“If people really understood that someone really cared about them, then they would not be able to put their lives at risk. It doesn’t matter whether that person be parents, or siblings, or friends, or even someone they’re going out with. I wonder who will be there to let them know that there are always people like that in the world?”
normality is a paved road; it comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow. -vincent van gogh

A Love So Beautiful (Chinese Drama), 2017
KBS Drama Special; If We Were a Season
:sigh:
This short drama wasn’t anything I imagined, and yet so much more...
That one could love someone and not be in love with them...
That time alone is not enough--confidence, fate, and the split-second serendipity of falling in love all come into play as well...
That sometimes, feelings just can’t be helped...
Makes you realize that to fall in love with someone who just happens to love you back is a near miracle...
Just as seasons come and go, so does love...yet each season is a beautiful gift in and of itself...weaving itself indelibly into the tapestry of our lives--the memory of experiences lived, good and bad.
It’s the oldest story in the world. One day you’re seventeen and planning for someday. And then quietly and without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And that someday is yesterday. And this is your life.

October is about rainy days with a cup of your favorite tea and your laptop, curled up on the couch in a big blanket writing about everything.

usually the girl being the one that spurs the guy to greater heights in his work or art trope is aligning with and reinforcing gender roles—she’s the muse, he’s the artist; she’s the inspiration, he does the work—and what it ends up being is that publicly he’s recognized while she only (maybe) gets recognized privately. you know that horrible saying, behind every great man is a great woman? or how in recent years it’s been revealed that so many of the beloved male directors people praise owe the supposed genius of their work to their unrecognized women editors?
well with kahoko and hajime there’s actually something else/additional going on, in that it’s not just that she believes in him and so that gives him confidence; it’s also that he respects and trusts her opinion. he seeks out her opinion of his work. he seeks it out and trusts it when he doesn’t even trust his own opinion of it. so it’s not just that she’s an inspiration, she’s also leant a kind of authority in terms of taste, maybe even in terms of knowledge.
and this works doubly well for the narrative, because kahoko has been so infantilized (“overprotected”) in her upbringing that she couldn’t even make decisions about what to wear every day, let alone what kind of job she wants to pursue, or even if she wants to work out in the workplace or stay in the private sphere and be a wife and mother (aka doing unpaid labor). with hajime, she is allowed to have an opinion, to say which of his work is good and moving and which is terrible; her taste and judgement matter, and it’s not just because he likes her or something, but because he actually trusts in her ability to make distinctions between what’s good and not. he trusts her judgement and gives her power over the most important thing to him, his art, while her mom doesn’t trust her to choose her own clothes.
KAHOKO REMINDS ME OF CATHERINE MORLAND!!!!!
when she says something that’s simply true to what she feels and thinks but it’s actually really moving and observant of human nature and hajime gets *that look* on his face where it’s like she just fucked up his entire world because she touched him so deeply????????? this is The Look™:
me too, hajime, me too
I don’t want to not be able to see your daughter again. She’s so simple and honest it’s almost stupidity, she always goes beyond my expectations and I can’t take my eyes off her.
