These are my thoughts on Avengers Infinity War
There WILL be spoilers beyond this point. You have been warned.
I can't make a spoiler free segment for this film. Everything just FEELS so important. So, as I've said, I won't hold back on them. To start this, I'm going to give this movie 2 ratings, and I'll explain why. Depending on the viewer you are, and whether you've been following the MCU since the beginning. So, the first rating is the rating for the big MCU fans, and the second is the rating for the casual viewer who nothing or the BARE minimum of the MCU.
So, as I have been a fan of the MCU since Age of Ultron, (yeah I'm aware that isn't that well loved of a film BUUUT I defend it regardless) due to me being a cynical DC fan boy. But because of Age of Ultron, I've watched ALL the MCU films. So, I've grown a huge connection with all these characters. This movie, USES THAT CONNECTION against you. I'm not gonna sugar coat it. Half the cast die in this film, and they make you FEEL THAT. Which is AMAZING. Spiderman's death hitting the hardest. The fear in his dialogue when he starts to fade, it was heart breaking. It reminded me he's not a hardened Captain America or Black Panther, he's a scared kid.
I left the Theatre thinking on the film. The movie ends with Thanos WINNING. No happy end, no funny quips acting like nothing happened. The Avengers lost, and this loss has consequences. I wanted to discuss this film so bad but none of my friends have watched it yet. There's so much speculation and discussion that can be spawned from this film.
Thanos. JESUS CHRIST THANOS. Easily, EASILY, the greatest MCU villain. Don't get me wrong, Loki and Killmonger. Great villains. But Thanos has the perfect mix of sympathy AND understandablilty... is that a word? It is now. Thanos isn't EVIL. An asshole, for sure. But he isn't evil. Just uh... just ignore the universal genocide bit. But we find out he actually CARES about Gamora, giving him that extra sympathy layer. Sure it's a bit of a cop out but used on both him AND Gamora. If they keep this up in Avengers 4, I believe the Russo brothers can achieve the goal of making Thanos THIS generation's Darth Vader. He won't ever top him, obviously. But I believe 20 years from now, people will still be like, "Thanos is fuckin cool".
For MCU fans, I give this film a SOLID 9.8/10
It would be a solid 10/10, if it didn't have the issue of character balance. A lot of characters are sadly shoved to the side, or just conviently gone like Hawkeye
Now, as for the average viewer... I CAN'T say you'll get the same type of enjoyement. In fact, you'll be REALLY confused. This movie doesn't recap anything. So there's the issue of, what are the infinity stones? What hammer is Thor talking about? Why is there a talking tree? And much more.
Thankfully, Thanos still holds his great villain status. His dynamic with Gamora is lost if you don't watch the Gaurdians of the Galaxy film. But he still holds everything else. As a super hero film, the fight scenes are great, the dialogue, the humor is on point, the cinematography is great. It's all there, so if you're for just senseless entertainment, there ARE better options, but it's still a great choice.
For the general movie audience, I give this movie a 6.7/10
