i wish the default anti-AI argument wasn’t the environmental one, which is often overstated. i promise there are better arguments against it
but don’t take it from me
An expert on environmental policy measured every drop of water he used during months of heavy AI work. The findings reveal we may be worryin

like i very much get the impulse. one query to chatGPT = X amount of water feels tangible even if the math isn’t quite right. and there are environmental impacts of AI — but to make that your main case, you need to compare it to the environmental impacts of, say, lawns and golf courses and the electronics we already use everyday. see how that back-of-the-napkin math comes out.
a lot of people won’t be moved by environmental arguments anyways, but they might consider labor impacts/data privacy/more powerful scams and cyberattacks/i can keep going do you want me to keep going
like, i get this, for the most part, but i sincerely do not know one single person in real life who will be moved because of personal privacy concerns over environmental harm. no one really cares about their personal data because "we're not doing anything wrong or illegal anyway" T_T
