In Equestria, Princess Luna-- no longer a mare of nightmares or jealousy-- has returned to her sister's side and lowers and raises the moon and stars each night, while also attending to the dreams of her citizens to ensure their nightmares plague them no longer.
In Realities Intertwined, however, Dr. Luna Maer, once a child psychologist, is now the mayor of a small town named Eclipse in Aelluria, and even her psychological knowledge cannot account for her dreams of a fantastical land.
She hated being ignored, loathed it. She raised the moon night after night, but ponies preferred the light of sisterâs sunny day, choosing to bask in it and sleep during her beautiful moonlight. Her work went unappreciated. It took great pains to raise the stars as well-- a task she still struggled with even after a thousand years-- and yet she still brought them forth every night in all their glory, and only select few ponies decided to gaze upon them.
It was an insult to her.
Luna wept often, her muzzle buried into her hooves. A calm voice reached her ears. âSister? Whatâs wrong? Come on and smi--â
âGo away, Celestia!â Luna had no patience with her, no desire to listen to her perfect, precious older sister, the one who was so bathed in light she cast a shadow on Luna without a single care.
Celestia frowned, immediately taken aback by Lunaâs rage, her demeanor becoming less understanding and more annoyed at her sisterâs petulance. âLuna! What in Equestria--â
âI SAID GO AWAY!â Luna stood up and roared, stomping her hooves into the ground, cracking the floor before using her magic to slam and lock the door in Celestiaâs face. Luna seethed. She raged.
She hatched a plan.
On the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, sheâd see it through. It would be bold. It would make a statement. Hatred and jealousy clouded her judgement, she did not see the end of this ending in Celestiaâs favor rather than her own.
She went through with it anyway.
âNot another step.â Luna hissed as Celestia made her way to her throne after participating in some festivities the local ponies had thrown for the sun goddess. âDid you really expect me to sit idly by while they all basked in your precious light?!â
âPrecious light? Luna--â Celestia tried to reason, but Luna interrupted. She would no longer take input from her older sister, no interjections-- this was her time. It was time for her to become the ruler she deserved to be, without Celestia.
âThere can only be one princess in Equestria...â Luna trotted between the two thrones and stood at the podium. â...And that princess... Shall be ME!â She raised her forehooves and stomped, cracking the podium, eyes glowing white with magic. The crack spread up to the stained glass window behind her and it broke, and as she glass glittered and fell, Luna raised the moon over the sun, eclipsing it. Black shadows engulfed and consumed the land, and a darkness swept over Luna, transforming her and warping her mind once and for all, into the evilest of ponies known to Equestria this day--
âLuna! I will not fight you! You must lower the moon! It is your duty!â
âLuna?â A sneer. âI am Nightmare Moon, and I have but one royal duty now-- to destroy you!â
An all out battle ensued-- Luna tossed and turned in her sleep in the real world-- Nightmare Moon firing magic after Celestia, who was hesitant to fight back, choosing to dodge and avoid rather than put an end to her younger sister, even though she was corrupted and too far gone. With a shout of anger, Nightmare Moon fired a blast of blue magic that hit Celestia squarely in the chest. The dark alicorn laughed and laughed. She had killed the sun.
It was in her hubris that she did not notice she had only wounded Celestia. The sun alicorn struggled to her hooves, and summoned the most powerful magic in all the land, magic that would no longer work after this due to Lunaâs creation of chaos: The Elements of Harmony.
With tears, Celestia summoned a powerful blast that Nightmare Moon desperately countered, and for a moment she held her ground, but not until a powerful golden light overcame her-- the golden light she hated so much-- and banished her to the moon for a thousand years, left to ponder her feelings in the cold, stony silence of space.
Dr. Luna Maer woke up with a scream.

âEh, a lot of people can actually get upset over today⊠Though, I donât think others normally get mad because itâs the Summer Solstice. Do you have any bad memories of July 21st, doctor?â
âOh, yes, because itâs Fatherâs Day, thatâs right...â Luna mused aloud before crossing her arms and looking at the boy. âI donât have any bad memories of today, actually, itâs just this weird feeling thatâs gotten worse every year.â Even more so after that particularly odd dream she had earlier.
âPerhaps... Hm. Tell me, young man, do you believe dreams have special meaning?â

She was not one to usually dream-- good or nightmares, and usually guided youths through conquering their terrors and inexplicable happenings in sleep. If she were to wake up and remember everything about this, though... This would be inexplicable, for the world she found herself in was fantastical.
It felt like a dream of a memory, lucid and real, but this body felt not her own, replaced by dark fur, hooves, wings, and a horn, a crown adorning her head. If she had the control to she might have wondered why she took this form, but that was not what was occurring in this scene, oh no.
She looked at her older sister, white with a pink mane in concern before they both looked at the old, wizened pony before them. His beard was completely white, his light blue fur starting to dot with gray hairs-- a contrast to her own vibrantly blue colors. He was a friend, a mentor.
Thatâs right. Starswirl. Starswirl the Bearded.
âI have to ask you two a favor,â he said with a bit of a wheeze, âas you know, when a Unicorn lowers or raises the sun and the moon, they lose their magic. There is not a single Unicorn left that feels confident enough to move either of them.â
Luna looked up into the sky and gasped-- the sun and the moon were both in the sky at the same time, each occupying half of the sky. She looked back at Celestia, who seemed deep in thought. âWhat are you asking of us?â Her sister said, tilting her head at the wizard, but Luna knew that Celestia already knew the answer. She always knew.
âAlicorn magic is fundamentally different than Unicorn magic, and you two are the only born Alicorns left in Equestria. Please, your Highnesses, raise the sun and lower the moon.â It seemed like he was pleading, but this was more like a trial, perhaps the most important one they would ever face-- which said a lot. They had run-ins with the Crystal Princess, stopped a war with Griffons (and avoided assassination), and befriended creatures with all walks of life, but their duties as royals felt unfulfilled, their destinies in question, for even though born-Alicorns aged different than ponies, years and years had gone by and the mark that signified a found destiny had not appeared on her or her sisterâs flanks.
âWeâll do it.â Luna spoke definitively and nodded at her older sister, and the two stepped forward out of the castle. A few tired Unicorns had come to watch, which made the younger, blue Alicorn feel a little nervous. What if they couldnât do this? What if the sky was forever ruined? Ponies doomed to live with split night and day?
Luna took to the air while Celestia stayed on the ground, and with a grit of her teeth, the younger Alicornâs horn lit up blue, while her sisterâs lit yellow. They moved, Luna descending, while Celestia took to the sky, both wobbly and struggling, but--
--the sun and the moon began to move.
Shakily at first and then steadily, Celestia put the sun high in the sky while Luna completely lowered the moon, the passing between the two of them creating a beautiful sunset the likes of which would be celebrated for generations, the day the Alicorn Princesses moved the sky.
Celestia flew back down to the ground and nudged her sister. âWe did it!âÂ
Starswirl joined them, and smiled warmly at the two, saying nothing, but the glint in his eyes and his chuckling said it all when Lunaâs eyes widened and did a double take at her sister. âTia-- Tia your cutie mark! Your mane!â Luna pointed frantically at her sisterâs flank which now bore the image of the sun-- the same sun on the Tree of Harmony they had been protecting, as well as the aurora-colored mane that swayed and sparkled in the light of the sun.
âMine? Well, what about yours?â Celestia laughed and Luna blinked before chasing her tail in an attempt to get a good view at hers.
âCutie mark! Iâve got my cutie mark! Itâs perfect!â Not giving a single care about her mane, that swirled with the stars of many galaxies.
The Two Sisters ruled together from then on, ushering in a new peace of Equestria, a new beginning to a land as old as time. That is, until--
--the mayor of Eclipse woke up in a cold sweat. âWhat in Equestria was that?â She clapped her mouth over her strange exclamation, she could remember only bits and pieces. She was, she was some sort of magical horse, and... and...
Did she have a sister?
Obtained Small Memory: Fifteen seconds of obtaining her cutie mark, briefly saw the raising and lowering of the sun and moon as well as her sister Celestia.
Something about the past week had felt so strange to Horatio, but just what it was, he couldnât entirely place. As he sat on a bench out in front of his home, regarding the moon carefully as if he could find an answer in its craters, he wondered if he should be using this time to sleep. He was dedicated to his work, but with that dedication came sacrifice, though this time the only sacrifice needing to be made was his own. With the end of his classes, perhaps he could finally get a good knightâs sleep. Ha ha. He would need to remember that one.
âAh, Dr. Maer. A good evening to you, I hope.â He nodded to her as a gesture of greeting, not wishing to stand up just yet. Being out and about at night helped calm him when something was bothering him, but he was never so forthcoming with his problems, even to those he had known for years. âClasses are over, Mayor. It is as good a time as ever to rest, before I start hearing back about summer classes. And yourself?â
The politician shook her head gently-- her long, dyed hair flowing with it, smiling bemusedly. âAh, Luna is fine, no need to call me Dr. Maer or Mayor when we are in a casual setting.â  She sat next to him, moving her cloak out of the way beforehand as so not to sit on it. Most of her citizens did not question her odd attire at this point. Most.
âI am fine. I just came out for a bit of star and moongazing. Itâs a favorite past time of mine. There is a meteor shower scheduled for later on this summer that I am looking quite forward to. The night sky is a spectacular phenomenon. Even as a practicing psychologist I have always been baffled by the fear of the dark. I find it welcoming.âÂ
She chuckled. âI donât miss being a TA at all, I hope that your summer classes are a little lighter in the amount of troublesome students at least. I do miss some parts of Aelluria University though. Go Spectrals, and all that.â
Here is a starter call for Princess Moonbutt! (Reminder though that while this post is using a pony icon, she is human in the four regions! I am just too lazy to crop more until I actually need them. So give me a reason to need them.) Her AU info is under the navigation button! Basically she is a psychologist turned mayor of a very small town in Aelluria and no one is quite sure how she was elected to the position but it keeps happening.
A fog crept through the wooded region of Aelluria as the moon hung brightly in the sky-- a perfect setting for a horror film, perhaps, but it was a regular view that its residents were quite accustomed to. Luna glided like the mist itself to stand near her neighbor and observe the night sky.
âWhat are you doing out so late, if I might be so bold to ask?â She didnât think he was much of a troublemaker-- he was an old man, one with a doctorate, none the less-- but if there was something troubling her citizens she wished to know. She was a practicing psychologist once, after all.
