“Ellen’s husband loves her, but he can’t understand these ‘hysteric’ and ‘melancholic’ feelings she’s experiencing, and he’s dismissive of her. The only person she really finds a connection with is this monster, and that love triangle is so compelling to me, partially because of how tragic it is.”
Robert Eggers wants you to see his Nosferatu as both a lover and a biter
“[…] weird kind of sacred marriage, in a union sense, and a sort of completion of some kind of destiny […] he’s [Orlok] the only person who can understand and fulfill a part of Ellen.”
The Melodrama of Robert Eggers: The Nosferatu director doesn’t want to represent a modern point of view in his horror-adjacent movies
"in heathen times, you might have been a great priestess of isis."
chills, literal chills and tears.
this line and scene really top the movie for me.
bc in its essence, the movie is about ellen and her great desire that is repressed by the patriarchal society. orlok manifests as this desire of ellen's and appears the way the society views it. is it a sexual desire? yes, but it is also much more than that. it's the desire to fulfill her authentic potential and truth, it's the desire for freedom to explore the great unknown, it's the desire to embrace her power and to die, metaphorically rejecting the society and the false self it forces onto her, in order to be reborn as the one she is destined to be.
The bride of a dead man. 🥀
Everyone shut up Orlok can be both an embodiment of Ellen’s loneliness and isolation and alienation, AND her abusive ex, AND a reflection of the suppressed darker parts of herself, AND just a literal fucking undead creature of the night. There’s layers.
