Carlos talking about living out of the van and now I'm having feelings about John telling Dean he "kinda promised someone" he'd buy a van — we all assumed the someone was Mary but he never says that and all Mary asks later is what happened to the van, not that he broke a promise to her.

So. The entire series is about how John and Mary got together. Literally, this is the story, this ends in the army guy marrying new buffy...

The entire show literally has a fate. Except.

Except in keeping with the theme of not just spn, not just tfw, but literally calling your production company freewill entertainment, the idea is to defy fate.

Except the show began less than 2 years before it crashes full force into the narrative. Before it catches up to In The Beginning, sealing their fate forever. If the show gets renewed it will catch up. Before that happens, the narrative has to break, by design.

This episode made me cry.

This show is really a gift for the ones who stayed.

Is it a tragedy? Must be, because we already know how it ends, it’s inevitable. Millie needs to die for John to have his Anakin Skywalker journey. Carlos needs to die, he’s already a body in a bag inside a morgue, he’s literally a dead person walking. Lata needs to die, she’s following the footsteps of a dead girl. And Mary and John need to die because they already have.

But Dean Winchester is telling a story about healing, about love and support, about war veterans going to therapy and learning to process their trauma. About queerness, too, placed on a mine by destiny - the god of war calls himself destiny, he represents the inevitable path of the future that waits these characters because it’s already been written, he’s a mirror for the actual God who’s written the story of these young people. John can only save Carlos from the mine today, but not forever. But today he can.

(Dean promised us surprises, but how powerful is Dean in this narrative? We’ll find out only at the end…)

The entire premise is telling us this ends in John and Mary. That's it, that's their fate, that's the only ending. ... unless the show gets renewed. Unless they catch up to what we've seen. bc before that happens the narrative has to break, by design.

Yes John broke the spear like Michael did with Kaia’s spear, but the parallel that caught my eye the most was him killing the god with the broken piece of wood like Dean did with Lee with the broken pool cue.

Both were killing someone who was inviting them to join him and become like him, tragically bloodying their hands as the only good choice. There’s also something about the end of innocence, isn’t there? Dean kills someone who represented a good memory from the past but that later went down a monstrous path, and Dean refuses to let the nostalgia rose-tint his vision into giving Lee a free pass, embracing responsibility over Lee’s invitation to drop moral scruples and live an existence without care for others. John is embracing a warrior role, a choice (he joined the Vietnam war deliberately, he’s choosing to be part of the hunting gang) but also not something that is really a choice (the loss of his father making him a fighter since an early age, his connection to his father making him involved with the supernatural, and of course his role in the narrative we know about). Blurred lines between what’s monstrous and what’s not.

The thing is, this is Dean Winchester’s story.

As Carlos says, no matter what war we’ve fought or why and with which feelings about it, we all share the same trauma. And John and Carlos, the two war veterans, are the two sides of the Dean that’s gone through his own war against the script God wrote for him: one angry, drowining in the pain and the survivor’s guilt, unwilling to open up about his experiences and instead bottling up his feelings, forever stuck in the jungle; the other gentle, supportive, moving forward, allowing himself to style himself the way he likes regardless of prescrictive social roles, willing to speak about his experiences and share his feelings with others.

It seems already written that one side will win and the other die. Carlos won’t survive the show, John will become the man we always knew him as.

Of course that path is already written, it’s the script, it’s the destiny. The god of war calls himself destiny, a microcosm of Thee God’s destiny for the characters.

But what if Dean is rewriting the story? What if Chuck’s script doesn’t have to be an inevitable, inscapable prison?

What if Dean decides which side wins?

If you’d told me six months ago that I’d be crying my heart out over John Winchester I’d have called you a liar. But Robbie Thompson and Drake Rodgers have managed to turn him from almost a caricature of an abusive and neglectful father to a character that elicits genuine sympathy. It’s devastating to see how this trauma is breaking him down, eradicating his sweetness and compassion and reshaping him into a hard, violent man. I know I’m forever banging this gong but this show is really focusing so hard on the generational trauma that plagues each of the characters. This is show about trauma and how it changes a person. It’s going to be really hard to watch these characters succumb to each of their personal traumas but damn it makes for some compelling television.

They're doing this exactly how I'd been hoping/expecting. Without glossing over or trying to "redeem" John, it's giving a fuller picture of John as a person and the ways he broke and why he could spiral that far down. We're starting to see already how this good-hearted relatively innocent kid could become the obsessed, drill sergeant dad he becomes in the mothership, neglectful and emotionally abusive and tunnel visioned. At the same time it fits with a John who would be horrified by his future self.

The prequel's whole approach to trauma and PTSD is so intriguing to me. It's going into it in a very thoughtful way for all the characters.

jojo says carlos' pronouns are he/him because non-binary wasn't really known in the 70s but danneel and jensen have said that non-binary people have always existed so jojo says that carlos is basically the embodiment of a non-binary human but due to the time period they use he/him pronouns for Carlos!
