GHOST-FACED BAT, Mormoops megalophylla
Bio: The ghost-faced bat in the southwestern United States to southeastern Brazil, most commonly in humid and arid regions near standing bodies of water where they'll prey on insects. They live in large, spaced-out colonies in caves or tunnels and at night can be seen vacating in large groups and dispersing to hunt. Like most bats, they use echolocation to feed and are insectivores; most of their diet is comprised of large-bodied moths and they notably have high dietary specialization. Unique to the ghost-faced bat, these creatures are excellent fliers as they catch insects high above the group, and they are also highly thermal sensitive. They're homeotherms, but their low basal metabolism makes it difficult for them to regulate their temperature below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, particularly for pregnant females who will cluster in the back of the cave to maintain warmth. They also appear to be environmentally sensitive as well considering fossils indicate that their range used to be much larger. They don't hibernate, enter torpor, or migrate, and physically they are known for the leaf-like skin flap that protrudes from their chin.
Traits: Like most individuals with bat daemons, the ghost-faced bat soul is going to be relatively introverted but socially aware, amiable and conflict-avoidant, as well as opportunistic and persistent. Bats are great forms for xxFJ 5s and 6s, and the ghost-faced bat in particular seems to suit the IxFJ 6 very well. What's unique to this species of bat is their sense of specialization, determination, and sensitivity. The ghost-faced bat individual is going to be someone rather anxious particularly outside their comfort zone; they enjoy the feeling of knowing what's expected and having stability, and don't do well with spontaneity or surprises. While they're socially tolerant and find security in having people they can depend on and to not be in the spotlight, they're even less communal than other bat species. They value their personal space which make come from a place of avoiding too much vulnerability. How sensitive they are is key for them; they're easily overwhelmed and may be more emotionally sensitive than they let on. They're people of habit but within that niche they excel, their drive and determination really blossoming when something catches their interest or they know they can do well in it. However like most bats, they're also going to be humble, perhaps even unaware of their personal strengths.
BROWN-NECKED RAVEN, Corvus ruficollis
Bio: The brown-necked raven is a common bird throughout northern Africa where it lives primarily in desert environments. These birds are scavengers, feeding on carrion, snakes, locusts, fish, grains, and fruits; they've also been observed to engage in cooperative hunting, both in the case of jointly cornering prey as well as driving off larger predators from their kill (kleptoparasitism). Even among humans, brown-necked ravens are aggressive pests and fearless when stealing food, only becoming cowed when confronted. Their nesting behavior is rather interesting due to the low tree density of their home range; they build their nests almost exclusively in shaded acacia trees and will defend their nest sites vigorously. Chick mortality is lowest when breeding earlier in the cool months, though some brown-necked ravens that breed later will nest beneath larger Egyptian vulture nests to utilize that nest's shade. As a diurnal homeotherm, the brown-necked raven has to employ strategies to stay cool in the desert heat; they're often observed with their heads bent to create insulation and enhance heat dissipation, and they tend to be more adaptable to arid environments than over species of raven. Finally, like other corvids, they're exceptionally intelligent and good at pattern-matching.
Traits: Corvid daemons are known to be highly resourceful and adaptable, innovative and socially aware, as well as expressive and clever. Most MBTI typings put Ne/Ni high in their stack, fitting xNxPs and xNxJs. The brown-necked raven seems to fit the ENxP 3 or perhaps 7; they seem to lead with Ne, which reaches out to form connections and construct frameworks through doing things, making this individual come across as spontaneous and innovative. This is certainly a descriptor for the brown-necked raven soul. What sets these individuals apart from other corvid daemons is how hardy and adaptable they are. This person is capable of thriving in difficult situations; they exude confidence when they're around others, and are naturally talented at forming those connections that will enable them to excel. They're known for their boldness and assertiveness — it's not a stretch to say they may be manipulative when needed, as their highly opportunistic nature gives them a strong personality and an impulsive streak. While clever and good at pattern-matching, they likely tend more towards flexibility rather than rigid planning. They know what works for them but don't shy away from new opportunities, particularly if it seems like they'll yield high reward. Undoubtedly extroverted, these individuals are likely quite cliquish while also prioritizing their own individuality and success.
DEER MOUSE, Peromyscus
Bio: Deer mice earned their name because of how they will jump when surprised and are also exceptionally agile and fast, notoriously more energetic than Mus musculus though are tamable. They're highly adaptable and have so many subspecies due to how readily they evolve to fit their environment from alpines to tropics. The diet of diet mice is adaptable as well; they are nocturnal and forage at night, preferring to be granivorous but will also eat fruits, invertebrates, and fungi as well, often foraging in shallow water due to their strong swimming skill. Like many rodents, they will cache their food particularly in the autumn months. Deer mice are solitary outside of breeding season and winter. They either occupy existing burrows or will build their own in tree cavities, and they fill their homes with plant fiber, fur, and feathers. In the winter months many deer mice will occupy a burrow to keep warm and may enter torpor, and in breeding months a monogamous pair will live together until the pups are weaned and dispersed, at which time one of the adults will leave. Deer mice are sedentary and remain in the same home range. They're also shy but expressive, communicating through vocalizations, grooming, foot stamping, and posturing.
Traits: The deer mouse soul will share some traits innate to other small rodent individuals, such as being adaptable and resourceful, hardy and proactive, as well as perceptive and curious. Most often mice are considered xSxP 3s or 6s, and I think the deer mouse fits very well as an IxTP 6. They value self-sufficiency, security, and innovative, both reserved and cautious as well as agreeable and adaptable. This individual, like most small rodents, is going to be fairly high-strung and have an anxious streak. They crave familiarity and stability and don't experience a strong inclination to put themselves at risk. While being an innovative and inquisitive person, they prioritize a sense of adaptability in keeping themselves afloat and doing what they have to do rather than being spontaneous for the joy of it. They're highly flexible but prefer a simple life; they may be willing to be stubborn to protect their comforts and will adamantly speak up for their feelings in a safe environment, but when push comes to shove, they prefer to change course rather than buckle down. Socially, these people are going to be introverted but tolerant, perhaps someone difficult to truly get to know. They're cooperative but need their personal space and alone time — particularly when focused on work or their passions. They work hard and rest hard, most comfortable when thinking objectively and taking care of details.
HALLOWEEN CRAB, Gecarcinus lateralis
Bio: Also known as the red land crab or whitespot crab, the Halloween crab lives high above the tide line along the coastal rainforests and mangroves of Central America. They live distant from the water in burrows they dig in soft soil, though they return to the ocean in the rainy season to release their eggs. Larvae will develop near the water, then migrate to land as juvenile crabs where they will spend their adult life. They're herbivores that feed on leaf litter, seedlings, detritus, and algae, though in captivity are opportunistic feeders. Halloween crabs can indeed be kept as pets, but are known for being both skittish and aggressive. They spend most of their time hidden in substrate and emerge at night to scavenge; they're solitary and territorial, and will not hesitate to use their claws when threatened. Their burrows can be up to five feet in length and they're also excellent climbers, known to be escape artists when kept in captivity.
Traits: Crab daemons can be variable, but generally they can be described as independent but socially tolerant, determined and busy, as well as defensive and fickle. They tend to be xxTPs, often 3s, 4s, 5s, or even 9s for more placid species. The Halloween crab I do think would fit an IsTP 4 as they tend to be more withdrawn and self-focused, but also with a drive to figure things out on their own. These people absolutely come across as private and boundary-keeping, but they can be socially tolerant to those who have hung around in their space long enough and don't come with unnecessary drama. Halloween crab souls prioritize a peaceful, stable environment without any disruptions that distract them from their work or routines. They're hardworking people but also specialized and stubborn, preferring to only do what makes themselves feel accomplished and resistant to jumping through hoops. While they're more reserved and conflict-avoidant, crossing a boundary of theirs ignites their defensive and combative side. Still, a Halloween crab person will never bite off more than they can chew. They tend to be modest and down-to-earth like most land crab daemons, in no need of recognition and for that reason may have an aloof or even arrogant reputation. It's just as likely that these people may be more sensitive than they let on and may feel like an outcast, so it feels best for them to clam up and keep to their secure interests.
