WHEN DOES THE BEETLEJUICE MUSICAL TAKE PLACE?

So for the first time last night I noticed that right before Ready set not yet Adam pulls out flip phone!??? I always just assumed it took place now or 80s because even after seeing this I’m not sure what the benefit of this show taking place in the late 90s or early 2000s would be. There are no cues in anyone else’s clothes or props that indicate the time period accept the people in the Neitherworld. But that didn’t help because the two people, the cheating groom and dude who smoked in bed both looked like they could be from the 70s or 80s(uhhhh maybe the smoker could be 90s but idk). Anyway this post will reach no conclusion because I have no idea when or why Beetlejuice takes place and I want everyone else to do mental work for me.
