Oooh, this is very hard! I have to go with one from a published work and one from an WiP 👀
1.) “We all have the dead on our shoulders, the lifelong tasks of being carved out of marble and then figuring out what kind of shape we are.”
This is from a Fullmetal Alchemist fic I wrote several years ago, with a lot of my own experiences and feelings about being mixed race baked into the story. It’s a little pretentious and wordy, but I’m still proud of the story and find the sentiment still true.
2.) “ The very worst of it, the dark-red, flesh-covered cherry pit of the awfulness, came when John, teeth bared, like it was some kind of victory he’d earned, said,
“I can do it with her now, too, you know.” “
This is the first sentence of my current Beatles WiP. It was the first thing that sprung into my head, fully formed, and begged me to write more. I’ll leave the exact context up to mystery, but it’s a magical realism retelling of the Beatles story.
😠 (whats your least favorite part of your writing process?)
Planning - I am so bad at tying together multiple threads into a complex narrative, especially when I have a handful of emotional beats I want to hit and little else. I like research fine, but imagining what happens three chapters from now? Very difficult!
⛔️ (whats something you try to avoid in your work?)
I try and avoid getting lazy and letting my characters lose their distinct characterization in favor of bland, scripted dialogue. It’s so easy to write a “normal” conversation, where all parties follow an expected path, but it’s almost always untrue to the source material. I really try and imagine what they would say next, or what the most interesting/conflicting thing they could say next would be.
