no I feel insane
Yuna and David had a valid concern when asking about Ilya's past promiscuity, because they need to know that their son's partner is taking it seriously
The "I have only been in love with one person" line from Ilya is beautiful and poignant and said without doubt or hesitation, to relieve all of the Hollanders concerns.
But what I think is important is that Shane's response of "Same here. Only one." Though this may seem unnecessary to his parents ("we know you pretty well, Shane"), it's NOT unnecessary to Ilya.
Ilya crashed the fuck out over Rose Landry. Ilya expected Shane to bring Rose to All Star Weekend, in the books Ilya even expects Shane's "can I tell you something?" To be an engagement announcement. Rose could be open and affectionate with Shane in front of the whole world. The whole world thought that Rose and Shane were in love.
Ilya isn't used to being loved. Ilya doesn't believe he can be loved.
Ilya needed to know that not only does Shane love him, but at no point, regardless of how much Shane denied himself or how hard he tried with others, at NO POINT did he ever give his heart to anyone else.
Svetlana recognizing that Ilya’s heart doesn’t belong to her and reassuring him that it’s okay for him to be in love with a man and giving him the courage to take what he truly needs and wants in that moment - to be with the person he’s in love with - and go and call Shane is so deeply important. Svetlana reassuring him she will always be there to support him, that he deserves not only her love, but the love of the person who his heart belongs to. In a different world, they probably could’ve ended up together, but they don’t move each other in that way and the connection that they do have as friends is still deeply important to both of them. Svetlana does not see him as less of a man for his queerness, which is so, so resonant and life changing for Ilya as a queer Russian who has lived his whole life in a country that actively punishes people like him. In fact, she encourages his queerness. Without her kindness and grace, who knows if he would’ve had the strength to call Shane and take the leap of finally admitting his feelings out loud, because even if Shane didn’t understand the words, Ilya could never go back after having admitted it to himself, and Svetlana gave him the courage and empathy he needed to let himself feel those things.
Svetlana knows how Ilya operates. She knows he never directly says what he actually feels or what he means, and he will never tell her directly what’s going on in his life, but she tries in her own way to reach him and encourage him to break free of the constraints he’s placed on himself.
The women in this show being such a safe space for queer men to exist and feel what they feel is so deeply healing and important. They are not characters to be discarded by the narrative once the boys finally choose each other, but are active players in helping them get to that point.
Just masterful work all around. This is how you write supporting characters. Their ultimate goal is to serve the main character’s narrative, but they never feel disposable or lacking in their own autonomy.
broke: Connor and Hudson are the exact opposite of their characters
woke: Connor and Hudson are who their characters are inside; Ilya is secretly a big tender softie and Shane is secretly a giant freak

Shane and Ilya slowly inching closer and closer throughout S1. (insp)
Ilya: this guy is cute, I should start a stationary bike race so he knows I want to get sweaty together
Ilya: that didn’t quite work. Maybe I should just give him the eye? While I tell him I hope he likes his new city?
Ilya: okay. But surely if I make him drink from my water bottle and brush his fingers when passing it over…?
Ilya: call him pretty. To his face. No way he can miss that
Ilya: desperate measures, I’ll have to tell him I orchestrated this whole ad campaign just so I could see him again
Ilya: WHAT IF I STARTED JERKING OFF IN THESE COMUNAL SHOWERS?
Shane, 7 years later: I have figured out that you like me.
