Xinyi slid beside them without their notice. They were too distracted by the flower arrangements in front of them. He didn’t usually make a point to attend these town events, since they hardly made for good business. But there were currently some very enthusiastic potheads behind a bush that begged to differ. “Boo.”
Alicia was shocked, genuinely startled. She stared at Xinyi for a moment, wide-eyed, as her mind tried to process what was happening. Why was he here of all places? Giving him a wink and flirting a bit at the club was one thing, but it was an entirely different situation seeing him in broad daylight as her neighbors milled about the festival. So far, Alicia had been very successful at keeping her two worlds separate. Xinyi’s presence was a challenge to that.
“Oh! I didn’t — I didn’t see you there,” Alicia said. The confident tone she used at Bare Necessities was gone. “What, um, what brings you to the festival?”
