PLEASE I HOPE THIS MESSAGE REACHES THE RIGHT AUDIENCE
SPI's Universe RPG (1981) is not only deserving of some OSR review and appreciation, it is str8 up bolder + better in capturing the last shred of authentic belief in capital S capital O - Space Opera than Traveller ever could ......
I mean I don't know if I can defend that position. Buf.... I believe it
Universe had some bold and innovative ideas about character creation that never really caught on, sadly. It also had some of the best space combat around, especially at the time. OP is absolutely right, Universe was Space Opera, capital letters. Traveller was never really a space opera game, it was more hard sci-fi, and FGU's Space Opera was fucking unplayable (like we used to say, "FGU" stood for "Fucking Game's Unplayable"). It's really too bad that Universe died when SPI was acquired by TSR the very next year.
