Sometimes things in context… are better
I’ve legit been searching for this video for a couple weeks
Hey! Your underground temple is absolutely stunning!!! I was wondering if you have any process pics of it? I would love to see your workflow :)
Hello and sorry for the late reply !
I did this design during my summer internship last year, andi was under the supervision of @vnzzz who taught me the steps to follow inorder to understand background design. I’ll try to explain those steps and my personalprocess through this thread.
1. Early stages : Thumbnailing andsketching
Here are a chunk of the sketches i did to begin with :
My first sketches (not shown here) were way too focused on details, and mysupervisor brought me back to the essentials : getting a strongsilouhette, making a clear statement. The key word being : concept. Myidea was an underground forgotten temple, trapped within a huge structure, akinto huge sewers mixed with industrial elements. The goal was then to design theplace like i would with a character : trying to find a good shape andsilouhette, a clear one, that quickly translate your idea to the viewer. Atthis point there is a lot of brainstorming to do, and refining your concept byasking yourself a lot of questions :
-How did this place came to life ?–Who lives there ? –What kind of time period is it ?
2.3D model
Once i had made enough research to figureout the global design of the scene, i made a 3d model in google sketchup. Ithelped me to figure out the global proportions of the place and have a betterunderstanding of its volume. This is a free and very simple software that irecommend a lot ! The other great advantage of 3d in this case is that youcan place your camera anywhere you’d like and generate a simple linework out ofit. This method is used in production work because it allows layout andbackground artists to start with a good volume and perspective basis. Fromthere, they’ll use a design reference and complete the linework.
3.Roughing things out
After choosing an interesting view of thetemple, i started to add the main structural elements. It was a process ofgoing back and forth with my supervisor who provided a lot of advices andcorrections that i applied the best i could to the design. Going through manyiterations, the temple started to take form. One of the important task was toadd details without loosing the sense of structure and silhouette. It isimportant to establish good scale relationships between the elements in orderto keep it coherent.
This brings me to the next point :
4.REFERENCES
This is probably one of the most criticalpoint of drawing in my opinion. Ourimagination is fairly grounded in reality. It is really hard for us to imaginesomething completely from scratch, especially in the fields of drawing andcreative work. If you want to draw something which is believable, be it acharacter or background, you’ll need to understand it well. The references thencome into play. Internet gives the artists of today a tremendous amount ofinformations and photographies about a huge range of topics, that artists fromthe past couldn’t even dream of, and it would be a waste not to take advantageof it !
In my opinion, understanding is key, andmore important than copying. While using references, a good thing is to analysewhat you are seeing, deconstruct the information in order to re-use it at wishwhen you need it.
Here are just some examples of references ipicked up for this design :
The sewers of Tokyo : This was a hugediscovery for me ! I had no idea that this kind of structure existed and iwas amazed by its sheer gigantism ! And it also was a perfect fit to whatkind of ambiance i was looking for!
A LOT of temple, shrines and eastern asia architecturereferences ! I needed to know and understand what i was seeing, how thoseroofs would assemble, what shape would the pillars be, what kind of materialsand details would compose this kind of architecture and so on…
Some industrial and mecanical references aswell for the pipes and ruins around !
5.Cleaning and coloring
While using references, i went on tocleaning. When designing a background, i don’t think you need to have a perfectlinework as long as everything reads well and clearly. At this stage it ismostly refining everything, adding details. A good thing is to have differentline thickness for the foreground and background, details and global shapes. Itbuilds hierarchy and make different planes differenciate better from eachother.
I added simple colors areas in order tomake the different elements of the design stand out. It doesn’t relate to thereal colors, they are merely informative.
Once i finished everything, i decided to bringit to life with color, and then compositing and 3d, but this would deserve a different thread !
6.Last words and ressources :
I hope you enjoyed this thread and that it’llbe of any help !
Go check the blogs of my supervisors andcolleagues during my internship, they do RAD backgrounds :
Vnzzz
Yann Legall
Thomas Romain and his perspective tipswich are a must-have ! They are very clear and useful !
Concerning resources, i would recommend (ifyou haven’t already) getting a pinterest account with loads of boards.
Also check https://www.textures.com it is basically aimed for 3d texturing, but there is a lot of variety in shapes and forms whichcan be useful when looking for references.
There also is THIS reddit called the « safefor work porn network » Despite its strange name, this reddit has thousands and thousandspictures about many different topics. You can spend hours gathering referencesthere.
As a conclusion, i would say go anddraw, draw a lot, and draw some more, keep practicing, analysing, referencing, designing and having fun !
Have a nice day !
working memory bad 💚
sometimes...reddit is ok...
archive link to post (link). post text as follows:
This is so fucking stupid. I can't believe I'm doing this. I never use reddit, sorry if I do something wrong.
I (a 19 yr old girl) was watching Star Trek TOS a few weeks ago with 3 other friends (one 18 yr old guy, the other two don't matter) over a video call. We get to the episode Amok Time, and long story short there's a scene where Captain Kirk's shirt gets ripped right across his pecs (it kinda looks like one of those boob window sweaters?? idk how to describe it I'm sorry)
So when Kirk's shirt gets ripped I say some dumb shit about him having fatty milkers and the two other friends laugh and we just start making tit jokes and making up increasingly stupid words for "boobs".
We watch a few more episodes then call it a day and disconnect the call, and a few minutes after disconnecting the call my guy friend (we'll call him Tom) messages me and brings up the Kirk boob jokes in passing, like he was trying to make it seem casual but I started feeling like he was bothered by it and wasn't telling me, you know? So I asked him if the tit jokes bothered him and he got really defensive and didn't really answer the question.
Later one of the other two people that was there (we'll call him Mark) messages me and tells me that my guy friend was mad at me. Apparently Tom had ranted to Mark about how William Shatner (the guy who played Kirk) was a huge inspiration to him as a kid and he thought I was being extremely disrespectful referring to his character (not even HIM, his CHARACTER) in such a derogatory way (as if William Shatner is gonna give a fuck that some teenage girl in central America said his old character had fat hooters, but I digress)
So Mark said I should apologize, I said it was stupid for Tom to have a temper tantrum over such a meaningless situation, Mark said that was mean, so I caved and apologized (and no it wasn't a backhanded apology, I messaged Tom and said I didn't mean to be disrespectful towards someone he looks up to and that I'd refrain from doing it in the future)
But then Tom continued to give me the silent treatment and fucking brings it up whenever we talk Star Trek and I ended up snapping at him that he was being childish for holding onto this for so long, and that I'd already apologized and I didn't see why this continued to be such an issue.
Tom is now giving an even harsher silent treatment. Mark sides with Tom for some reason, and the other friend just thinks this whole thing is funny. I don't think I'm the asshole, I'll admit it, but some outsider perspective would be nice. AITA?
the fact u didnt add some of the comments in the archives is so upsetting bc it means ppl r missing GEMS like these:
Cap’n on deck
do you have tips for drawing black ppl? not like refs or anything bc thats obvious, but stuff like colour picking and how to properly colour someone of colour.
glad you asked!! Well theres a tutorial by my friend Jojo here about drawing black folks (there isn’t a post for tumblr soz), one by chuwenjie here about drawing asians (i think its predominately south east asians) and one by peachdeluxe here about avoiding whiteashing darkskins when drawing darkskins as zombies etc! Another friend of mine on things to avoid here! (in terms of racist caricature). I included the asian one since I feel its a good tutorial…! These tutorials are really informative, the last one is common sense but apparently not for a lot of artists, so its there just to be careful.
As for general tips, look at references, colour picking is NOT a crime, its not accurate but its better than actually white washing them and it can help get the best shade! Most poc have red-orange-yellow undertones, so grey-ish colours aren’t really great or a direct darker shade isn’t the best.
um for how I draw darker skinned people and pick my colours will be going under a read more!

How to draw Afro textured 4c hair - an explanation/Tutorial
For those of you that don’t know what 4c hair is, 4c hair is a hair texture type that contains coils to small and tight that the hair appears to be more puffy rather than curly ( like to photo below ) this is in NO WAY to be confused with curly hair. there is a drastic difference.
As a black artist that primarily draws characters with 4c hair, I’ve been asked many times to do a tutorial on 4c hair so here we go~
before we get into 4c hair, lets take a moment to fully understand it by talking about hair texture in a general sense first
let’s take a look at this example of straight hair vs curly hair ( 1 type straight hair vs 3 type curly hair )
If you take a moment to compare the two you’ll notice straight hair is flat, it has no texture. Straight hair perfectly hangs down similar to liquid-like silk. It’s lack of curl pattern is the reason as to why it hangs perfectly flat.
curly hair on the other hand doesn’t lie down flat and silky like straight hair, It’s more thick. Curly hair in it’s raw and unstyled state has a trapezoid like shape this is because the sides of the hair spread more outward.
So why is this? Why is straight hair flat and curly hair thick?
the answer to that question is a thing called piling up. When it comes to hair texture, the shape of the hair strands aren’t the only thing that matters, its how the strands coexist with each other, Curly hair strands coexist by piling up on top each other.
moisture also effects hair texture too, different hair types absorbs moisture differently, thus the thickness of each hair type is different.
…..soooo, how does this all relate to how to draw 4c hair??
Well let’s take a look at the drawing below. Notice how the arrows go outward more as the hair texture gets curlier. As we’ve already discussed, this is because hair piles up, The curlier the hair texture, the more it piles up on each other, the bigger it gets, the more outward the arrows go.
Out of any hair texture, 4C hair has the most curls. Because of this, the hair piles up on each other so much that it doesn’t lie down flat like straight hair, nor does it make a trapezoid like shape like curly hair, it instead becomes more cloud like.❤️
This is what you need to take into account when it comes to drawing 4C hair.
Think of it as piling up a bunch of cotton balls on each other. The most cotton on top of top to lead to a bigger patch of cotton. this is 4c hair.
How to not draw 4c hair:
Garnet fanart. Let’s talk about Garnet Fanart. I notice a trend that when artists draw Garnet from Steven universe, her hair texture is usually changed to 3 type curly like texture. This subtle form of White washing has confused me because this is inaccurate.
Garnet’s hair is in the shape of a cube. Though 3 type hair piles up on each other, it isn’t curly nor thick enough for their hair to stay in the shape of a cube. Curly hair lies down more than 4c hair. So garnet’s hair being in the shape of a cube is a dead giveaway that it is 4C. Why do you think hairstyles like flat tops are usually seen on black men with 4c hair? It’s because, the 4c hair texture is thick and strong enough to stay in whatever shape you put it in.
please, if you’re drawing a character with 4c hair, avoid drawing it like curly 3 type hair, this is very anti-black and texturist.
So, how do you draw 4c hair?
honestly, its the most easy thing in the world
i wanna clarify that blobby looking 4c drawings ( like the one on the top left ) can work depending on how cartoony your art style is.
Another thing that I want to greatly clarify when it comes to drawing 4C hair is, YOU. DONT. NEED. TO. DRAW. EVERY. HAIR. STRAND!…..like, seriously. I’ve gotten many messages about how 4C hair is hard to draw, and it’s always left me confused; but then I find out that the same people that have trouble drawing 4C hair, attempt to draw every single strand of hair. This is unnecessarily time consuming because it’s merely impossible to get every single detail down, especially when you have a simple cartoon style. 4C hair does not require much effort, all you’re doing is drawing lumps. It’s that simple, nothing more nor nothing less.
The reason why I greatly advise all of you to avoid drawing every single hair strand is because in real life, when you look at a 4C textured Afro, your eyes don’t pick up on each individual hair strand like straight or curly hair. 4C hair, appears to be more undefined and cloud like, so attempting to draw each and every individual strand is unnecessary and will most likely end up looking inaccurate.
Anyways! that’s it for now! there will be a part 2 to this tutorial that will come out next week! i hope you guys have learned from this and apply it to your black character in your art!~
