words press upon self, heavy on scarred chest, breaking cage that houses delicate organ within ( the part of him that he had finally given to the other ). it isn’t rational. there is no cause for him to react so viscerally. and yet, walls close in, and fragile heart beats fiercely against weakened chest until it begins to shatter. shards cut, leaving deep gouges, t e a r i n g him apart. fingers would unlock to pry from once desired hand, as he takes a step back. jaw to clench, a fierce ache to match that of the pain within his chest. selfish. he has become nothing but selfish since he and paul had taken a step forward together. he had taken down walls, his protection against an attack that he had never been truly prepared for. gaze pans away, no longer from embarrassment but shame. he had given in to weakness. had asked of one to do what he did not wish to comply with either ------------ to stay when danger was at their front door.
but shame does not linger, quick to boil beneath his skin, and anger there to take its place. they would have him hide, while they all stood firm against the saviors. did they think he was so willing to be locked up in a cage once more? he ran from the saviors. he would not let the others face hell on his behalf while protected himself against the threat. he didn’t need to be protected. gaze flashes toward paul’s, jaw tight, hands clenching to fists at his sides.
“ you expect me to stay here, an’ watch as you walk away without me? “
