Wish you all a Very Happy 74th Independence Day! The majority of this year has been about the pandemic that has impacted the entire world. On the 31st of December, I and my husband have a ritual of tuning on to DD News and watching the snapshots of the year that went by. And although a few months away, I almost saw myself watching 'is sale ki sabse badi khabar' being about Corona Virus! What a shame I thought, there has to be something better! Well there is, somehow we tend to ignore the little bits and pieces of blessings even in the times of pain. So here's what I have seen, I have seen emergency services personnel working tirelessly to help patients, I have seen innumerable individuals and small businesses help out individuals out of work, I have seen volunteers provide, food and essential supplies to daily wage earners who were out of work, as a country we have seen our armed forces stand guard and protect us even as we sheltered ourselves in the lockdown, we have seen repatriation flights bring back our citizens stuck outside India and help them get back to their families. These might not be all consuming and world changing things, but each of these acts are important and each of these acts is a testament to that fact that if we stand together and united, as human beings, the possibilities for growth and good outcomes are endless. When we talk about #atmanirbharbharat, it is about creating the possibilities that depend on everyone coming together and working towards becoming capable. There is so much to be done, so much that can be done, but if a nation with the 2nd largest population in the world could cooperate and stick together in the fight against a pandemic, we can also stick together in success. This is my small attempt at creating awareness so that when you decide to buy you might want to #supporthandloom and #buylocal Weave in focus: Kota Doria Kota is a town in the southern part of Rajasthan. A unique square checked pattern hand crafted with cotton, silk or a blend of both is unique to this weave. Doria literally means thread. Kota is blessed by a perinneal river as well as black soil in an otherwise arid state, which contributes to one of the best qualities of cotton produced in North India. The light weight and yet extremely elegant drape that is Kota Doria, deserves a special mention in the different weaves of India. This is my small attempt at creating awareness so that when you decide to buy you might want to #supporthandloom and #buylocal Weave in focus: Gadwal Gadwal sarees are indigenous to the Gadwal town of Andhra Pradesh. These sarees are unique in their use of cotton on the body and silk and zari on the borders and pallu. The motifs of these sarees are inspired by south Indian architecture and by nature. The pallu of the saree is separately attached in a weaving process that creates a unique pattern of merging colours near the pallu. Gadwal sarees are light weight and easier to carry than the pure silk counterparts and yet as beautiful as any other pure silk handloom saree! This weave needs a special mention at a time when some weaves are simply fading away in their glory. Confused with other mill made sarees, a lack of infrastructure and not enough air time as other popular sarees, this beautiful weave needs a breath of fresh air and a place in your wardrobes! Named after the town of Paithan, where the saree was originally made, Paithani saree is made using mulberry silk on both the warp and the weft. One of the most distinguishing features of a Paithani saree is the use of peacock motifs on pallu. Paithani sarees are now manufactured in Yeola near Nashik. Use of dual tones created by different colours on the warp and the weft, rich motifs influenced by the Ajanta caves, and awe inspiring designs, Paithani sarees are the quintessential pride of Maharashtra. I am often told by weavers that the demand for pure silk handloom sarees is falling rapidly due to the influx of machine made art silk sarees. Many weavers with generations of solid weaving experience have completely given up on the profession because they are unable earn a sustainable income. Are we somewhere lagging behind in the upkeep of this traditional weave or are we simply ignoring an issue that looms over a vanishing form of art? Let's make an effort to preserve the Paithani! In India, Telangana, Odisha and Gujarat are the main centres that apply the technique. Pochampally, Sambhalpuri and Patola are well known for their beautiful designs and eclectic patterns. The beauty of Ikkat is that it cannot be created on a power loom. It needs highly skilled hands and a great technique to weave these beautiful threads into the actual fabric. Single and double ikkat are two types of Ikkat weaving techniques, the later being much more intricate. I am often asked why ikkat is so expensive. It is precisely because of the extensive and skillful technique that goes into creating Ikkat. The more intricate the design, the more technique and commensurate price. Yes, there are screen printed versions that try to sell as Ikkat. These copies are anything but Ikkat. A sleepy town in Madhya Pradesh that rises and sleeps to the takh-thaki of handlooms, Chanderi is one of the most iconic weaves of India. A beautiful sheer fabric made with cotton and silk along with fine woven zari made from gold, silver or copper. In the beginning, the weave started off only with handspun cotton. Traditional buttis depicting flowers, swans, heavenly bodies, are mostly inspired by nature. These sarees are light weight and extremely elegant. In the more recent times Chanderi sarees are woven with the likes of katan silk and organza and yet, the timeless elegance of the cotton silks can never fade! The knock offs of Chanderi fabric and sarees are made using polyester. Like any other copy, these are sold at dirt cheap prices. These knock off not only take away from our heritage but also contribute enormously to environmental pollution. It is therefore important to make an informed purchase when you do! Kanjivaram and Arni silk sarees are the quintessential pride of south India. Made with pure mulberry silk and zari sourced from Gujarat, these sarees are a brides best friends. Arni, a lesser known town, an hour away from Kanchipuram, is known for a lighter but much loved version of Kanjivaram sarees. Beautiful handwoven motifs, bright beautiful colours and the timeless elegance of mulberry silk, whats not to love about this wonderous drape!? The town of Arni is especially hard hit by the ongoing pandemic. Weavers sitting with 2 months worth of ready stock aren't able to find buyers. Kanjivaram sarees have also been hit hard by machine made polyester versions that are literally sold at throwaway prices. As buyers this is a time to recognize the importance of preserving these weaves and buying #local and #handwoven only from authentic sources.
