When I got in the train, it was full to the point where people were already standing in the aisles, both at the top floor and the bottom floor
I looked around and saw that a woman had put all her stuff on the seat in front of her. I think she was grading homework or something, and everyone was too polite to tell her to move it

This isn't the first time Topeka has switched its name to mark a cultural trend. In 1998, former mayor Joan Wagnon temporarily changed the name of the city to "ToPikachu, Kansas," in reference to the Pikachu anime character, from the show and game called "Pokemon," which was popular at the time, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
Bunten, the current mayor, was quick to attribute that bizarre "ToPikachu" happening to another local administration.
"I read in the paper this morning that they did a similar thing a number of years ago. Hold on, maybe I can get this sorted out. Just a minute," he said, turning to an assistant for details.
"We did it for a day," he said, sounding perplexed. "I can't remember why."
My friend posted this on Facebook, and WOW I'm really glad she did.
This is the funniest thing I’ve seen all week.
New things on the horizon
Haven't mentioned what I'm doing after City Year. I'm writing for Poets and Quants (prospective M.B.A.'s, check it out!) and Fandrop (whose website will shortly become more functional, but meanwhile... here's an article about why Robert Smith should be the next Doctor Who). A change of pace for sure, but a welcome one -- and while I miss the kiddos, working in downtown San Francisco is an absolute dream. You know what isn't, though? Searching for housing in or around the city.
I wish my frustration looked that glamorous, but it really doesn't. Since Tumblr can't be any sketchier than Craigslist (right??), is anyone looking for housing in San Francisco? Does anyone have a room? I'm right here.

Today I had a revelation
Nearly all my existential angst takes place when I’m hungry. Like, “Oh man, this task is kind of hard… maybe I wasn’t meant to do this… man, the modern world is crazy. Maybe I need to spend more time hanging out in forests. But is that even possible? What has humanity done to itself? What does it mean to be happy?”
And then I realize that I just really need to be eating a burrito.

Finished with City Year since May 31st. Home for a bit in preparation for the move to San Francisco (or Berkeley. Oakland? I don’t know). Cuddling with this funny-looking cat. Can’t even process the fact that I’ve left LA forever because I’m still so tired.
I hate it when people complain about the new Gatsby movie because it "ruins the book."
The book still exists. It’s not like the director found every copy on the planet and took a crayon to all the pages.
Haven't written anything here in a long time. Haven't even been eating my vegetables, y'all. I don't think I've been this busy since my last semester of college, except this time around, I can't afford to operate on no sleep because I work with children and lord only knows what would come out of my mouth.
One more week and City Year's over. Two more weeks and I'm back in NorCal.
How to solve world hunger with pizza
The idea of a universal food synthesizer sounds like something straight out of the Jetsons or Star Trek, but thanks to a $125,000 grant from NASA, a 3-D food printer may become a reality.
Anjan Contractor, a senior mechanical engineer at Systems and Materials Research Corporation, is already working on bringing the idea to fruition.
NASA’s interested because storing the various ingredients as a power greatly extends their shelf life for lengthy travel through space, but Contractor wants to keep all of the recipes open source, so the general public could eventually benefit as well.
So how will the pizza be made?
Pizza will be one of the first items printed because of its natural layers of ingredients. First, a layer of dough will be printed and baked at the same time using a heated plate at the bottom of the printer. A layer of tomato base will follow — made of powder, water and oil — then a protein layer will top the pizza.

Israel’s Negev Desert is alive – with locusts.
NBC News: Huge swarms of the newly hatched critters have begun marching across the sand, devouring everything in their path.
With the help of high-tech irrigation methods, much of Israel’s desert has been transformed into lush farmland that supplies supermarkets across the country with fresh produce. But the swarm of locusts, which locals say is the worst infestation in decades, is threatening crops and farms.
