By the time Brianna and Aquaria get together, she obviously already has a close relationship with Remy just by virtue of having been her teacher. But it does take her a bit of time to actually get out of teacher mode when sheâs around the kids, so sheâll almost always completely censor herself when Remy is around.
Aquaria will sometimes see Remy enter the room, and immediately move an appropriate distance away from Brianna so that the students shouldnât get any ideas, and she doesnât even notice sheâs doing it until Remy is like, âYou know it doesnât bother me that youâre dating my mom, right?â and Aquaria remembers that sheâs not in the classroom, but on Briannaâs living room couch.
For a couple of months, Aquaria still feels weird hanging out at Briannaâs house when the kids are home because holy shit that used to be my student and now sheâs seeing me kiss someone thatâs so weird. So they start hanging out in Briannaâs room or go on dates outside the house more often until Aquaria is comfortable enough to be affectionate around the girls.
Aquaria is quite possibly Remyâs favorite teacher ever, and thatâs not just because sheâs dating her mom. She was her favorite before that, too. Remy has always felt like Aquaria just got her, she understood the way she felt on her first day as a little fifth grader surrounded by older kids; she understood how Remy felt when people teased her at school for her smarts and her hair and her interests, and it all felt a lot more okay because Aquaria was around to show her she wasnât alone.
One day, a couple weeks after the incident with one of her bullies, Aquaria invites Remy to her house. Not Brianna, not Maya, just Remy. So Remy shows up very confused, avoids Aquariaâs little dogs as she steps inside and sees her fully decked out in exercise clothing. Aquaria has on yoga pants and a tank top but she doesnât have any shoes on and thereâs a few wooden planks just laying on her couch and Remy is still confused.
âHas your mom signed you up for martial arts?â Aquaria asks in lieu of a greeting. Remy shakes her head. âI havenât asked her about it. Couldnât figure out how to bring it up, really.â And Aquaria smiles because thatâs what she figured and regardless of whether Aquaria herself had dropped hints, she knew Brianna was so busy sheâd have totally forgotten about it. âStill wanna learn?â
Aquaria has her over about once a week and teaches her everything she remembers from back in the day. Remy learns to arrive wearing proper clothing, and ditches her shoes before she even walks through the door. By the end of the next month, Remy can kind of actually defend herself, which is cool, and kick through a board, which is even cooler.
One day, Brianna catches Remy practicing stances in her bedroom and is totally shocked. âWhy didnât you tell me you were doing this? I have a black belt, I could have totally helped!â and that gets back to Aquaria and they both find out at the same time that theyâre kind of a martial arts power couple? So now, Brianna will sit in on some of their lessons, and sheâll correct Remyâs posture, or better explain a move Aquaria had mostly forgotten, and itâs great.
Aquariaâs relationship with Maya developed a bit differently. At first, the only thing she could think to bond with her over is Girl Scout cookies, cause Aquaria was never a dancer and she doesnât really know what else Maya likes. But one weekend when she knocks on Briannaâs door, Maya answers and shuffles her inside, drags her to her motherâs bedroom and hands her a very sparkly pink dress.
Aquaria just kind of holds it, sheâs not really sure what to do with it, and sheâs not really sure that Maya is allowed to go through her momâs clothing like that. She looks to the child for some type of direction and all Maya says is, âThis is a princess dress. And you look like a princess so now you have to wear it,â and how can Aquaria say no to that?â
So Aquaria puts on the dress and as she would expect, itâs a little tight in some places and a little baggy in others and it only comes up to her shin but dammit if she doesnât feel like a princess. She lets Maya spin her around and fix (read: ruin) her makeup and when Brianna comes into the room, sheâs not even mad because apparently this happens a lot with Maya and her friends. Aquaria is honored to be one of Mayaâs friends.
The first time Aquaria comes over after she cut her hair, Maya once again drags her into Briannaâs room and this time, along with a light purple dress, she lugs out a large suit that Aquaria can only assume was once Jacobâs. Maya lays out both outfits on Briannaâs bed and says, âNow you look like a prince, but I think you can still be a princess if you wanna.â
Aquaria takes both outfits into the closet and comes out wearing the dress and a suit jacket over it and she looks ridiculous and stellar at the same time. âYouâre both!â Maya is naturally very excited at this new possibility that she hadnât even thought of, and she makes Aquaria act out a whole scene as both the damsel in distress and the handsome prince who saves her. Aquaria figures that just this once, a nuanced critique of stereotypical gender roles can wait.
Later that night, when theyâre alone, Brianna definitely makes a point to let her know that sheâs hotter in that suit jacket than Jacob could ever hope to be.
