Okay it's Leo's turn to relax. Being the face of the team has got to be tiring, right? And everyone needs a chance to sit back, light some incense and chill.

I want to do more with Leo and gladioli but i ran out of space and time here.

I'm also sick of trying to get the colour scheme right between my phone screen colours and what my laptop shows so I'm posting this right before I head to work. I may regret that later but too bad. It's Christmas Crunch time and I have a million different other things to do :/

Christians (specifically Protestants): we have little versions of our sacred text that we carry around in our pockets to pull out if we encounter something and want guidance. The version used during sermons and in church are the same ones that we carry with us

Jews: you can read the torah and Tanakh in a normal book if you want. But if you want a torah you can use as a congregation? *cracks knuckles* you must prepare paper made from the skin of a kosher animal and special ink and a quill made from a turkey feather and you must use no metal in the preparation process because metal is used in the creation of weapons for war and before you even think about actually started to write you must take The Holy Bath to purify yourself and ritually blot out the name of Amalek, the sworn enemy of the Jewish people and every time you write the name of god on the scroll you must say it out loud and recite a special prayer and if you mess up one letter you have to start over and when the scroll is finished you must wrap it in tapestries and pretty cloth and shit and then put little crowns on the end and then put it in a Super Special Box in the synagogue so every time it’s time to read it you can open the Super Special Box and everyone can gawk at the Ultra Big Boy Important Text and the words of god within the scroll. this entire process takes about a year to complete and is done by special sofer’s that devote their lives to making Torah’s specifically and when you read from the torah you must use a little tiny pointer in the shape of a hand so your hands don’t mess up the paper. Oh, you think I kid? You think I jest?

I think it's also worth noting--when these scrolls are damaged, it's not like with Bibles where you can just pop down to the nearby bookstore and pick up another copy easy and cheap. These things take literal years of time, effort, and love to create, and as such they're regarded with the utmost respect. These aren't just words on a page, they're sacred, cherished artifacts. In fact, in some synagogues, the Torah scroll can function as the 10th member of a minyan, a group of Jewish folks gathered for worship and religious ceremonies. These scrolls are, in a sense, members of the community themselves, because they carry such significance.

And, because these things are so damn time-consuming and difficult to produce, it's pretty common for them to be passed down through generations to multiple different synagogues--because you need one of these if you wanna have a synagogue, so your options are either getting an old one or commissioning a new one, which is super expensive because of aforementioned time and effort required. So oftentimes, these things have histories, long histories. Several scrolls in use today have their roots from before World War II, and were hidden or spirited away by Jews fleeing the Holocaust.

The Jewish community has so, so few things to hold onto, so much history lost and destroyed and pillaged by centuries of persecution. These scrolls, be they old or new, are beautiful things, and they deserve to be cherished and respected and preserved for the Jewish community, for all the Jews of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

A brand new “coffee substitute” while In reality it’s literally just masala chai with some ground up mushrooms and cacao thrown in for foolishness. Okay but masala chai sounds dope and i cant travel to india bc pandemic so does anyone know a legit place where i can buy real masala chai from not a shitty white man?

So here’s the thing:

“Masala Chai” literally just translates to “Spiced Tea.” That’s it, that’s what it means.

So like… you don’t actually need to buy it, you just need to make it, with ingredients you very possibly already have (and if not, now is a great time to support your local Desi grocer!).

The spice blends can vary by preference, but off the top of my head I’d say you need:

Black tea (Assam or Darjeeling are the most authentic options but you can use whatever you’ve got; use two tea bags if you don’t have loose tea)

Cardamom pods (star of the show)

Ginger

Cloves

Cinnamon sticks

Peppercorns

Maybe some star anise if you dig that (I do)

Milk and sugar

Water (obvs)

I’ll add some links to Desi food bloggers I like below (support Desi food bloggers along with Desi grocers!) with specific measurements and recipes, but basically what you’re gonna do is ground the spices, put them in a pan with the milk and water, bring to a slow boil, reduce heat, add tea, steep tea, sweeten to preference, DONE.

I’ve seen some people add fennel and other things to the mixture too, so you can be creative if you want to experiment.
