So I knew my school was really big on deaf studies, but I didnāt know that itās 2nd in the nation behind Gallaudet. I learned that today while doing mock and I almost cried with pride.

Bad things are always going to happen in life. People will hurt you, but you canāt use that as an excuse to hurt someone back.

Representation Matters to White People Too
Look, when I sayĀ ārepresentation matters,ā I believe that the most important thing is for people who are often ignored in arts and media to see themselves there.Ā
But I also mean that itās important for white/hetero people to see people who arenāt white/hetero.Ā
Hereās the thing. I was raised in a very white/hetero community. Every friend I had was white. I never had a black person in my classroom until late high school. I never had a black teacher until college. There was one out-gay student at my high school. One. And I saw what shit he had to go through by being out.Ā
And, if Iām honest with myself, most of the adults in my life were racist and homophobic. They were good, loving peopleā¦to me. But they were also racist and homophobic.Ā
And as a kid through my teen years, Iād be lying if I didnāt say that didnāt affect me. I parrotted the adults in my life, which meant that I often parrotted their hate and their prejudice. Iām ashamed of those attitudes nowānow that Iāve had education and met people who were different from me and travelled the world and put aside hate.Ā
But then? It was easy to excuse racism. People who werenāt white and straight didnāt exist in my worldāand they didnāt exist in the world I saw on television and in books and on the radio. It was easier to live in the bubble of that world.Ā
Representation matters to white people, too. It is important for white people to see diversity. Not as a token, not asĀ āpolitically correctāāthe white people who feel that adding a minority character to a storyline is pandering are horrible people who are entirely missing the point. Iām talking about the white kids who donāt see minorities in their lives, but who see a black girl and a white boy being friends on Sesame Street. Iām talking about the straight teen reading More Happy than Not, Iām talking about the white teen empathizing with Malala Yousafzai. The more representation we have, the more we hold a mirror through the world rather than whiting-out people who arenāt like the majority, the better our world is.
Representation matters.
I swear to god, itās like every damn word could have come out of my own brain. Brava!
Honestly. As someone who went to a very tiny, almost completely white private school through eighth grade and then to a high school in a city with the demographics of a marvel movie (89.3% White, 0.7%African American, 0.4% Native American, 5.6% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.8% other races, 3.0% two or more races. 3.7%Ā Hispanic or Latino) I never realised that the casting choices in most tv shows and movies vastly underrepresent any race that isnāt white.
I remember being confused about people saying they should hire more actors of color for movies set in like new york because thats what i legit thought the rest of the US and western europe was like.

By lifting the simultaneous burdens of crippling guilt and premature responsibility.
did I ever mention that I know someone whose family owned a zombie dog because thatās some real shit that I get to delight with at parties
Tell us that story?
okay here is the story of the zombie dog
this dogās name was John. they found him half drowned in a bag of puppies that were not so fortunate as he was, and was taken in immediately. he was a runt and not quite right (most likely from the whole half drowned thing), but a very loving dog. the problem with John was that he smelled like death, and no one knew why. vets couldnāt figure it out. it was obviously some kind of skin problem, but they had no idea what kind. all anyone knew was that if you touched him, you would smell like death too, so you couldnāt pet him, and that for some reason, the only thingĀ that made the smell go away was being around other dogs. so they got another dog and the death smell stopped and John lived a very happy life
when he was getting old, maybe about 15 years, part of his skull caved in. just like that! suddenly had a huge dent in his head! and he was totally fine. didnāt notice it, didnāt affect him at all. just this massive dent right there in his head where his skull had collapsed in on his brain, and he was still the happiest and most loving dog. the skull cave in, for whatever reason, caused the ear on that side of his head to just fall off entirely, but again, perfectly happy dog who did not know he was down an ear and a fully formed skull. they took him to the vet, thinking maybe they should put him down. I mean, wouldnāt you think so? but the vet said that the dog was eating, and pooping, and happy, so there was no reason to put him down, so they didnāt
but thatās not even the weird part. the weird part is the area of the brain that got caved in on was apparently the area that registers pain, so this one-eared, collapsed skull dog could no longer feel anyĀ pain. he got old, his joints got stiff, his teeth rotted out of his head, his tongue hung out of his mouth and got black and hard, and he felt none of it! in fact, he was happier than heād ever been feeling no pain, and the fact that he didnāt feel how much he was falling apart somehow made him live until he was 23. thatās right, the collapsed skull, one eared, zero teeth, smells like literal death when alone dog lived to be 23Ā years old. they used to joke that heād been dead for years, but was too stupid to realize it yet
and thatās the story about the literal zombie dog my friendās family owned
I'n simultaneously delighted, alarmed, a little horrified and impressed all at once.
how many muggle born kids showed up at hogwarts like, āi get youāre into magic and donāt get me wrong, magic is awesome, but please donāt try and tell me quills and inkwells make more sense than pencils. i realize you have an aesthetic going, but admit itās that. admit itās just for looks.ā
Imagine how many muggles parents looked at the supply list and went āParchment? Quills? INKWELLS? Fuck this weāre going to staples.ā
And then imagine if the muggle parents start getting into arguments with the teachers when they start getting messages telling them their kids arenāt using the proper materials.
āOkay look we can accept working with frog livers, turning mice into fine china, and whatever the fuckĀ āarithmancyā is but weāre not going to let you shame our kids just because they choose to use a bic pen instead of this āye old inkwellā bullshit. Also. itās called a spiral notebook and Iām not gonna make my Abby drag around five hundred feet of loose parchment just because you people have a theme going.ā
Aesthetic or death
