At least, this is what Ventus’s Master would have him believe. Darkness was a thing of beauty to him - a necessity he thought was wrongfully neglected. Light and darkness were two halves of a complete whole, and to reject either side wholly based on arbitrary fears and desires was irrational. But that was the thing: the heart is irrational. Unpredictable. Although his Master would have Ven embrace the darkness for a higher purpose...It terrified him greatly.
Ven gripped his Keyblade tighter as he found himself in the badlands, surrounded by peculiar creatures his Master summoned. They were pitch black and humanoid in shape and stature. Long antennae protruded out of their heads and they twitched like large bugs. The way they moved so erratically made Ven feels like they could pounce on him at the blink of an eye, and every spastic movement made him flinch in fear. But the worst defining feature - the element that made Ven’s skin crawl the most - were those glowing, piercing yellow eyes. They were the kind of eyes you swore you saw leering at you from inside your dark closet at night. They were pure nightmare fuel, and they were trained directly on Ven.
These vile, dangerous, horrifying monstrosities were the true face of darkness? This was what Master Xehanort wished for him to embrace? The thought that even a trace of this darkness resided in his own heart made him nauseous. Was it so wrong to be afraid of the dark when it looked like this?
Ven watched in horror as more of these dark creatures surfaced from pools of dark goop. They inched ever closer to him, claws at the ready, and each step increased his anxiety.. Ven was still unrefined as a swordsman, but his Master was insistent on throwing him into these impossible trials hoping for quick results when they only thing they accomplished were his inevitable demise. Even with the Keyblade, these creatures would surely overwhelm him without the power of darkness
Useless with light and too scared to use the darkness...Ven was caught between a rock and a hard place.
“Please don’t do this, Master!” Ven finally snapped and begged for mercy, his voice weak and pathetic. “I’m not strong enough!”
His Master continued looked down on him with an expectant gaze from atop a nearby cliff. Ventus’s pleas did little to sway his Master’s black heart as the creatures continued to draw closer.
“Let the dark impulses waken in the pit of your heart.”
And it return, Ventus shut his ears to his Master’s demands.
“If you do not let the storm inside you run its course, it will wipe you from the face of the world, make no mistake!”
I would rather die than become this!
Ven let out a horrified shout as one of the dark creatures pounced on him - accommodating his inner desire.
Ven awoke with a start. A gasp escaped his lips as she sat up, his heart racing. He noticed the sun had begun to rise and light began to creep through his window.
After realizing he was safe, Ven let out a sigh of relief.
“That was nuts...”
He removed his covers and got on his feet. He psyched himself up for the day ahead - it was gonna be a long one.
♚ Do you agree with fandom interpretation of your character?
Oh boy. The Kingdom Hearts fandom is certainly a massive beast, I’m sure there are myriad fandom interpretations of Ventus, and I’m sure there are some pretty awful ones, but I haven’t delved deep enough to really get a grasp on any general fandom consensus. Most stuff I’ve seen about him is just harmless fluff, and I haven’t seen any Ven RPers in action sans one that I thought was just bland and not very noteworthy...So I guess my final answer is “depends”.
✦ Has your own interpretation changed from when you first began playing the character?
I’ve only just started playing Ventus and have only done a few replies with him, so not much has changed at all. I have begun to focus more on his playful/goofy side (you can thank andromeda mod for that), but other than that things have yet to develop.
“That’ll be the bonus! I’ll get to see awesome stunts and cool off,” he laughs.
“Really? They said that? Well...Guess I shouldn’t disappoint them by losing!” It meant more work, but it would be effort put toward something he actually wanted for a change. “You’re right, I’ll start practicing today. Thanks, Aqua!”
“Whoa, that sounds awesome! I gotta get front row seats for that one!“
Ven’s grin deflates after being chastised for his laziness. “Uh, well...Maybe a bit of napping, and sometimes getting ice cream with friends...This is the one time of the year I get to really goof off, Aqua! Don’t I deserve a little rest?”
She knew this kid. She wasn’t exactly close to him, more of an acquaintance really. Here he was snoozing on a bench in the middle of the shopping strip. Xion had just left work, the rest of her day free to do whatever.
She debated whether or not she should wake him. Looking around she didn’t see anyone coming to claim him.
“Hey…” she nudged his shoulder lightly, “Wake up, Sleeping Beauty.”
When Ventus sleeps, he sleeps like a log; a trait the narcoleptic young lad laments. He wished he could be a light sleeper who could be awakened by even the tiniest bump in the night - it would make his life much simpler. Instead he had to be the type of person who needed an airhorn blown in his ear to be woken up. The slight nudge from the young woman hoping to rouse him from his slumber proved fruitless. He just continued to sit there like a lump, mumbling some incoherent babble in his sleep.
“Mmm...yerakidanao...yera...squidnao...”
He smacked his lips together and unconsciously shifts his body. Seems like Xion’s gonna have to try harder...
“Hmm...That would be pretty rad, but it’s not really what I’m looking for.” He’s too invested in his own conundrum to notice all this salt in front of him.
