music matches her personality to a T: stylish and sexy. The acid jazz and cabaret influences come together to achieve a unique and unforgettable score, particularly in the many battle themes throughout. The Bayonetta games move at a constant fast pace, practically bombarding the player with all sorts of crazy set pieces and events, and the composers made sure to create new pieces of music for all of them, which is why there's so much material here. SML has a stereo mix, while SML2 has a mono mix. Both sound pretty lo-fi, but not actually the worst as far as Select/Start, though I assume they were both sourced from either YouTube or KingdomHeartsInsider mp3s as usual. "Zombie Daisuki Original Soundtrack" on CD; composed by Soyo Oka & Keisuke Ito; released in 2011 by noisycroak RECORDS. Developed by Chunsoft, Zombie Daisuke is a very overlooked Japan-only RTS-type game for Nintendo DS. It has a colorful, cartoony art style and its main objective for each stage is to take over towns by controlling hoards of zombies using the touch screen. For non-Japanese speakers, the game isn't too bad to learn, though you won't be able to read the objectives for each stage and the game isn't exactly popular enough for someone to have made an English guide. Roughly half of the soundtrack is done by the legendary ex-Nintendo composer Soyo Oka, and the other half is by Keisuke Ito, who more recently composed the A.I. Somnium Files soundtracks. Almost the whole soundtrack is chiptune-focused and uses a lot of the same catchy motif throughout. Perfect for a cute, old-school-style game like this. "Sonic the Hedgehog CD" on white cassette tape; composed by Masafumi Ogata & Naofumi Hataya; released in 2023. Limited to 40 copies; this is number 5. Comes with a slipcase w/ inner printing, and an individually numbered fold-out glossy J-card that contains artwork, the track listing, and lyrics. Contains the complete soundtrack to the Japanese/European version of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, plus Sonic 6290 Mix from Sonic Gems Collection and the instrumental version of Cosmic Eternity - Believe in Yourself. The songs appear to have been sourced directly from the game disc/console hardware since they contain the brief intros that are missing from the 20th Anniversary remaster and it also has the console mixes for the past tracks which sound slightly different. There's also some occasional neat transition effects worked in between songs. Of all the tapes I own, this one really nails down every last detail and is truly a great tribute to the game. I'd easily place Sonic CD within my top and most listened to soundtracks of all time. Composers Masafumi Ogata and Naofumi Hataya really went all-out when they were given the freedom to bring Sonic music into the realm of full CD quality. Like the game itself, a lot of times the music is just pure insanity. It incorporates house, rock, techno, new age, acid jazz, and all sorts of other stuff, creating a high adrenaline rush of upbeat jams. Lots of it also manages to be effectively atmospheric. It's funny--I grew up hearing Spencer Nilsen's North American version of the soundtrack, but I always knew what the Japanese music was because I also owned the Sonic & Knuckles Collection for PC, which had the complete JP Sonic CD OST (in low quality) within its file folders. Once I discovered this, I'd listen to the songs over and over, but I had no idea they were from Sonic CD, because I don't think they were labeled as such. Contains the complete NES soundtrack between both sides. Kirby's Adventure is perhaps my favorite NES soundtrack, and favorite Kirby soundtrack overall. There's a lot of song variety and literally every one of them is an earworm. This is another album that was available to purchase through the Nintendo Power catalog. A cassette version was also available. Unklike the Greatest Hits album from earlier the same year, Race Tracks provides a more complete version of the soundtrack. Though the Japanese Nintendo 64 Sound Series release is more complete since it has a sound effects collection and some other miscellanious minor tracks, this one has longer loops. "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker" soundtrack on clear lathe cut vinyl, composed by Michael Jackson, Hiroshi Kubota, & Roppyaku Tsurumi; released in 2019 by Select/Start. Originally limited to 30 copies; I believe more were made later. The release is single-sided and features selections from the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive soundtrack plus the unreleased track "Thriller." It came with a set of crayons which I made full use of. Let's get into what sucks about this one. First of all, the fact that it's single-sided was never advertised and this fact did not affect the price whatsoever. Secondly, talk about a missed opportunity; why is the reverse side not the vastly superior arcade version of the soundtrack? Awful. And thirdly, this might sound even worse than Sonic 2. Well, okay, maybe not that bad. But it's pretty bad. "Mario Story: Original Soundtrack" (Paper Mario) on 2xCD; composed by Yuka Tsujiyoko w/ Koji Kondo; released in 2000 by Enterbrain. Comes in an all-orange jewel case w/ stickers, an 8-page booklet, and a postcard. Contains the complete original Nintendo 64 soundtrack (73 tracks at 2 hours and 25 minutes) with enhanced/pre-compression sound quality. A US Nintendo Power version was released a year later; however, its sound quality is significantly worse since it appears to be sourced directly from the game cartridge instead with a constant faint hum throughout. This is one of three soundtrack releases that I consider to be part of a series since they all have matching unique packaging, the other two being Mario Tennis and Mario Party 3. Yuka Tsujiyoko (who mostly has only worked on the Fire Emblem series outside of this) created a soundtrack that would set the stage (literally?) for a whole series, though I still really only thoroughly enjoy the first two games. While it most likely took at least some partial inspiration from Super Mario RPG and other earlier RPGs, the music of Paper Mario manages to stand out on its own, bringing an appropriately more lighthearted approach throughout. "Ecco the Dolphin" on solid blue vinyl; composed by Spencer Nilsen; released in 2016. Comes with a hype sticker. The barcode on the back is identical to the original game's. Contains the full soundtrack, but condensed to fit on a single LP. This unfortunately results in one track on side A cutting off rather abruptly, but other than that, there's nothing too abnormal about the mix and presentation. Though Discogs claims there was a repress in 2019, this is false information; however, another unathorized 2xLP version of the soundtrack did release that year by a different label. This release originated in France, but not much else is known about it. Spencer Nilsen and Ecco the Dolphin were basically made for each other. Although I can take or leave most of his contributions to Sonic CD (though make no mistake, I do still acknowledge it has some bangers), his score for Ecco is nothing short of magical. His easy-listening new age style fits the game's atmosphere unbelievably well. Some incredible ambient pieces on this one. Also, as a side note, can we just take a minute to acknowledge how strange Ecco the Dolphin is? There's something about it that always made me feel uneasy as a kid and it's hard to even put my finger on. "Shin Ultraman Music Collection" on 2xCD; composed by Shiro Sagusi & Kunio Miyauchi; released in 2022 by King Record Co., Ltd. Comes housed in an outer slipcover and contains two booklets of sheet music. Just like Shin Godzilla before it, Shin Ultraman is, for all intents and purposes, the biggest love letter to the franchise imaginable. I had such a fun time viewing this in a theater earlier this year and there's never a dull moment. All of the tributes to the classic practical effects, all of the ridiculous plot twists, and of course, an epic score to go along with it all. Grossfeld, Michael Walen, Ken Cummings, Louis Cortelazzi, & Bob Mayo; performed by Jason Paige, Russell Velazquez, Andre Betts, Joshua Tyler (no Ford), Ray Greene, Sheila Brody, Marti Lebow, Vicki Sue Robinson, Rachael Lillis, Eric Stuart, Maddie Blaustein, Ted Lewis, J.P. Hartmann, Yvette Laboy, James "D Train" Williams, Babi Floyd, & John Loeffler; released in 2023. This is copy number 210. Comes in an individually numbered matte finish jacket w/ embossed printing and golden stamping, a hype sticker, and two other stickers. The jacket has a really nice homage to Nirvana's "Nevermind." Pressed at 45 RPM, it contains the full original album, originally released in 1999. The album is a tie-in for the English dub version of the anime by 4Kids Entertainment, and contains the full version of the iconic theme song sung by Jason Paige, along with 12 other original songs that relate to the show such as the PokéRAP, Viridian City, What Kind of Pokémon Are You?, Together Forever, Double Trouble, and, of course, the title track. During commercial breaks, excerpts from these songs would often play. As nostalgic and delightfully cheesy this all is for me, and as great as this pressing sounds, one thing is absolutely apparent now: this album was absolutely written and designed to brainwash children. There's just no denying it. Most of the songs on here are to get you absolutely beyond hyped to spend money on Pokémon. And guess what? It succeeded and then some. Though I wouldn't really recommend this to people who didn't grow up with the show, it was still a joy to revisit this material. "POTION: Relaxin' with Final Fantasy" on CD; composed by Nobuo Uematsu; arranged by Nobuo Uematsu, Maire Bhreatnach, Shiro Hamaguchi, Shiro Sato, & Yoko Shimomura; released in 2001 by DigiCube. One of the very earliest Final Fantasy compilation albums made up mostly of previously released arrangements.
